- Comment on What's a recent game you've tried playing that isn't worth the hype? 1 week ago:
Side quests are the way to go, the main campaign is not super rewarding
The worst part is that you’re forced to spend at least 1/3 of your time playing grinding out the main campaign. Then you are highly incentivised to spend another 1/3 of your time not playing due to the rest mechanic. That only leaves 1/3 of your time in game for any other tasks, including extra preparation for the main quest. Not to mention the fatigue system which often leaves you unable to do side quests when you have the opportunity.
I’m glad I didn’t get any of the classes with extra lives, to be honest.

Luigi’s Mansion 3. At least if you consider 6 years ago recent. It got some really good reviews at the time, and it honestly makes me wonder if we were playing the same game.
I only persisted with the game because it was a birthday gift (and due to the sunk cost fallacy, I suppose), but I think it might be the game I’ve completed that I enjoyed the least. It looks nice, and some of the boss ghost encounters were charming, but the gameplay itself was fairly monotonous since they simplified the ghost catching mechanics from LM1 (I didn’t really play LM2, since it was on 3DS). Gooigi would have been a decent addition, but his puzzles generally just didn’t feel very fleshed out. It felt like they were either “I need two vacuums” or “I can’t fit through this grate”.
Also, I think Nintendo took the criticism that the first game was too short well and truly to heart, because LM3 might be the most filler-stuffed game I’ve ever played. Half the time when you get an elevator button, you get screwed over in some way and have to find it again. And don’t get me started on fucking Poulterkitty, when that little bastard showed up for the second time I legitimately thought about quitting the game there and then. The final boss was awful, too, which left an even more bitter taste in my mouth.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 might be the only game I’ve ever played where I thought “Thank god I don’t have to play that anymore” once I finished it.

The worst part is, in Super Mario 3D Land, at least, if you even see the invincible leaf, it locks you out of getting all the stars on your save file. The game doesn’t even have the courtesy to tell you.

It’s really annoying when you’re dying to instant death pits so changing the difficulty wouldn’t help, though. I’m looking at you, God of War.

It’s almost like sex is a natural part of human existence and it being taboo really fucks up a lot of people.
- Comment on Are those of us who grew up on older games more attuned to latency? 2 months ago:
Unless it’s an HD one, there’s no input buffer so it’s impossible for a CRT to have more than a frame of input lag. And the console needs a frame to notice your input anyway.
- Comment on Are those of us who grew up on older games more attuned to latency? 2 months ago:
There are only a few reasons I can surmise that this would be the case:
CRTs don’t add any input lag
There’s no extra latency from being connected to the internet
There’s no latency from bluetooth/wireless on the controller
Because most older games are extremely badly optimised by today’s standards. The original Metroid slows to an absolute crawl when there’s more than about 4 sprites on the screen; the dragon boss in Mega Man (2, I think) was such a laggy, slippery mess that I gave up trying to beat the game; Ocarina of Time runs at 20FPS (worse if you’re in a PAL territory like I am), and that’s one of the better playing N64 games.
I think you’re either noticing one of these extra sources of delay, or you’re blinded by nostalgia.

Me saying “RIP” was an attempt at hyperbole. That being said, shoehorning AI into something for which a big selling point is that it’s user-made is a gigantic misstep - Maybe they’ll listen to everybody, but given that they tried it at all, I can’t see them properly backing down. Especially when it was worded as “pausing” the experiment.
- Comment on Why do people like Mario Kart? 5 months ago:
I remember when I first bought my Gamecube… I had to sign an agreement that I would never play a non-Nintendo property again. “How could they ever enforce this?” I thought. Little did I know that the next day, the Sony SWAT Team would be bursting into my house to extract my Playstation. It was absolutely terrifying.
I haven’t played a single non-Nintendo game since.

If they thought this would be well-received they wouldn’t have sprung it on people. The fact that they’re only “pausing the launch of the experiment” means they’re going to do it again once the backlash has subsided.
RIP Wikipedia, it was a fun 24 years.

- Comment on Whatever happened to cheap eReaders? – Terence Eden’s Blog 5 months ago:
Yeah, I didn’t consider that the exchange rate in 2012 was really good. With the new price and today’s exchange rate, it would be $180 NZD, which isn’t the end of the world, but feels kind of wrong because electronics generally get cheaper the longer they’re on the market.
That being said, it isn’t just Kindles. Kobos used to be ridiculously cheap, and now they’re the same price as Kindles if not more.
- Comment on Whatever happened to cheap eReaders? – Terence Eden’s Blog 5 months ago:
It’s crazy. I bought the then-current basic model Kindle for $90 NZD in 2012, which still works. I recently started looking for a new eReader with USB C and without the rubberised coating that slowly turns back into oil. The cheapest I’ve found is over $200.

Plasma Bigscreen. I’ve been looking for a similar setup to you, and it seems to tick all of the boxes, at least for me.I only learned about it recently, and I’ve been too busy to have a play with it since, but I’ll edit this post with my impressions once I get the time to have a play with it.
- Comment on Fake reviews on Play Store by Plex staff 5 months ago:
Well this thread is an absolute shitshow.
Jellyfin is great, but if you refuse to let yourself understand that Plex’s ease of setup for remote access is a point in its favour - especially when sharing with non-tech savvy people - then you’re just as bad as the supposed “Plex shills”.
Plex is well on the enshittification train, and I’ve always been a bit concerned about how private it may or may not be, but there’s absolutely no way I’d have been able to share a Jellyfin instance with my grandfather, especially as his dementia got worse.

I like what GOG do, but gating features, even niche ones, behind a subscription sounds like the first step towards enshittification.
Also, I’m sure as hell not giving them extra money until they fix their platform on Linux/Steam Deck.

What is possible is to use the bicycle to bypass smaller walls, which means that the AI is linking the two together, which is actually scary and shows, perhaps, tiny glimpses into future AGI.
I have no love for AI, but whoever wrote this article has absolutely no idea what he’s talking about. This simply isn’t a thing in the OG Pokemon games.
- Comment on One-handed games? 7 months ago:
One really handy thing with the Steam Deck is the ability to remap all of the buttons (as well as the two paddles on the back for each hand), so one could probably make a decent one-handed control setup for 99% of turn-based games. Even ones that require the use of the mouse, given the Deck’s touchpads.
Vampire Survivors requires nothing except the stick/dpad outside of menus (and I’m pretty sure you can use the touchscreen for menus, too).
If your friend(s) are stuck using the dpad, it might not be suitable, but Crypt of the Necrodancer only requires four buttons or left, right, up, and down (and you can assign buttons for the button combos normally required to do things like use bombs). This assumes that they like rhythm games.
