- Comment on heat your body, not your house -- using an infrared heat lamp 4 weeks ago:
Sorry, I don’t know much about infrared lamps so I can’t really help on that.
However I can give you some ideas on how to improve your thermal comfort for a very low budget. I don’t have any information about your situation, your home, the temperature you are reaching so it will be very vague but hopefully it can help.
Thermal Effusivity of the walls/floor
The thermal effusivity is a metric of how “cold” a material will feel. For example stone, ceramic or glass have a very high effusivity. It means that if you touch a ceramic tile at 10°C it will feel very cold, on the other hand wood, fabric, lime or earth plaster have a low effusivity, so if you touch a piece of wood at 10°C it will not feel as cold as the ceramic.
It will also impact how much the material radiates or absorbs heat, so a room covered in wood or tapestries will feel warmer than a room covered in tiles.
You can use that to your advantage by
- covering the floor with carpets
- covering the windows with thick curtains
- covering the walls with wood, wallpaper, lime/straw plaster or go very old school with tapestries.
Insulation
I’m stating the obvious but insulating your body is the most effective form of insulation. On material nothing beats wool, it will keep you warm in any condition.
Indoor you A thick wool sweater, wool gloves, wool socks, wool scarf and most importantly a wool hat ! Even if the head rarely feel cold most of the body heat is lost through the head.
All of these can be found cheaply in thrift stores, if you have a bit of money I highly recommend investing in merino wool underlayers too ! It can make a huge difference, it’s an investment but it will save money on the heating.
Then the house insulation is important, it is way more expensive but first making the house “air stream proof” will help.

From what I’ve read we are energy efficient but this is not the main reason why we are good persistent hunters.
We have two main advantages, one we can stand above the tall grass to spot our prey from afar but mainly we sweat !
We are extremely good at regulating our internal temperature in hot climates compared to other animals, this way we can just follow them until they overheat at which point they physically have to stop.
This is also why persistent hunting is practiced by tribes in the hot savanna of Africa, I have not heard about any example of persistent hunting in cold climates.

- Comment on EU grocery shoppers 'fooled' by 'maze' of food labels: audit 2 months ago:
The nutriscore is juices is a C at best, so in this case it shows that juices are not as healthy as people thought.
- Comment on EU grocery shoppers 'fooled' by 'maze' of food labels: audit 2 months ago:
You don’t need the nutriscore to compare humus to frozen pizza and I don’t think anyone is using it for that.
On the other hand it’s quite helpful to pick which pizza to buy. If one pizza is a F and another one is a B I’ll tend to go for the B. Especially if I’m shopping with kids I don’t have the time to check the label of each pizza box.
Another beneficial aspect of the nutriscore is that brands are now trying to have a good nutriscore, so now we are seeing a lot more processed food with whole wheat and lower level of sugar.
So as a whole I really think the nutriscore improved the nutritional value of what French people are eating.

- Comment on solar PV → heat pump → water heater; direct, no A/C or intermediate components. Practical? Feasible? 4 months ago:
Yes, thermal solar panels would be way more appropriate.
While trying to gain a few % through the transformation process OP is not addressing the elephant in the room: PV panels turn around 20% of the sun energy into electricity, thermal panels turn around 80% of the same energy into heat, They are way more efficient.

- Comment on No one’s ready for this: Our basic assumptions about photos capturing reality are about to go up in smoke. 5 months ago:
Yep, I think we pictures are becoming a valuable as text and it is fine, we just need to get used to it.
Before photography became mainstream the only source of information was written, it is extremely simple to make a fake story so people had to rely on trusted sources. Then for a short period of history photography became a (kinda) reliable sources of information by itself and this trust system lost its importance.
In most cases seeing a photo means that we were seeing a true reflection of what happened, especially if we were song multiple photos of the same event.
Now we are arriving at the end of this period, we cannot trust a photo by itself anymore, tampering a photo is becoming as easy as writing a fake story. This is a great opportunity for journalists I believe.

I really don’t have much knowledge on it but it sound like it’s would be an actual good application of blockchain.
Couldn’t a blockchain be used to certify that pictures are original and have not been tampered with ?
On the other hand if it was possible I’m certain someone either have already started it, it is the prefect investor magnet “Using blockchain to counter AI”

From what I see the thrusters are faulty.
Boeing said the cause is a Teflon seal bulging, they cannot identify why and when it is bulging but they say it will not happen on the way down.
Also, all the previous flights of Starliner had thruster malfunctions or shutdowns and they “fixed it” without knowing the root cause of the issue.

Applied to a real situation I’ve been through :
- my pool 4.5m wide, 9m long and 1.5m deep, the current level of salt is 2.5g/l and a bag of salt weight 20kg. How many bags of salt do I need to bring the level to 3g/l ?
- OR: my pool 14’9" wide, 29’6" long and 5’ deep, the current level of salt is 2500ppm and a bag of salt weights 40lbs. How many bags of salt do I need to bring the level to 3000ppm ?
The answer to one is 1.5 bag, the answer to the other one is “fuck that, I’m getting 8 bags at the store and it should be good enough”
