Don't know about you, but I feel the Fediverse has been flooded by actual news rn though. I'm probably already following too many publications, but I feel like my feed is flooded by them lately.

I blocked most news communities. Stuff slips through, but I don’t really have the mental capacity to care about it.
sj_zero 1 year ago
It's the only thing you're allowed to talk about on some instances. Really need to choose carefully.
Otoh the fediverse is what you make of it. I checked the top posts on my feed and I didn't see a single post about Linux.
Rhoeri@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Not to me. In fact, I have all those communities blocked. No issues here.
Thisfox@sopuli.xyz 1 year ago
I don’t see much linux stuff, not subscribed to it, but it is better here than seeing all that sodding windows propaganda everywhere. My opinion is that the feddiverse is mostly star trek, but again, probably what I happen to have subscribed to. Why did you subscribe to all the pinux based interest groups if you aren’t interested in Linux?
cyanarchy@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
A lot of reddit transplants do not really spend time with curated feeds of subscriptions.
BURN@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I don’t like only browsing subscribed communities because otherwise I never see anything outside of a bubble. Also subscribing to big communities means I miss anything important in the small ones.
One of the biggest failings of the fediverse in my opinion is the complete lack of any kind of decent algorithm. People rallied so hard against them that we now have the opposite problem, discoverability is next to 0 on this platform. I love an algorithm that actually works and recommends what I want to see.
Now I get that it’s unpopular with the current user base, but I’m going to guess it’ll be a problem sooner or later when new users decide to go elsewhere because of algorithms.
Thisfox@sopuli.xyz 1 year ago
You don’t need to get someone elses curation, just do a search for your interests. It isn’t difficult. How odd that people don’t know how to look for stuff. I guess algorithms atrophied their ability to think for themselves…

Be fair. He’s not the only one.

Have you heard about our Lord and Savior Linux?

It feels a bit less lonely if you’re a trekkie who likes cats.
Grass@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Block them or join us and your problems are solved. I don’t like football so I blocked each of the communities for literally every team as I don’t know how to block a whole instance that hosted them all. Now I don’t see football unless someone makes a community for another team.

Make sure you're following hashtags on Mastodon. I see plenty of people posting stuff like art, food and gaming opinions because I'm following a bunch of topics that interest me.
OscarRobin@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I agree, but more broadly about technology and working on it. That’s why I enjoy Lemmy and Mastodon but unfortunately my girlfriend literally cannot find anyone talking about anything she cares about on here.
DrSleepless@lemmy.world 1 year ago
So find a place that talks about stuff you like?

Also the Fedi is anti-NFT and anti-crypto.

You’re implying that it’s somehow a bad thing to be against high tech ponzi schemes?

Well beans, at any rate. Babies not so much. Undecided on “ie”.

From my perspective, the Fediverse is full of people who think Biden is the greatest president ever, that we should stay locked down in our houses for the rest of our lives, that everything should be free or provided by the government, and that if you disagree with anyone on anything, you’re automatically a Trump supporter and a Nazi. (I don’t like Trump or his cult, btw.)
I do have a PC with Linux, but I can see where you’re coming from. Unfortunately, Linux isn’t for everybody.
Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Oh my god, you’re still using Linux?!? I switched to Windows ten years ago and haven’t looked back!!!
- Average Linux user’s answer to someone asking a genuine question about a problem they’re having with Windows
Yeah, agree with OP, it’s a massive problem on lemmy too

They fixed the filters on the explore page: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21083
You can filter out posts by keyword now.
meldrik@lemmy.wtf 1 year ago
It depends on two things. What are you yourself subscribed to and what is your instance subscribed.
You only see the communities on your instance’s “all”, that other users and you is subscribed to. So if a majority of the users on Lemmy.zip is subscribed to various Linux communities, then that’s what you see.
I don’t see a majority of Linux communities on my “all”.

What kind of content are you looking for? Probably we can guide you.
Jezebelley@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
[deleted]marcos@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Oh, that explains the kinds of things you see. Most content on lemmy has no relation to Linux at all. But on those two topics, yes, it’s almost universal.
Maybe you should start a Windows gamming community?
Ashtear@lemm.ee 1 year ago
!gaming@beehaw.org !patientgamers@sh.itjust.works
The genre/publisher/series/individual game-oriented niche communities are generally still small but are growing. !baldurs_gate_3@lemmy.world has been active though.
What I’m seeing right now in the smaller communities is sufficient voter and comment engagement but not enough people making new posts to drive discussion.
CharlesReed@kbin.social 1 year ago
https://kbin.social/m/gaming and https://lemmy.world/c/games are here. They're both relatively active.

Are you searching hashtags
sneezymrmilo@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Idk i personally don’t care about Linux and I find there are plenty of active communities that are unrelated to Linux. My method of finding active decent communities is just sorting by most active communities and subscribing to the ones that interest me.
Nerrad@lemmy.world 1 year ago
What kind of diverse subjects are you searching for? Maybe you can help bring that diversity. If you build it they will come.
