- Comment on A Geothermal Company Wants to Use New Technology to Heat an Old German Town 1 day ago:
I just hope they don’t make the same mistake as with the beautiful German town that is literally being ripped apart by the effects of the drilling.
- Comment on Anyone a fan of Wizardry, or other first-person dungeon crawlers? 1 day ago:
The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall was a complete mindfuck back then.
Being able to walk, ride or fly through a continent the size of Europe, in 3D first person view, with different climate zones and seasons, buy a ship, turn into a vampire or werewolf, enter any house on the map and have NPCs react to what clothes you wear…
There was nothing like it before, and its freedom and scope is unmatched till today. - Comment on If the US was partitioned, what new states would you want to appear? 1 day ago:
How about dividing the US into 50 states with equal population?

It was so bad under Ford that families that used to be able to do well with one job needed Mom to get a job too.
Oh boy, am I glad those days are in the past…

- Comment on It would be so funny if China colonizes Mars, then the Martian Colonists declare independence, and Mars become a new bastion of Freedom and Prosperity. 5 days ago:
80% of earth’s surface is still completely uninhabited by humans.
I’m talking about the sea floor and most of Antarctica.
It would be much easier to build colonies there than on Mars.
Even if our worst predictions about climate change come true, hell even if warming was twice as bad, they would still be much more hospitable for human life than Mars.We haven’t colonized those places, because it simply isn’t worth the effort.
So why would it be worth the much, much bigger effort to settle on Mars? - Comment on steam vs gog, which game store to buy from? 5 days ago:
You can’t buy games from Steam.
You can only license them for private use, subject to a change in licensing terms or disappearance of the game from the platform at any time. - Comment on How come there is not a pope without grey hair? I mean a much younger pope like 30s 40s. Really can't be that hard. You got an ocean of cardinals and priests who pretty much tell say? 5 days ago:
Electing a young pope is too risky.
He doesn’t have a long track record and may still change his views, so he’s less predictable.
And he could guide the church in a “wrong” direction for half a century. In the middle ages, popes were often elected at a younger age, but they were also less reluctant to “dispose of” a bad one, or excommunicate him for devil worship and elect a competing one.
- Comment on Honestly wtf? 5 days ago:
The seeds are carried by birds and can survive in a dormant state for years.
Lots of stuff like trees washed away by rivers end up floating in the ocean.
But it’s also perfectly feasible that a limited trade happened far in the past.
Polynesians show that you can reliably cross even the pacific on boats made using stone tools and fire. - Comment on Whats going on in YSK? 6 days ago:
I wonder if it’d be worth requiring a minimum age of a week or two before users can create a post?
Fuck no, that way lies reddit.
- Comment on Do people who have bad relationship with their parents care about "insults" like "I fucked your mom last night"? Or do you just not care? 1 week ago:
Does anyone who aged out of middle school care about that insult?
- Comment on 'Extraordinary discovery' at Orkney's Ness of Brodgar Neolithic site 1 week ago:
Would be even funnier if it’s an Ork Shoota.
- Comment on Breaking functions down to their constituent parts is nice and all, but this is a step too far. 1 week ago:
They should have cancelled this series instead of Rome and Firefly.
- Comment on 'Extraordinary discovery' at Orkney's Ness of Brodgar Neolithic site 1 week ago:
They’re probably running out of funding for the dig and need to secure more for next year, thus the cliffhanger.

- Comment on YSK that Boris Johnson was one of the most corrupt Prime Minister in British history. He was obsessed about money 1 week ago:
I’m well enough informed, I work for one of the oldest independent newspapers in my country.
I don’t need USpoliticsbillionaire soap operas shoved in my face when I’m scrolling through memes to relax.
Lemmy isn’t even a good news source. The (political) posts that make it to the top aren’t nuanced or informative, they’re mostly ragebait and propaganda.
Propaganda for a good cause, granted. - Comment on The Turing test has been inverted. 1 week ago:

It’s so frustrating when you try to block US politics from your feed to keep the anxiety down, and people hit you with YSK/TIL TRUMP DID THIS HORRIBLE THING

- Comment on Common Desktop Environment "CDE" 2.5.3 Released After Two Years 1 week ago:
Some commercial Unix systems still exist, but are being phased out.
BSD is also a Unix system.
However, this desktop environment also runs in Linux. Why people still use it, I don’t know. But there doesn’t have to be a good reason, as long as someone thinks it’s worthwhile to maintain it, it’ll keep existing. - Comment on Common Desktop Environment "CDE" 2.5.3 Released After Two Years 1 week ago:
It’s an old desktop environment that used to be the standard for Unix workstations.
KDE and Gnome were heavily influenced by it.
And it’s still maintained and just released a new version. - Comment on Assuming humanity last another few hundred years; How many human languages do you think are gonna be left in 100 years? In 200 years? 1 week ago:

- Comment on What game is a guilty pleasure of yours? 1 week ago:
I only played up to MW3, back then the meta was maxing out on armor and medium range lasers. Go in close , aim for the opponent’s leg, shoot. Your mech powers down from the heat for a couple seconds, but the other mech is out of the action. Proceed to one-shot almost every opponent.
