    “turning”? 🤣🤣

You Yankees really do live in a bubble.

    • Xanthobilly@lemmy.world ⁨8⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

You know, it’s funny, the only time I read someone referring to Americans as Yankees is when it’s a post-Soviet bloc troll. Such a red flag to me.

[David Attenborough voice] Here we see the Yankee attempt to protect their bubble by claiming that anything which contradicts their perceived reality is the result of some dangerous foreigner.

However, while the Yankee does their best to isolate themselves from the perceived dangers outside, they are completely unaware that this paranoia is just one of the symptoms of the parasite that has begun to lodge itself deep within their brain. Without immediate assistance the Yankee will likely develop increasingly fascist tendencies before perishing in a rather gruesome manner as the other infected Yankee colony self destructs.

That kind of irrational logic will no doubt serve you well. Enjoy your future!

Definitely not a “all criticism of the US is literal soviet propaganda” coping mechanism

That sounds like the lazy thinking of a yank. With love from post-Soviet bloc, Canada.

Is there a word for when the media is constantly like 3+ years behind with “warnings” like this? I mean Jesus Christ, turning into?

    source
    • xodoh74984@lemmy.world ⁨7⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

      20+ years behind

      source
      • prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone ⁨6⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

True… Though things have accelerated at an alarming pace over the past few years

Better that they cover it than not. And the recent ramp up is worth reporting on, it’s a new level of weaponization compared to previous administrations.

I’m sure German could do a compound of “spät erkennen” or similar for a late realisation.

  • FinishingDutch@lemmy.world ⁨13⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Uh, do the kids these days really not know about the post-9/11 Patriot Act?

    source
    • Bloomcole@lemmy.world ⁨12⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

      Well Obama ‘fixed’ it.
Made it even more draconian but called it the Freedom Act.
Shit like that works every time.

God I miss the pre-9/11 US, when the worst thing happening was bad jokes on SNL about Bill Clinton and cigars.

Every part of the world is. It’s not unique to the US. Laws need to be passed to stop this.

Yes. Unfortunately, these systems are also a great gift for any upcoming fascist regime (like the Trump junta currently) which will not only happily continue using the existing infrastructure but also extend it like mad.

Maybe humanity’s greatest weaknesses overall: the lack of foresight and the lack of wisdom learned from historic precedents. Everything’s always about short-term goals, ignoring any long-term disadvantages. See also: climate disaster.

Bet you $500 that the next democrat president won’t tear down the system and will in fact give even more contracts to Palantir & co.

That’s a capitalism weakness, not a human weakness though.

Laws aren’t enough for something of this magnitude. The general population needs to grow to match the much greater challenges presented by modern technology, or we’re going to descend into another dark age until we do learn how to behave.

it’s already a surveillance state and both the red and blue party are complicit.

“Turning into” lol. The USA and all their partner countries like the ones in the 5 Eyes program have all been mass techno-surveillance states for decades.

    source
    • Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world ⁨12⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

The 5 eyes countries are not allowed to spy on their own citizens, but they can freely share data.

Isn’t there an obvious loophole here.

      source
      • propitiouspanda@lemmy.cafe ⁨8⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

The 5 eyes countries are not allowed to spy on their own citizens

I mean, they do it anyways.

        source
      • FreedomAdvocate@lemmy.net.au ⁨6⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

It’s almost like it was by design.

They also just spy on their own citizens anyway, because who is going to stop them?

        source
      • elvith@feddit.org ⁨11⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Shhhh… Don’t make it even more obvious. The fig leaf covering it is already so flaccid, that it might instantaneously turn into dust at the slightest disturbance.

Here’s a 20 year old album about it (it’s really cool that my favorite band is called ISIS. It’s neat how they broke up in 2010 but I still can only wear the merch at home)
