I must’ve been desensitized at the age of 10 because that scene didn’t faze me much. The whole movie was friggin weird. I’m a girl. I think boys liked that movie more than girls did.

I saw the movie for the first time when I was 5, and I mostly loved except that this scene was extremely traumatic for me. I’m also a girl.
I hadn’t really considered that there might be a gender divide over this film, but it does make sense that boys would identify more with a male protagonist. I’m an elementary teacher, and I do see that kids are more likely to engage with stories that have protagonists of their same gender.
