I know it’s a joke but this triggered something primal inside me that I cannot quite understand yet, and it’s not a fart.

Windows was eating a lot of ram even on idle, so if was planning to upgrade my ram from 16 to 32 gb, then I checked the prices and made the tactical decision to install Linux instead

Seriously my 7 year old i3 w 12gb of RAM laptop running mint feels more smooth than my new work laptop with 64gb of RAM running windows 11 (and a bunch of corporate clutter)
surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Kinda same. I couldn’t get to 11 because of the lack of a TPM. Upgrading is expensive. Linux is not.

yeah I wanted to get more space but I ultimately chose to just upgrade from 16 to 32 GB ram finally. I have a decent amount of storage already, I’m just a blooming data hoarder so I’ve had to fanagle files around

I got a 1 TB 980 Pro for $90 a couple years ago for my game and page file drive. Also Patriot 2x8 5600 also for like $80 in 2023. Very disappointing what has happened since then.

I’m a hoarder who never uninstalls Steam games even if I don’t foresee playing them again. I bought an 8TB nvme drive last summer for $545. I questioned my life choices when I bought it, but now the same drive is $1750. I feel better about my purchase.
jpaskaruk@growers.social 4 hours ago @officermike So wrong at the time, so unpredictably justified now. 🤣

I built my PC in 2024. Okay specs - 7950X3D, 2x 48GB DDR5-6400, 4090, 1+4TB Samsung 990, all watercooled. About £4k total.
Today I could sell that PC for about 10-12k. RAM was originally £300, now it's £1800 IF you can buy it. The storage also cost me around £400, today, easily £1500.
Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 3 hours ago
That’s not really a contest because i can’t afford either of those at their current prices.
tal@lemmy.today 2 hours ago I wouldn’t push either button in 2026 or 2027 if you can wait.
adarza@lemmy.ca 4 hours ago
he’s sweating cuz he knows if he pushes either one he’s gonna be eatin’ plain ramen for a month and short on rent
ChapulinColorado@lemmy.world 35 minutes ago
You mean evicted, they were already late and short on rent from the GPU financed with buy now pay later a few months ago.
DigDoug@lemmy.world 3 hours ago
The correct answer is “have bought them both 2 years ago”.

I feel bad for anyone building now. I built my gaming setup + NAS and server PC and upgraded my Steam Deck in the past 2 to 3 years. Going to get as much milage out of these as I can till things settle down.
Then in 5 years when things have only gotten worse and this is the new norm then I’ll cry alongside everyone else. Or maybe China will get their fabs up and running and swoop in to undercut these bastards to save us all.

980 Pro? Rich kid…

memory is impossible dream
Ep1cFac3pa1m@lemmy.world 4 hours ago Buy decent memory, and a cheaper SSD. Since the MoBo is backwards compatible you should be able to get a PCI-E 4.0 SSD that won’t cost as much as a 5.0, and when (if) prices finally come down you can upgrade to a better one. Since a DDR4 MoBo isn’t compatible with DDR5 RAM, you’re stuck with DDR4 until you upgrade the MoBo again.
Do you want to store things long term or short term?
