Do you perhaps fathom how unhelpful and standoffish single word replies are? Conversation is an exchange. If you are not at the very least matching their verbosity and sharing information that is also related to what they’re saying, you’re giving them very little to work with.
But I usually have the opposite problem: my prose is purple as hell. I’m ridiculously verbose and I over share to an absurd degree.

damn

Yes, you’re right, but I think that was the point of that comment: to demonstrate to OP how single-word answers to questions aren’t helpful when trying to engage in conversation, by mirroring their own behavior back at them.
ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com 5 days ago
I would just stop texting you
EmilyIsTrans@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 days ago
I would assume you don’t want to talk to me (as in, don’t like talking to me) and are trying to end the conversation as quickly as possible. Why aren’t you asking questions? Or even writing more than one word responses? You can write formally or dry, I do, but like, you have a responsibility to uphold your end of the conversation.
MelonYellow@lemmy.ca 5 days ago
Just reading that, you come off uninterested.
sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world 5 days ago
A conversation should go back and forth with questions and comments. Your text example was one person doing their part, but you did not do yours. Calling it “dry” was pretty kind of them. This is unfriendly bordering on rude.
SolidShake@lemmy.world 4 days ago
A question that can be answered with one word isn’t dry, boring or rude. The person asking the questions is just an idiot and isn’t asking questions that require at least 2 words.
“Are you busy today?” Can be answered with “yes” or “no”. You don’t have to give a reason why automatically.
None of these questions has a “why?” In them. It’s not an interview dude.

Alright, here’s some basic advice for when you want to have a conversation.
If someone asks you a question that can be suitably answered with one or two words, it can be helpful to append a question of one’s own to the response. Even returning the same question is often sufficient.
Consider:
X: Hey, how’s it going?
Y: Good.vs
X: Hey, how’s it going?
Y: Not bad, yourself?Where the former leaves person X having to either carry the conversation onwards by formulating another question on the spot or just disengage, the latter keeps the conversation going by giving them a question from which they can either springboard into a more detailed response or pivot to another topic.

If you want a conversation to continue, you need to ask questions or provide some sort of continuation. Otherwise this reads one sided.

Now, what do you consider to be dry texting? Can you re-create your responses in the provided example to make them “dry” in your understanding of the word?
TempermentalAnomaly@lemmy.world 4 days ago
What do imagine a dry texter would responded in that situation?
Solumbran@lemmy.world 5 days ago
Just imagine someone like you talking with you. How does it work?
I can’t even imagine that it would last more than two messages. It’s not a conversation if only one person is talking.

You are horrible man. Dry implies a kind of wit. You give nothing. Nothing. How could you do nothing? Even existing is something. What did you do while existing? Sit sofa? Eat? Nap?

Do you have to ask? Why do you have zero desire to share anything with your friends? Dry isn’t the word I’d use, but “bothered” sure is. You text like you want them to piss off and you want them to know it without saying it.

If I was Grey Texter, I’d think you were busy, uninterested, rude, or upset (When I’m upset my texts are drier but I still make an effort)

capitalizing the first letter makes you look like you were born in the 1970s
one-word replies make you seem disinterested
Tgo_up@lemm.ee 4 days ago
You actively avoid capitalising the first letter?

My phone auto capitalizes the first letter.

Bare minimim add some punctuation if you are really going to stick with one word replies
“Good!” comes off happy or excited “Good?” is confused and unsure “Good.” is just a touch more serious than no punctuation
I’m not fantastic at conversations but adding just a little something is fundemental to keep the ball rolling. It gives them something to go off of.
“No I didn’t do much, you?”
lud@lemm.ee 4 days ago
No absolutely don’t use full stops for one word replies. It can come across as very rude.
SolidShake@lemmy.world 4 days ago
Seems like an issue with whoever is reading the one word text then.
Walk_blesseD@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 days ago
Yeah, in this sort of context it’d just come across as trying to shut down the conversation even harder than it already does.

You clearly don’t like texting, and only do it out of some sense of social obligation.
The kind of thing one might call Malicious Compliance.Stache_@lemmy.ml 4 days ago
Yeah I’m torn, I don’t really like texting since I think I express myself a lot better in person, so I think I probably come off as a bit dry. But this is pretty rough. Even if you didn’t do anything for the day, I’d say something more than just “nothing”

You know the answer to this question, and the answer is yes, yes you are a dry texter.
breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca 5 days ago
How would you define “dry texter”? How would a dry texter reply to those messages?
SolidShake@lemmy.world 4 days ago
You’re answer one answer questions with one answer. If people want more they can call.
Grimy@lemmy.world 5 days ago
Add exclamation points. I’d say no one really does nothing, just share honestly and ask the question back, even if it’s just cleaning or binging some movies.
phanto@lemmy.ca 4 days ago
I used to be a dry texter, but now I intersperse gifs of waterfalls, oceans, lakes or rivers every three or four messages. It took effort, but nobody accuses me of being dry anymore! (Also, I moisturize in the winter.)
breadsmasher@lemmy.world 5 days ago
I would presume you don’t want a conversation at all, if you sent me one word replies
