Are they implying that you are flat, tasteless, and boring? Or maybe they are saying you are clean, well-mannered, and fulfilling?

Then why are you asking internet strangers? ask your date, they’re the only person able to answer your question.
Flamekebab@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
The inclusion of “fresh” makes this tremendously confusing.
DagwoodIII@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
Context matters.
“Sir” can be an insult, and “asshat” can be a compliment.
slazer2au@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Depends on context.

Instead of doing this thing where you fret about it and ask other people, ask the guy.

White bread is not inherently ugly/disgusting, so this is one that genuinely can go either way.
But if some rando calls me “white bread”, I’d assume it’s a race-based insult, along the lines of “cracker”.
xploit@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Sourdough? Probably a compliment.
Anything else, who knows people have different tastes…palordrolap@fedia.io 3 weeks ago
Warm freshly baked white bread is 10/10 for a bread lover.*
Supermarket own-brand plain white sliced loaf is generally ordinary, basic and inexpensive, but nonetheless acceptable. 5/10.
This knowledge may raise more questions than answers, but it may help narrow the scope.
* Scale may extend past 10 for sufficiently exotic bread. Ask the continental Europeans offended by that 10/10 rating.

Hey, Bread Guy, do you know the Mango Guy?
Grimtuck@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Tastes delicious but is not necessarily good for you. Can be hard on the outside while soft and fluffy inside. Is often the cheapest bread while offering little nourishment. Can make you feel bloated.

My guess is that he fumbled saying “you’re the best thing since sliced bread”. He’s probably now cringing and mentally kicking himself for it.

“White bread ass motherfucker…”
“Thanks!”

Depends on how they meant it.

Compliment

I’m pretty sure there’s a story here. Cannot pass judgement until I hear it.

There are no answers here, only more questions - and it is glorious.
khannie@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
It’s ambiguous. Fresh white bread could be considered both amazing or dull.
Did you feel like the date went well?
If it was meant as an insult then the guy is a cunt. Did he give off cunt vibes?
A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 3 weeks ago
I think it’s a clever way of saying “I find you appealing just the way you are, but not uncritically so.”
null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
Who knows what this guy really meant but we can probably infer some things.
He did not take the opportunity to say “You’re really amazing and interesting and smart and funny” or anything similar.
It’s also a weird thing to say.
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
Just ask the guy.
He could be thinking of like a bakery, in which case I’d say it’s a compliment.
klemptor@startrek.website 3 weeks ago
In that context it usually means he thinks you’re boring.
passepartout@feddit.org 3 weeks ago
There is obviously a lot to unpack here, most of it is just plain gibberish. The best option here, as always, is to ask him directly.
Pro: Fresh white bread can be very delicious. It is soft and fluffy, and depending on the freshness even still warm, which are all really nice things to be associated with imho. It is also versatile, as it can be crafted to e.g. a list of delicious sandwiches. The focus on the whiteness of the bread may be in remembrance to a time when paleness was a female beauty standard.
Contra: It is not the healthiest choice of breads, but not a lot of wheat products are. If I’m not mistaken, it could also be a slur for people with a light skin tone.
