Guess what, I never created an account. I just can’t get into that quick content, I find it boring after 5 minutes, without substance. I tried both youtube shorts and instagram reels, boring! I prefer long talks or analysis on youtube.

I could get behind Vine back in the day, because it’s 6 second time limit bred a lot of creativity. But that’s about it

The guy literally said to ramp up government surveillance so that citizens are on their best behaviour. So anyone still using TikTok after this is asking for it.

wait, so chinese spying is fine, but american spying is not? So why are so many people on faecesbook then?

    • throws_lemy@reddthat.com ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

unlike us here, people on feacesbook and instagram never sh*t on suckerberg?

Are you not aware of the people who shit on facebook? I think most reddit and reddit to lemmy users hate Facebook.

Head to pcgaming, pcmasterrace, steam deck subs and you’ll also see hate for Microsoft. Partly due to copilot, hate of online account being pushed, and being spyware.

Same for Google too with them being seen as a company that is spying on everyone which is why roms like GrapheneOS gets brought up.

Now usage is still high partly due to some people’s dependency on it for productivity, but criticism and hate is there. Even China and Russia is stuck using Microsoft among regular consumers despite them having the most reason to not trust US software.

I feel like I remember the tankies saying something about there being no potential issues with using TikTok. Has there been any reaction in the triad?

    source
    • silentjohn@lemmy.ml ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Tiktok was THE platform for pro-gaza content and solidarity. Leaks from Congress proves this. It’s a shell of what it once was now that the US oligarchs are in control of it and have turned it into their right wing spyware platform.

Blocked for unironically using the word ‘tankie’.

I mean, you guys have legitimately genocidal folks like yogthos that your admins pat on the head as they bludgeon their way through every conversation with 4chan speak. I do not respect you enough to feel offended by your absence. If you don’t like the word, sort out your tankie users.

The issues with tiktok started in 2020 when Trump threatened to ban it after they organized RSVPing one of his rallies and he performed in a mostly empty stadium.

Tiktok responded by hiring state department ghouls to oversee moderation, then 2020 popped off and they clamped down even harder.

There were never issues with the chinese government. The issue was always with the US government.

the issues with tiktok started when it was first announced. It’s sad that it got “heroified” through the gaza events

It was an almost perfect medium for sharing cooking videos and recipes, can anyone suggest a replacement?

Don’t worry I’ve already uninstalled it (months ago when Ellison bought a majority stake) but I haven’t found a replacement short-form video platform for recipes yet

Is nobody else concerned that “they” know when software is installed or uninstalled?

    source
    • Jyek@sh.itjust.works ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

No? Why wouldn’t they know? Lots of ways to track that data. Google and apple both keep that data for statistics and app popularity tracking.

      source
      • Ach@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I love that this guy thinks the multiple billion dollar companies that make his smart phone exist that we know are selling our data thinks those same comapanies aren’t watching everything we do.

That’s right buddy. Amidst all these articles about data mining, nobody is watching what you do on your phone.

Dude, you think they don’t know when you uninstall an app? Bill Gates has audio of you jerking off and can name time website and time and date he got the audio.

iOS and Android provide these statistics to app developers. Anonymized stats on installs and account statuses are totally fair telemetry imo.

    1. Good

    2. It was the same brand of red fascism before and after. Algorithm and databases still in Beijing, a few days ago the backup on Oracle went online.

    source
  • whotookkarl@lemmy.dbzer0.com ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

The fascists are doing a hard push on all social media in general ramping up at least since a few weeks ago. Seth Andrew’s thinking atheist channel was dropped for no reason from yt, which by itself isn’t unheard of, but several other popular religious debate channels (deconstruction zone, allegedly Ian, etc) are seeing a huge drop in opposition, religious callers starting at the same time when much of those were coming from TikTok giving them a fair shake at recommendations based on their view counts. Yt is delisting or excluding from search results videos more now instead of demonetizing as well.

While installs are up by how much?

    source
    • formergijoe@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Doesn’t mention installs for tiktok, but does mention that tiktok usage remained flat, but competing apps have seen an increase in downloads.

“However, the increase in uninstalls has not translated into a meaningful drop in U.S. usage.

TikTok’s active user levels in the U.S. have remained relatively flat compared with the previous week, according to Sensor Tower.

Competing apps, however, have seen a bump in interest. Sensor Tower data shows U.S. downloads for UpScrolled increased more than tenfold compared with the prior week, while Skylight Social rose 919% and Chinese-owned Rednote climbed 53% week over week.”

Mildly entertained how fast it went from a bill to give the executive power to designate applications as security threats and ban them to then it being abused. A lot of folks saying the EFF and ACLU were wrong this time and then the EFF and ACLU being right less than 2 years after the bill passing. And it’s not like TikTok has been around all that long. 2021 all the pearl clutching about China’s influence ruining the youth just look at the zoomers entering the workforce - the app was popular for like 2 years at that point. Everyone people were complaining about were raised on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter. Not only that, TikTok was about the only social media platform that leftist were pretty good at compared to right wingers. The ridiculous dichotomy of leftist supporting a bill to ban TikTok while TikTok was core to the lefts grassroots outreach and networking. So now TikTok is right wing owned and Instagram and YouTube are still the same kind of content that people blamed TikTok for and have had for much longer.

That bill in 2024 was a Democratic Party self own especially when the bill wasn’t even TikTok specific. Somehow saw masked plain clothes federal agents kidnapping people in 2020 to pretty much no consequence and decided in 2024, the federal government won’t abuse this bill
