Give me what I want or I’ll tax my population SO HARD! I don’t get it.

The U.S. is the world’s largest consumer market by a factor of 3. So it’s more accurate to say “Give me what I want or I’ll take away a sizable chunk of your customers”.
You and I both know that the U.S. won’t just magically and instantly stand up its own production to replace your countries market, but in this case he just needs American companies to start importing from a different foreign country with lower tariffs. The effect this has on your country depends on how much your country’s GDP comes from exports to America, but it’s potentially very harmful.
As an American this sucks because long term, long after this dude is gone, our trading partners will have already adjusted who they’re exporting to in order to absorb a loss like this, and I doubt that’d change for decades.
echodot@feddit.uk 2 weeks ago
European markets don’t tend to send the US products it tends to be services. There isn’t anyone else at least there isn’t anyone else who doesn’t already also have tariffs on them.
He went to town with married a little while ago and decided to put tariffs on everyone including nations who’ve never traded with you United States because they have a population of six people and 3,000 koalas.
Sabin10@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Well you see he’s a profoundly stupid man that sincerely believes tariffs are paid by the producer, not the importer and he’s so sure of himself that it’s literally impossible that he is wrong about anything, ever.
balder1991@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
He was wearing a cap with “Trump was right about everything” in a recent event, right? Who does that?
devfuuu@lemmy.world [bot] 3 weeks ago
Brainwashing and propaganda to sell internally. He’s preping all americans to hate everything that is outside of them and to blame on those pesky other bad countries. He’s basically ensuring he has enough bodies to use for war.
III@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I see these countries building their trade with counties other than the US as the only good part of Trump’s tarrif tantrums. Less reliance on the US is better for everyone, even the US. Because it will force us (I am American) to have to participate globally without the strong arming bullshit we have always relied upon. It will force us to actually work with others.

He bankrupted a casino. That’s all you need to get.

“discriminate” is a bad faith use of vocabulary.
What Trump means is that those nation-states except sovereignty.
Typhoon@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
Yes and it mirrors his beliefs on young girls expressing sovereignty over their bodies too.
KnitWit@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Like three days after ‘normalizing trade with the EU’, it’s right back to antagonizing and tariff threats. Who could have seen this sudden reversal coming?

when will they learn you cant negotiate with terrorists?

The same US Tech that Donated MILLIONS of Dollars and Gold Statues to Trump? What a WEIRD but NOT CORRUPT Coincidence!
masterofn001@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
trump now demands DEI.
DaddleDew@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I’m still pissed that Canada dropped theirs. It’s not discriminatory, it’s for all online services. Trump just wants to make his tech billionaire friends happy.

Oh no not tariffs, we won’t be able to afford… wait, hang on, we don’t pay them do we? Carry on.
jsonjson@lemmy.sdf.org 2 weeks ago
Right, except the tariff gets baked into the price your importer pays to bring the product into the US. So while you don’t cut a check to the US Treasury, your buyer does, and that either makes your product less competitive or forces you to eat the cost in your margins. But yeah, “carry on”.
Don_alForno@feddit.org 2 weeks ago
So far foreign companies don’t appear to be eating the cost. So the impact to their competitiveness seems to not be high enough to force them. It’s likely to stay that way.
It’s important to understand that if you place tariffs on all imports of a certain good, you also incentivize domestic manufacturers to increase their prices to just below those of the taxed imports, at least as long as domestic supply is lower than domestic demand (so they can expect to sell all they have anyway).
echodot@feddit.uk 2 weeks ago
Except if the product was available commercially in the United States they wouldn’t have been importing it in the first place, and they’re not going to step up factories in, how long has he been in power, 6 months, it only feels like forever.
If tariffs worked a senior president would have implemented the more subtly.

Again why are we taking the demented orange turd seriously in any capacity? This isn’t news this is the ramblings of a brain long turned to pudding

He’s pointing it down his own throat though.
Do what I want or I will crush my own economy is not much of a threat.
panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
This is not discrimination…
This is also one note point on why we need to diversify from us tech.
Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
not just diversity but abandon wherever you can

I’ve got a new PC arriving tomorrow ready to be loaded with Linux, my phone runs Graphene, my cloud data is here in Canada or the EU…

I suggest we create a new international coalition called NUS for Not US and present a united front of all-or-nothing, so that Trump can’t put pressure on individual countries anymore.
sircac@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
This thing called sovereignty…

What about the tariffs on countries that want to see what's in the Epstein files?

We kinda need all support we can get considering the blood-thirsty bear to the east. It would be very unwise at this point to go and poke the big hungry bear on the west. We can defend ourselves with a few sticks at best at this point. Or we have a bazooka, but politicians unwilling to use anything but a stick. One of those two.
Azal@pawb.social 2 weeks ago
The problem is the big hungry bears are looking at y’all trying to figure out how to divvy your area up, and only thing keeping the Trump one from just cozying completely up to the other is his inability to stick with a thought process for more than five minutes.
