Corporate Memphis. As a student I was tasked with drawing these ad nauseum with adobe illustrator.
HelloHotel@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I really dont want to KYC. It brings risks with it.
penguin202124@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Hey, bring North Africa out of this!
kinsnik@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
surely that means that they will follow children privacy protection laws and not track information of anyone who they can’t verify is an adult, right?
right?
KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Actually yeah Google famously deleted the ad id of everyone under 13 that they knew about The problem is kids always lie about their age when asked.

Youtube is lost
homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Yep. And we gave it a decade and a half of our videos. Now we can’t (don’t want to) get them out of there and put them somewhere else.
All according to plan.
DisOne@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Just checked: my YT account is old enough to be starting its first year of uni. Guess I don’t have to worry about accessing adult content, but ye gods I’m auld…
datavoid@lemmy.ml 3 weeks ago
Same here (assuming account was a genius who graduated high school like 3 years early and then got advanced placement in uni)
crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
DuckDuckGo browser my friend. The “Duck Player” feature plays YT videos in-browser without ads or other tracking
webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
Its actually bing under the hood which does the same.
Its fine, and it works but i think people should be more aware of the fact that duck is just a wrapper with privacy features and is officially partnered with ms who they still allow to track you.

What’s a better alternative?
Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
What did i miss?
artyom@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
YouTube is using “AI” to determine who is an adult and is allowed to access “adult” content. Predictably, it is wrong. A lot.
Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
Oh that
baggins@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
Their AI thinks OP is mentally a child.
SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 3 weeks ago
“you’ve watched too much brainrot on sharts. Please verify that you’re an adult. Because… really? That much??”
KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Right-Wing governments around the world are passing these child protection laws that are forcing tech companies to ask for your ID, which none of us want to happen
Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
I know about that. Thought it was a new thing i didnt get wind off

I have concerning questions I havent seen addressed other places.
- Does this effect signed out users diffrently? How so?
- how will this effect discoverability? (soft querrying)
- will this effect things like hiding or altering the
videos uploaded by channel
list? (hard querrying) - if they fuck with hard querrying, how will this throw of my tools?
- for adults that cant or dont want to KYC, what options will there be?
- can alteternate Word Of Mouth discoverability be used?

and once your “Verified”, they now can connect a name to an account. Congrats! In some areas of the world, they are looking for certain things you are watching and “making notes”. Or just selling all that info away.

I’ve never been asked for any of this stuff but I think it’s literally because my email account is so old.
neblem@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Yeah I’m probably in the same boat, got love being an old.
GnuLinuxDude@lemmy.ml 3 weeks ago
I think we are seeing the beginning of the end of an open internet. Taking a few legitimate problems and exploding them up to destroy anonymity online. And VPNs are not the solution when using privacy-preserving workarounds are either outlawed or just don’t work on any major website.
That it goes hand-in-hand (especially in the USA) with a neo-fascist right wing in control opposed by the most limp-dick “left” is extra troubling. What was the inception point for this trend? Oct 7, 2023? Were too many people shown images on TikTok of Palestinian civilians being mercilessly bombed?
captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
I haven’t seen this fuckery, but the Gmail account I log into Youtube with was created in 2006, so from this they might deduce the user is at least 20 years old.
cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
google: we’re using ai for everything this is great
ai: sorry i couldn’t do this
google: ok please do the thing manually oops our badyeah ai is great
Reygle@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I think you should be looking at the governments not at Google. This is a law that was passed that is driving this. Google certainly doesn’t want to fucking do this because it would impact their ad revenue.
Reygle@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Oh I didn’t need this particular thing that’s happening to have a solid, SOLID reason to tell Google off.
krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
The only things on YouTube I have ever found worth watching, in the entire history of the platform, are kurzgesagt, PBS space time, let’s game it out, and the hydraulic press channel.
Four channels over… what, 20+ years of it existing?
You complain and you piss and you moan about a garbage service that serves garbage content becoming more garbage-like by the day, but it’s garbage all the way down and always has been.
Vupware@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
That’s not true. YouTube is a goldmine of knowledge and entertainment and humanity. You just can’t trust the algorithm to get you there.
breadguy@kbin.earth 3 weeks ago
you know public masturbation is still illegal
KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Only knowing those channels is not the flex you think it is. It just makes you look super stupid man.
Zephorah@discuss.online 3 weeks ago
The search function is terrible. No matter how you filter it, even if the pseudo functional filters work it’s just the most subscribed to garbage I’ve repeatedly tried not to see on the home page. There’s no way to permanently block the garbage I never want to see. It’s an endless repeat loop of sameness. The thumbnails are the worst. Hobby channels are thus dead, it’s the same 50 videos I keep saying “not interested” to instead of anything fresh or new.
I go there for Josh Johnson and a couple others, there’s no way to find decent content creators any more in that dumpster fire.
neblem@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
You can always just subscribe to your favorite creators via RSS instead of relying on their subscription tools. It does kill some discovery potential but its not like you still don’t get recommendations when going to the video.
Zephorah@discuss.online 3 weeks ago
It’s literally all the same vids. Or things I already watched 5 years ago.
knatschus@discuss.tchncs.de 3 weeks ago
Same for me, I love taking peeks into rabbit holes without going too deep and for years YouTube was perfect for that. Get a glance of a community and move on while sometimes leaving a subscription for outstanding creators. Now it forces me down into small bubbles and I hate it.
The search function also became useless outside of music since almost everyone uses click bait titles.

We can't determine if you are an adult.
But we can determine that you are old enough to see credit card ads.
