- Comment on I am so scared of nuclear war, how do I cope with it? 1 week ago:
It’s certainly plausible to survive the initial bombings by taking adequate shelter, you may even be able to stock up enough provisions to survive for several months. The problem is what follows.
Nuclear winter is hypothesized to change the climate to the point where growing food is impossible, potentially for several years. Any animals you can hunt before they eventually succumb to starvation will have been poisoned by the fallout, their meat contaminated.
The fallout will spread across the globe, making the air you breathe toxic, either by radiation poisoning or by any number of harmful construction materials such as asbestos which is now particleized and floating freely.
If by some miracle you do still cling to life by this point, you will either be completely alone or surrounded by people just as desperate to survive as you are. Only in fiction do either of those situations end well.
- Comment on I am so scared of nuclear war, how do I cope with it? 1 week ago:
Yeah, the heightened potential for nuclear annihilation is terrifying but there’s frankly nothing you can do to survive it. Even if you somehow lived though the bombings, there’s no corner of the globe where starvation nor irradiation would not reach. The Earth would be uninhabitable and death would be certain for most land animals.
It’s a tragic way to die and for the human race to cease to be. But it’s only death and that’s certain to happen one way or another. There are countless other ways you could die that are both within and beyond your control. Many are far more likely to happen than nuclear war. Do you fret about being killed in an accident every time you step into a car?
I know it’s a lot easier said than done but try to live in the now rather than the future. Plan for tomorrow but recognize that, unlike the present, the future is not guaranteed. Don’t take the present for granted, go do things that bring you fulfillment now because ultimately that is the only time that you have control over.

- Comment on Priorities 2 weeks ago:
The idea that you’re “supposed” to spend $X on a ring is absurd. Are you getting engaged to show off your wealth or to commit to a relationship? What does spending excessive amounts of money on a trinket have anything to do with the latter?
- Comment on Priorities 2 weeks ago:
I wouldn’t call myself frugal by any means, I generally support people spending their money on nice things that they find value in so long as they’re not living beyond their means.
That being said, IMHO dropping $5k on a ring makes you a god damn idiot.
- Comment on Do you preorder games? 2 weeks ago:
I never pre-order. I broke that rule exactly once and pre-ordered No Man’s Sky, boy did they make a fool out of me. Never again.
There are plenty of games I play that are on early access, the qualifier is whether the game is in a playable state and is fun to play (by account of online reviews or friend’s recommendations).

Another idea could be to see if local small businesses would be willing to sell your wares! I’ve seen stuff like handmade earrings and trinkets for sale at the register at small coffee shops in my town, plenty of other businesses also have paintings and photographs by local artists on the walls for sale. I have no insight on those agreements are made but I’d imagine they would ask for a commission.

You may have already looked into it and I’m not sure what the farmer’s market scene is where you are but I often see small scale makers selling wares at mine!

- Comment on Capitalism isn't the problem, THIS is the problem, and I've watched it roll over us for 40 years. [3 min. video] 5 weeks ago:
The fundamental argument here is that it’s not the system which incentivizes abusers that is the problem but rather the abusers who exploit the system. Sure, we can have another working class revolution, keep capitalism around and build institutions that keep exploitation in check but given enough time those with capital and the power that it represents will chip away at those institutions, continuing the cycle and harming people in the process.

This doesn’t bother me. It would bother me if 220 * 2 = 540. The equation in this meme should be something like 11 * 11= 121.

To be fair, it’s still at least 25% the size of the continental US, which isn’t insignificant. But that’s far from being about the same size as Africa as the projection depicts, not to mention only ~20% of it is even remotely hospitable.

They perceive any act in service to anybody but themselves as weakness. People say they’re like this because they’re afraid of being seen as feminine and that may be true for some but I think many others just want to live in a world where they have no accountability and can take whatever they want while being praised by the people around them for the scraps they leave behind.

At this point I feel like it’s totally plausible that the real reason he’s fighting so hard to keep the Epstein files locked away is not because they implicate him in the sex trafficking of underaged children but rather they reveal that he engaged in gay sex with his now political rivals.

I’ve been using cannabis for years and I love it. I am generally careful when it comes to developing dependencies. I check myself every once in a while and I don’t self medicate or pretend I’m taking it for pain or sleep or whatever. I take it because I like being high and I’m not ashamed of it.
I am worried about long-term effects. Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s really freak me out and it would suck if there turned out to be a link there. But there’s a good chance something else will kill me before I get there and I’m not sure I want to give up something I so thoroughly enjoy just to live a little longer.
I tried taking a hiatus in January. I read about mental clarity coming back and feeling more rested. I felt none of those things. I also didn’t feel any intense cravings or withdrawal symptoms. Just boredom and dissatisfaction with life in general and I don’t have a lot of hope of that changing with or without weed.
