Most of the disinformation we’re exposed to comes from billionaires, whose goal is to keep the lower and middle classes fighting with each other so that they . . . the rich . . . can run off with all the f*cking money.
whileloop@lemmy.world 1 year ago
The most obvious Psyop ever. And it’s working. Lovely.
hark@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Ah yes, people in the US are angry because of those darned Chinese and not because everything doubled in price, they can’t afford rent, they’re worked to death, and their political choices are between a death cult and a do-nothing party.
bassomitron@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It can be from numerous sources. What you listed above are the flames already ignited, CCP and Russia are simply fanning them. Ironically, Facebook et al. do the same thing, as studies have proven that generating outrage is one of the most effective engagement tools for getting clicks, which means more time spent on their sites for users to see/potentially engage with advertisements.
foggy@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It’s funny, around 2015 I quit Facebook when I noticed that every time I topped that little f icon, I’d end up angry a few minutes later.
Then I noticed it with my dad. I brought it up with friends and they noticed it too.
It feels like what makes us angry is for sale, and we’re being delivered it nonstop to drive engagement, divide us, further political agendas.
It feels like some weird scifi

Idk if it’s related but rage bait is a thing outside of geopolitical interests. YouTube, every news outlet, TV shows, et al.
Negativity sells, and there’s a reason for it.
dangblingus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 year ago
More than just the negativity aspect, everyone wants to seem like a smartypants these days and correct everyone. They fall hook line and sinker for obvious rage bait, when it’s like “why do you even care about that shitty video bro?”
Hazdaz@lemmy.world 1 year ago
You see that shit literally every single day on Lemmy and Reddit and every other social media platform.
A divided America means a more powerful Russia and China and the benefactor tends to be the Republican party who has members, like Trump himself, who are in the pocket of these foreign nations.
The scariest thing isn’t even that it is happening.
The scariest part is that so many just don’t realize it is happening. They think it only happens elsewhere or in some dark corner of the web. Literally people you respond to and posts you upvote and downvote are part of this disinformation campaign. Every time you see a post that is painting an especially bleak picture of the economy or our future, step back and think that this could very well be another one of many posts by trolls looking to create dissent, get people angry or apathetic toward our country and your fellow Americans.
Cryophilia@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Eh, CCP trolls are easy to flush out. They’re not allowed to criticize China. If you suspect someone is trolling, just ask em to say anything negative about the CCP at all.
It’s the Russians who have the gold standard in trolling. They can wish death on Putin, they can make pro-Ukraine statements, they have no limits. Anything that advances their cause.
fosforus@sopuli.xyz 1 year ago
They’re not allowed to criticize China.
I wonder if they really have such a weak spot.
K1nsey6@lemmy.world 1 year ago
A divided America means a more powerful Russia and China
A divided Unites States keeps the ruling class in power, with divisions created by the duopoly. Trying to blame it on other countries when our common enemies are in government is pure projection
Jamie@jamie.moe 1 year ago
benefactor tends to be the Republican party who has members, like Trump himself, who are in the pocket of these foreign nations.
Generally, the benefactors are most rich people in general. If everybody’s getting angry at each other about pronouns and medical treatment for a fraction of a percentile of people, they’re not paying attention to the rich who get richer from everyone else getting poorer.
You can replace trans rights with whatever overblown topic you choose, I’m just using it as an example because it’s topical. But the amount of legislative cost being dedicated to putting down maybe 0.2% of the overall population is ridiculous. That same energy could be spent doing literally anything else productive.
scarabic@lemmy.world 1 year ago
A while back I caught my Arabic relatives from the old country trading a Facebook article about how 7 of the 9 US Supreme Court justices were Jewish, proving that the US is a puppet of the Jews. I had to use the translate feature to understand what they were talking about, but they all speak English and I showed them definitive evidence of the religious affiliation of every justice, demonstrating that they were not 7/9 Jewish.
They said “okay maybe not.”
I said “So maybe the US isn’t a puppet of a Jewish conspiracy?”
They said “oh no, it definitely still is.”
People are 100% out there manufacturing disinformation to advance their agendas, and for Russia and China, the polarizing rancor in the US is an agenda unto itself.
And we are incredibly susceptible to this. It will only change with critical thinking skills among the general populace. I forged mine in the decades prior to the internet even existing. I have zero notion how anyone forged theirs today, growing up in a roiling soup of disinformation.
KevonLooney@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Your relatives have a “desire to believe” that Jewish people control the US government. You can’t disprove desire, just each individual belief that arises from it.
Your best bet is to point their desire out to them. Maybe ask if there is anything that would disprove it. When they say “no”, leave it at that. Let them realize that their belief is based on opinion not fact.
This only works with people with whom you have a good relationship.
scarabic@lemmy.world 1 year ago
That’s good advice. Realistically they have a whole trove of things they would throw at me, many of which would be… what’s that word for when you can’t disprove something conclusively?

