  It was a 1918 and a whole lot of monarchies were risking the same fate. The Civil War went on for four years after the Romanovs were shot as the whites advanced.

  They were killed by the reds, and the threat they posed as royals was the reasoning behind their execution. Acknowledging the historical context to their deaths is hardly defending them, no more than acknowledging that Archduke Ferdinand got assassinated doesn’t make you a Serbian nationalist.

  You can make remarks on whether it was a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ thing, but placing value judgements like it is an endorsement of any given politics is kind of this new mentality that is just abusive to history.

  This is why Uday and Qusay Hussein had to die.

  A brutal dictator who promises to make his children into brutal dictators has implicated his family in his crimes.

  If he had wanted to keep them safe they would have fled or abdicated instead of keeping them as heirs to the throne.

    Who cares? What difference does it make if counter revolutionaries try to restore the old royal family or make a new one? The problem with monarchy is the system itself, not whoever happens to occupy the position of monarch. Human beings are more than a symbol, no matter how powerful that symbol may be. There is no possible justification for the murder of children.

    It be interesting to see if countries/people that won wars and brutally murdered everyone and caused complete demographic alteration has done better or worse long term.

      Can’t say if it makes you a tankie or not… but I can say that I wouldn’t be comfortable with you being within 200 feet of a middle school.

      Edit: sorry, 100m. I just assumed you were from the USA because of how comfortable you are with the idea of school aged kids getting shot.

    It’s the same mental gymnastics for magats. They both think what they want is good. And that people that don’t think like them must suffer to change their minds or die.

    And it’s so religiously ingrained in them. That the system cannot fail them. The system can only be failed. No amount of reality proving them wrong or resisting them will convince many of them otherwise. They will just double down on cruelty, oppression, and justification.

    There’s a lot of instances in history where the Chinese handled transitions of power very badly, to be fair.

    But yes, making the former emperor a street sweeper was absolutely genius.
