I wish the average people realized this instead of bickering about which of their country is superior.

I wish people would stop disparaging others just because they happen to live in a particular country.

Guess what, a single person can’t control everything their country does. Get over it.

Watching over-personification continues to become the death of our species. We deserve an AI apocalypse in many ways at this point. maybe everyone will snap out of it before some theoretical grand tipping point towards certain “dystopian” outcomes ends up coming to pass, though probably not, especially at this rate which I have been seeing continue throughout this year

yeah needs to match on both sides either “the americans and the chinese” or “americans and chinese” not this weird othering mix.

      • idiomaddict@lemmy.world ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

To be fair, they’re not entirely equivalent. I wouldn’t bristle at all at being called “an American,” but I would never call someone “a Chinese.” In the plural form with a definite article, it doesn’t feel as bad, but I’d probably prefer to say “Chinese people,” whereas “American people” feels a little clunky, though it’s probably the best option if you want to keep both terms the same.

I don’t think this is necessarily a racist thing though, because I’d probably tend to say “the English/ french/ spanish” and “Guatemalans/ Nigerians/ Tibetans.” Demonyms are definitely a weird area of language that feels biased when you see a direct comparison though.

OK, so I’m one of the original SJWs

I’m old and have a bit of a reputation for getting in the face of the ignorant, which isn’t always wise, but I’m a principled cunt

But there is a point where the little things don’t fucking matter when the person clearly doesn’t have any malicious intent, and only someone trying to be offended would have a problem

To whit, I was asking an indigenous friend whether they prefer “indigenous” or “aboriginal” when I’m speaking to them.

They said “the fact that you’re even asking means that you’re obviously not a part of the problem, so pull the stick out of your arse”

I suggest you do the same.

      source
      • Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Perhaps your indigenous friends opinion isn’t as valuable as you think?

[Statistical Communiqué for 2024 on national economics by the National Bureau of Statistics of China] (www.stats.gov.cn/…/t20250228_1958822.html):

“In 2024, the per capita disposable income nationwide was 41,314 yuan, an increase of 5.3 percent over that of the previous year or a real increase of 5.1 percent after deducting price factors”

Tell me how growing your disposable income by 5% a year is “not being able to afford anything”

    • marcos@lemmy.world ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

      41,314 yuan

So, in average they had 5k dollars to spend on everything that isn’t food and rent… And you are proposing they are rich?

It‘s not going well for the average Chinese worker in recent years from what I‘ve heard. The pandemic and crumbling real estate market followed by countries diversifying their economies away from China (albeit slowly) and Trumps arbitrary trade war aren‘t good prospects for China. Xi Jinping‘s rhetoric in speeches went from „prosperity for all“ before the pandemic to „prosperity in moderation“ to essentially saying people shouldn‘t expect anything at all in his „eat bitter“ speech last year and that was before tariffs. Order books are empty and unemployment is rising just like it is in many places of the world right now to be honest. These are economically turbulent times and export economies are struggling when nobody can afford shit.

There was a YouTuber I like who went to view some of the new state of the art factories and they were operating at 1/6 capacity due to very low demand. The world economic terrorism trump is doing is making it tough out there for every country.

This is my gripe with tankies. One of the most salient points of 1984:

“It was now impossible for any human being to prove by documentary evidence that the war with Eurasia had ever happened.”

“Oceania was at war with Eurasia: therefore Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia.”

All war is fake except the class war.

It’s been so fun seeing USians freak out at the remote prospect that they might have to live like people in other countries do. USians on Reddit spent the entire 2023 complaining about prices of Doordash delivery, and then they’re also irked that games cost 60$ now. But cooking at home for a couple days instead of ordering pizza again? Not an option. “Ooh we have to work all day, we don’t have time for cooking.” Well guess how people eat in other countries? They cook at home after work. Boo fucking hoo.

      • SlurpingPus@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Yeah, so ignorant, we even know how to cook. Unlike the enlightened USians who just have someone else cook for them every day and have yet another guy bring it.

In terms of average purchasing power for the bottom half of their populations

    • income in USA > 3-fold that in China
    • personal wealth in China > 2-fold that in USA.

Interesting graphs. China does have a lot of very poor provinces, even if high number out of official poverty levels. PPP income per capita is much higher in China than US and growing significantly.

      source
      • lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

PPP national income per capita in USA > 3-fold that in China

where China beats USA is personal wealth of the less wealthy as mentioned before

        economic inequality

        • income: fairly similar & high for both
        • wealth: high for both, though USA higher

China has many more socialized services and their income level is far less indicative of overall quality of life

It has honestly been a long time since I heard someone in the west suggest the chinese economy is struggling at all - i thought maybe something meaningful had happened in the last week or something that changed that picture

      source
    • humanspiral@lemmy.ca ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

An interesting question is which of these 2 numbers is most important. The PPP income measurements could be flawed if the poorest half of Chinese have been able to accumulate double the wealth as poorest half of Americans.

Even if “attitudes towards savings” are different/a factor, being able to survive while hoping for the upward mobility that savings/wealth provides is more likely than not, a sign that poorer half of Chinese are better off than poorer half of Americans, despite the standard measures of PPP income.
