It was a 1918 and a whole lot of monarchies were risking the same fate. The Civil War went on for four years after the Romanovs were shot as the whites advanced.
They were killed by the reds, and the threat they posed as royals was the reasoning behind their execution. Acknowledging the historical context to their deaths is hardly defending them, no more than acknowledging that Archduke Ferdinand got assassinated doesn’t make you a Serbian nationalist.
You can make remarks on whether it was a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ thing, but placing value judgements like it is an endorsement of any given politics is kind of this new mentality that is just abusive to history.
