ouch! Local only has been a long term campaign for me. The last thing was my thermostat which I found out was cloud connected when my network went down. I’ve since fixed it using the ecobee local homekit integration. Great test is to manually pull the wan port and see what breaks!

This latest outage was a great test for my home assistant. Only integrations that went down were weather reporting.

I should’ve known better than to trust my intuition on this. I previously ran the numbers on investing vs double mortgage payments and found investing to be far superior.
 - Comment on Landlords are parasites 1 week ago:
I just did the math for renting/investing vs buying, including rent/house value yearly increase, income taxes on capital gains, mortgage rate, down payment amount, and initial house price. The results indicate a strong dependence on rent price and taxes/insurance for buying. I found that renting/investing can be a better financial option depending on the inputs. As another commenter pointed out, the main reasons are taxes/insurance and the greater time return rate for market vs home value. This was surprising to me, so I’m glad I ran the numbers. That tells me the real difference is your life choice of wanting a place of your own vs renting and moving around.

I’ve seen a recent finance bro fad saying renting and investing is better than owning. My brother in Christ my rent was much higher than my mortgage for a shittier spot and I didn’t get equity.

 - Comment on Why is Unraid popular in the self-hosting community ? 2 weeks ago:
For me, it was initially a jumping off point because I was more comfortable with GUIs. Now it’s a matter of convenience. I’m much better than I was with CLI, docker, etc, but I find unraid makes management easier. Proprietary doesn’t necessarily equal bad. Since it’s built on top of open source, you can pivot if they start pulling stupid shit.

Well that fucking sucks. Can someone explain how this will affect those on GrapheneOS? I’m assuming it’ll only affect play store and proxy apps, e.g. aurora store. Any other way to get around this, or anything else I’m missing?

 - Comment on Self-hosted alarm system? 3 weeks ago:
I have this exact configuration for my home and it works great. Door/window/indoor motion sensors trigger an alarm. Frigate cameras outside ping me if the alarm is active but don’t trigger it outright. I also have a panic button to trigger it. I also have it tell me what triggered the alarm and have a list of the latest events. Lastly, make sure you setup an automation to let you know when batteries die. Typically happens after a couple years.

+1 for frigate in a docker container. You can run it on a pi. If you want object/person detection (which helps a lot in alerting/notfiying), then a coral usb accelerator is also a good add on to the pi. Lastly tailscale for remote management. Camera wise I prefer amcrest, but reolink are also good. Wifi can be finicky, but will work as long as you have signal. You will still likely need a power source since battery cameras don’t last long at all.
