Facial recognition in smartphones is a very different thing from basically every point of view. Are you sure you don’t know a single person using an iPhone? Chances are they’ll be using FaceID to unlock their phone.
I don’t think I know a single person NOT using biometrics to unlock their smartphone.

Same in Germany.
I do believe it’s better than using iMessage for example but it’s undoubtedly rubbish.

- Comment on An earnest question about the AI/LLM hate 2 weeks ago:
I’m not part of the hate crowd but I do believe I understand at least some of it.
A fairly big issue I see with it is that people just don’t understand what it is. Too many people see it as some magical being that knows everything…
I’ve played with LLMs a lot, hosting them locally, etc., and I can’t say I find them terribly useful, but I wouldn’t hate them for what they are. There are more than enough real issues, of course, both societal and environmental.
One thing I do hate is using LLMs to generate tons of online content, though, be it comments or entire websites. That’s just not what I’m on the internet for.

I can cook, I love cooking in fact.
I can’t afford to order food every day (price is usually about 10x that of a cheap home cooked meal here) but I totally get it.
When I get home after a fucking annoying day at work, I hardly want to exist, much less exist and spend time and effort cooking dinner.
But since I’m not rich I just eat bread or cook anyway lol

I mean, there’s Scottish English (inb4 someone tells me about Glaswegian being different than $idk), American English etc, so Euro-English might be a tad broad but I’m sure it exists.
And then there’s German English which a lot of my older coworkers seem to excel at… “Ja, also, as you see, ve have here not a problem anymore, ja, and ze dropped calls are removed from this node, okeh?” (real quote from a regional manager)

I know it’s not exactly the point of the article but for a lot of things, I reckon a good amount of ‘innovation’ was pretty pointless. I personally don’t think I ever needed anything that Office 2003 can’t do… (Of course I don’t use any MS office to begin with but you get the point)

OneUI means Samsung.
Samsung means: can’t do shit in the US, limited shit outside of the US. AFAIK most custom ROMs, especially for higher end Samsung’s are OneUI based. They also make it difficult (or impossible?) to use VoLTE/VoNR with custom ROMs because of their own proprietary IMS stack

- Comment on Why I don't use AI in 2025 1 month ago:
I agree on the part that Musk sucks, OpenAI also sucks.
And yup, open source (if you can really call them that, I’d say they’re more like openly available) locally hosted LLMs are cool and have gotten pretty efficient nowadays.
My 5 year old M1 MacBook Pro runs models like Qwen3:14b at decent speeds and it’s quite capable (although I only ever use it for bullshitting lol).

I don’t think the video was bad and I’m glad desktop Linux is getting a good amount of attention this way.
But… I feel like he didn’t exactly show windows users what really expects them on Mint (which is a very similar but in many ways better and quite easy experience). This might be off putting to some unconvinced Windows users.
His Hyprland setup looks cool if you’re into that sorta thing but it’s just not what users just switching to mint, fedora, whatever might be looking for.

Well in some ways they are. It also depends a lot on the hardware you have of course. A normal 16GB GPU won’t fit huge LLMs.
The smaller ones are getting impressively good at some things but a lot of them are still struggling when using non-English languages for example.
