- Comment on Chinese companies are largest shareholders in two Australian mines producing minerals vital for Beijing's hypersonic missiles, helping China to access key resources 1 week ago:
There’s no reason to be militarily afraid of China even with them having a more powerful military than us. Geopolitically a war between us wouldn’t benefit either and any such war would be entirely unwinnable for whoever initiates.
Escalations between our countries with regards to naval exercises are worrying, however the Australian government could if they wanted to diplomatically end any live fire exercise close to Australia by Chinese warships. All they would have to do is promise to stop sailing warships through the South China sea and the Taiwan strait under the pretext that China would stop its exercises near Australia too. The Australian government isn’t making that decision because it believes its interests in South East Asia are more important than live fire testing off the coast. Probably because they can leverage that fear amongst the gullible and cowardly to garner support for military spending and draw attention away from movements insisting on real change and building a more equal Australia.

True but I still want to know if older people actually want expensive housing.

Yeah? I’m still way more concerned with how the profits of these mining operations are distributed to Australians.

I am way more concerned with how the profits from these mines are distributed to Australians as opposed to the strategic consequences of selling these resources to China.

I’m not old but do old people actually want expensive housing? All my friends (zoomers) just want houses to be cheaper. I literally could not care less if that would theoretically make me less wealthy. I just want to afford things

- Comment on Mosquito Sprites 2 months ago:
Would have been a broader study on acoustic based methods of reducing mosquito bites probably with the goal of preventing the spread of malaria. In this broader study they probably tried a whole bunch of sounds/tones with varying levels of success. They might have tried this particular song but more likely they just found that any level of rhythmic sound would reduce mosquito activity in the area. A clever journalist would then extrapolate the study into an attention grabbing headline to get views on their article. From that the “meme” spreads across social media.
-pulled straight out my ass, go find the actual study if you really care.

Hahahaha. It’s just a date mate, why not go for it?
Its more typical to be introduced to partners through social media or friends than from family where I live but all sorts of cultures do it in all sorts of ways. You set your own boundaries if you feel like your dad is overstepping there are plenty of ways to go about it. Parents are naturally concerned for their kids and the world we live in pushes young people to stay at home longer and push back starting a family. That can be very concerning for parents you grew up without such socioeconomic pressures.
Typically the way I go about things with my parents (and all people in general) is I don’t mention things I don’t want them involved with.

Guys it’s fine, you’re overreacting. I only use local instances of AI and I always ask it for consent before using it to deepfake porn of my favorite celebrities in their debut roles. You vegans are overreacting and taking it too far. Humanity has been using AI for like 6 months now and our bodies aren’t biologically ready to go back to writing our own homework. You really need to check your privilege; we can’t all afford fancy tools like GIMP to make our own art.

I don’t think obscuring the truth because people will react badly to it is a worthwhile endeavor. How people choose to react to the truth is up to them, they deserve it regardless. What these people are feeling is the emotional culmination of Australia’s horrific history known as “the stolen generation.” We would all be happier to forget it. we shouldn’t though.
- Comment on ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’: the Australian push to have all adopted people told their full history and identity 3 months ago:
Right so a doctor would say “any history of x” and you could ask and get an honest answer.
Sure, only being able to reply “I don’t know” isn’t helpful. But it’s far better than telling the doctor false information that you believe to be true because you are under the impression that you know who your biological parents are
That’s exactly why adopted children should be required to know they are adopted.

Right but if a doctor asked you to check with your biological mother you would know who to go to and be able to get accurate information.

- Comment on now that i have a cat, i truly understand the the sentiment of mr wick 3 months ago:
In my opinion, John wick lashed out because of grief from the passing of his wife not the death of his dog or theft of his car. She died unexpectedly and without reason. There was nothing he could do and no one to blame, left only with his grief and sense of loss. Until suddenly there wasn’t. With the death of the dog, his wife’s last gift to him, there was someone to blame, and something he could do. He could get justice. John didn’t kill to get revenge, he murdered those people because of the overwhelming grief he was sinking in and unable to properly deal with. The people he killed were unrelated to the reason he was killing. In that way John is the same as the cocky kid who killed a dog because he felt hurt.
- Comment on A fair punishment for the obscene hoarding of wealth 3 months ago:
There is no justice after death. The only way to make things right is to make them right now.
