Freetube works great.

Hopefully content creators upload to other platforms. I’m loving my media stack between Nebula and Patreon. There are tons of good services out there.
Imagine if we started browsing the web again instead of depending on one company, one app, one algo…

Why even watch YouTube anymore? I might even do something no one would think they would do: download an offline AI slop generator. Slightly better than staring at a wall.
Joelk111@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Are you and I watching the same YouTube? People are making really cool stuff, as they always have and always will, and that stuff happens to be in YouTube right now.

Ads are getting worse, too bad, it was good while it lasted.

Honestly debatable. I’ve seen more and more good channels depart or stop posting, or others gradually turn into “react” content channels that only discuss tiktok drama or politics. Even so-called Breadtube for smaller channels has become synonymous with that embedded stereotype.
I compared a screenshot I took of my subscriptions feed from a year ago to now and was startled by the amount of change in incendiary content. It’s like the definition of doomscrolling.
I used to spend over 4 hours a day on youtube just watching video essays and skit comedy, but now I split most of that time across writing, itch.io, and catching up on anime. I have so much more free time I finally decided to start One Piece lmao (might try finishing Bleach too)

May I suggest reading a book

Thank gawd I learned how to read. Big changes are coming from the corpo nazi sector and my response will be the same. Lets tango nazis… I mean at this point google is a nazi military contractor so at some point we are going to have to detach from the titty. The world we used to know is gone… They are no longer trying to please us and this is a blessing because we need to detach from the titty. Hopefully moving on to better platforms. Youtube is a boomers website like the dusty turd website for anti social boomers that goes by the name of facebook. I hope you don’t use facebook. Anywhooo out with the old in with the new.

Youtube is a boomers website
boomers are still watching TV with channels to zap and a remote.
if a boomer is on fecesbook, that’s to look at the grandkids photos.
When was the last time you talked to a boomer?

Anyone a year older than a zoomer to them is a boomer lmfao
moonshadow@slrpnk.net 1 month ago
Everyone with cable is dead now, yt through the built-in app on a crappy smart tv is definitely ‘boomer’ activity

detatch from the titty
baatliwala@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I gave up some time back and bought Premium Lite, it’s cheap enough and I extensively watch YouTube on TV. At least the creators get a cut I guess…

For the ppl who didn’t read it properly: Its an unskippable ad feature, like we have in cable tv, but ONLY for TV audience. Don’t think it is implemented on browser based sessions.
projektilski@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 month ago
How will they be unskippable?
kunaltyagi@programming.dev 1 month ago
Server will not send you more video till you answer a survey correctly about the ad /s
ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Currently, most of the 30 sec+ ads let you skip them after 5 seconds or so. Seems like that is going away. I dont think they are injecting ads directly into videos yet, so ad block should still work

Weren’t they saying last year they will be doing that? did they delay it, or what happened?
projektilski@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 month ago
So they will be skippable :)

utopiah@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Genuinely no idea why people keep on using YouTube.
DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I only watch for shows not anywhere else. For instance, Tested, Perkins Brothers, Sabine, Louis Rossman, TechMoan, Just have a think, William Spaniel, etc.

The private yt-dlp/ffmpeg/python3 webapp I made to download YouTube videos just got 10 threads wider, and YouTube is gonna pay for it
sonofearth@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Share it dude!!!

I built it mostly for my mum and dad so that dad could download MP3 music and mum could download her sewing videos and play them in VLC.
Thing is, the domain is registered to me, hosted on my own metal, and run in my own house. I don’t really think I’m smart enough to fully secure and obfuscate my site, but also not dumb enough to let the public go ham on it while exposing myself to legal action from one of the most powerful companies on earth.
If I get time soon, I’ll try to spin up a clone with some layers of protection and anonymity, and share that.

I know this is a joke but you can get more throughput with async I/O for this use case. It lacks a good punchline though