It’s definitely not the nonstop right-wing hate machine media infrastructure that’s entrenched in American life. And it’s most certainly not an American capitalist class that hoards the wealth and has every incentive to keep the working class at each others’ throats.
It must be cHiNeSe pRoPaGaNdA
Fleshtrap@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Couldn’t they be related if true? Or why not both?
impiri@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Thank you for posing that question! I think the tendency to blame Russia/China/whomever is a complete failure to address the actual root of the issue.
If everyone who works for a non-American intelligence agency suddenly lost the ability to post on the internet, would Americans start getting along better? Or would a significant percentage of Americans still have a reactionary hate fest running on their televisions every waking hour, their opinions reinforced by Facebook echo chambers full of other actual Americans? I think the difference would be to small as to be imperceptible.
When it comes to tearing each other apart and working against our shared interests, America has a well-oiled machine running that hardly requires any foreign intervention.
pimento64@sopuli.xyz 1 year ago
No no no no no you’re only allowed to align your opinion along team lines or you’re a radical centrist
SCB@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Literally the people you hate, and the people you share these opinions with, are both victims of propaganda from Russia and China
Their goal is not to shape American ideology but to fan flames of discontent.

The US government has been using the same tactics against my country for decades. So, I’m not too upset by this.

Because the disinformation campaigns are taking place in digital forums.

Two can play at that game. I play my part by shitting on CCP on 4chan. They have many paid shills there who hang out at /pol/. Just a little bit of that old ultratrolling to get under their skin.

Straight out of Russia’s playbook. Support BLM protests and racist organizations at the same time. I’m not surprised China caught on. Sure would be nice if the US and China could just get along.
CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Well, people like Newt and Rush have been at it a long time, so we probably don’t need that much help.

Floey@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Aren’t claims of such propaganda just further fuel to the hate machine? People go around saying anyone who disagrees with them is a propagandized sheep, an NPC. Seeing all the people you are talking to as brainwashed, not in the normal way that everyone is but in some additional special way, does not seem conducive to healthy discourse.
Cryophilia@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I mean sure, but that’s radically different from acknowledging that there are state backed trolls out there with an agenda.

Lemmy is being bombarded with US “politics” lately. I keep adding filters but it’s not enough to fight all the -definitelly organic totally not posted by bots- american propaganda.
K1nsey6@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Red scare propaganda bullshit, the duopoly weaponizing identity politics is whats fueling people being angry with each other. They have us fighting bullshit culture wars while the ruling class is laser focused on waging class war.

NTD.com, or New Tang News, is a Falun Gong-funded organization founded in NYC in 2001. It is owned by Epoch Media Group, the owners of the Epoch Times. It leans strongly right and does not check its facts. While still potentially capable of reporting true things, this is one of the least reliable sources out there.

fubo@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Falun Gong is basically Chinese Fascist Scientology.
However, the things that the China regime does to Falun Gong members are still crimes against humanity.
Both of those things can be true at the same time.
MaxVoltage@lemmy.world 1 year ago
yea im a communist but all cops are pigs lmao. even ones who supposedly are also party members
OldWoodFrame@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Yeah and specifically they really hate China for persecuting their “movement.” So this article is probably less than useless.
That said, radicalized subsets of Americans against others has been the point of Russian propaganda since time immemorial, I’m sure it IS the point of CCP propaganda too. But I’d never consider the Falun Gong news outlet reputable evidence of that fact.
Wahots@pawb.social 1 year ago
Thank you for raising awareness! Didn’t recognize NTD.
