Let’s have a little online conference on lemmy to discuss ways to get people to care more about their privacy. Things might be different than 2010 now:
maybe we just need the correct memes (in the Dawkins sense) to infect people with to make privacy a major issue on people’s minds.
Like what? I still doubt whatever data brokers share about me (my public information that could have been found in a phone book, activity shared by websites, voluntary information, metadata) to target advertisements is all that sensitive.
Data vulnerable to identity theft & fraud, however, is important to protect, laws protect them, and I take measures to protect them. Security isn’t perfect, however, and this information will leak.
Ironically, the people who pass laws to safeguard the junk data that isn’t sensitive (hello, cookie consent banners) also pass laws to compel the risky disclosure of sensitive information for identification. They have privacy entirely backward.
Most people have been trained from a young age to value convenience over basically everything else. People also don’t like to step out of their comfort zone, and not having social media is seen by some as a social taboo and as isolationary by some.
I have trouble dating. People keep asking me how I expect to date without Instagram.

Yep, inter-socially policed techno fascism is here to stay. I haven’t had a cellphone for 2 years. The amount of objective problems this causes in my life is somewhere between negligible to none. The amount of social problems this causes me is endless - people become personally offended that they can’t demand to chat with me at their liberty.
We’re pretty much at the point where you can’t even expect to get a job without some form of social media presence. I hate it. I used to be able to google myself and find literally nothing.

Social media has been specifically tuned to exploit human nature.

This is the deal. Yes. People, at least her in the US, equate personal liberty with convenience; which is why you saw people willing to kidnap governors over being forced to wear a facemask, or attacking Red Lobster employees for being slow in bringing another basket of cheese biscuits.
Also why dead kids aren’t enough to get real progress on gun control.
I think when these tariffs really roll downhill and the supply chain is reconfigured within the next two years, the real and permanent impacts of Donald’s cavalier and reckless economic policies will be in full effect.
I figure they can already simulate what I will do for 300 years, so I don’t bother anymore.

I can assure you, most of them still don’t care.
This is accurate. I have a degoogled phone, no mainstream social media, and Linux OS. I have talked to my wife about the reason for my choices, so she is not ignorant about privacy or data gathering issues. She still uses Instagram and Facebook etc. And while she is a bit alarmed at bill C-2 being tabled in Canada (which would share Canadian private citizen info with the USA) I doubt she will think about it next week.
I can’t even get her to use a password manager properly. She used the same password everywhere and it scares me.

I’d hope current events would be the counter argument. Take your pick regarding country/continent and event. I’m being intentionally vague to ensure I don’t run afoul of the rules of the sidebar, but there are legitimately many examples currently, some mentioned by others in this discussion.

The UK, the EU and soon the U.S. making it mandatory to give your ID when you want to see anything “NSFW”.
Maybe also payment processors folding before puritan christian nationalists.
That seems very different from social media & opt-ins to data brokers of browsing activity, public information, voluntary information, metadata.
Or visiting trans or other LGBTQ reources. Or aborion, mental health, autism, or whatever else they decice to persecute next.
This isn’t just a threat to what they don’t like now. We’ve seen how Trump turned perfectly normal things into targets. It’s a threat to whatever they decide they don’t like in the future.

Moreover, it is setting a dangerous precedent for rest of the world, especially countries already leaning towards fascism.

US already does so in some states. It just isn’t federally mandatory… yet.
‘NSFW’ includes the antifascist subreddit and subreddits talking about Israel and Gaza.

Basically, we’ve been waiting since the early 2010s for people in the “i have nothing to hide club” to figure out why they should protect their info. Now, they have built psychological profiles on us all to the point that their surveillance algos know what we are doing before we do. When the government further destabilizes just a little bit, everything we’ve ever done will be used against us. They will ramp up the abise as soon as they can get away with it. God help these company executives who are furries on the weekend and have unicorn tail buttplugs at parties. So many people are going to be cancelled over puritain rhetoric for nonsense tribial quirks that nobody should give af about.
If they’re coming for us anyway then give them a middle finger instead of a whimper. Wear your buttplug with pride.

You’re too optimistic here. Such people will only realise their error if something bad happens to them that also screams at them that it was only possible because of their privacy eroding. They don’t usually connect the dots themselves.

I’ve tried helping some spicy leftist groups and I’m still floored by how little the groups of people care who should absolutely know better. They will talk a big game but when it actually comes to implementation everyone immediately goes all “nothing to hide” like their years of constant guillotine reacts and memes won’t be pulled out in court the second they try to argue entrapment against some bullshit ci/undercover op.
I don’t think many people realize how aggressive a digital search warrant can get if you or someone dumber than you fucks around and finds that main character energy. At the end of the day you gotta absolutely minimize the amount of data that’s retained long term on systems.
Yep it’s frustrating. The convenience argument doesn’t hold true anymore either. There was once a time where encrypted messaging services and self-hosted solutions were much trickier to on-board. That’s not the case anymore and even with the ability to just download and launch some software that does all this for you people still choose oppressive and unsafe technologies / providers.
My boss literally said this to me yesterday. He was also outwardly concerned when I told him I used a VPN and closed my Facebook account.

The quality of life is already fucked, and that’s what caused those people to rally behind current regimes who promised to fix everything using whatever opportunistic buzzwords like immigrants or national volk, turning to reaction.
I mean the lack of privacy directly fucking them over. They have already proven to be unable to extrapolate actions leading to consequences beyond like 1 or 2 steps.
It will severely suck very, very soon. As soon as they destabilize govs enough to get away with severe abuse of info.

When raising awareness with my friends I ask them about their sexual preferences. They all laugh and say its obvious wheyer they’re straight, gay or whatever and then I say I one really asked for that. I ask them to disclose how they get off. Their filthiest porn fantasies. Then it gets a bit more difficult for them but it’s all ask giggles. Next question is the exact amount on their bank account and their exact monthly wage. Strangely, that’s something most of them won’t disclose. I ask for their insecurities and they go with superficial things but when I keep pushing about the real insecurities it get hard for them.
When I explain that what they find hard to share with a friend of most likely out in the open for sale with data brokers they get uncomfortable.
Social media knows how much you visit you coworkers profile and get you have a crush on therm. Porn sites know your deepest desires. Amazon had a pretty good insight in your earnings.
It’s all our there so use a decent VPN , block as many trackers as you can and at least use fake online profiles as much as you can. It’s a start and not as difficult or bothersome as it seems.
