Don’t confuse it with Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Copilot app ! 😂

Glad to see some manager making 6 figures “did something”.

If it’s true, it seems like a crazy idea. Whether you like office or not, it’s a known brand and people have been using it for a long time. Throwing away that name recognition has to be a bad idea, especially as many people are increasingly resentful at having AI shit forced down their throats.
Passerby6497@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Where do you see that it isn’t true? Clicking through to the MicroSlop site, it looks like it confirms this as true:
The Microsoft 365 Copilot app (formerly Office) lets you create, share, and collaborate all in one place with your favorite apps now including Copilot.*
Is this just a wording fail and the app is changing, not the product line?
If so, still not even the most confusing rebrand in recent memory.

Throwing away that name recognition has to be a bad idea
Imagine if someone took a well known brand like Tumblr and renamed it to something stupid like “Q”
turbulentMagma@lemmy.zip 2 days ago
“Jerry, could you come into my 365 copilot?” - some boss at Microsoft probably.
Nalivai@lemmy.world 2 days ago
- also Jerry’s wife.

This renaming happened for the Office app a while back, but now they’ve applied it to Office itself? It is April 1st already?
LNRDrone@sopuli.xyz 4 days ago
Yeah the online 365 office was branded with Copilot BS sometime last summer I think. Also logging in to the online office throws you to the copilot prompt by default. Even before this the online version of office was getting so bad that it was not worth using anymore. I’ve been using LibreOffice for 3+ years now, but every now and then I gave to access a sheet it something with a different PC and still run into this office garbage.
snooggums@piefed.world 4 days ago
On my phone trying to log jnto office.com would give me a splash page to install the copilot app with no option to just use Outlook. Found out if you go directly to the app subdomain (outlook.office365.com) you could log in normally through the browser. Computer didn’t prompt for the copilot app of course, just the phone.
Wonder if that option will go away now. If so, I won’t be checking for scheduled meetings on my phone anymore.

It’s like when they renamed their Remote Desktop app to “The Windows App”. Like wtf?
DylanMc6@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 days ago
I prefer LibreOffice - if you’re still using Windows 10 with Linux, switch to LibreOffice!
THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Right after I learn about how much of a failure Copilot has been, and they do this. I’m not surprised, but man.

I can make LibreOffice Writer look like word 2007 🤗

I actually prefer the ribbon layout. But I actually only really started using Word when this was the interface

Microsoft has like 15 words they just keep rearranging for all their products, kinda like what taco bell did for “mexican” food.
golden_zealot@lemmy.ml 3 days ago
I remember working IT, and every other week there was some announcement that looked like this:
Microsoft Pro Plus for Office is now Office 365 plus for Business Office 365 Office Pro is now Microsoft Office Pro Plus Office Dynamics 365 for Business is now Office for Business Pro Microsoft Windows Home Office 365 is now Windows 365 Home Plus
How anyone still manages that fucking licensing is beyond me.

Remember how many things got the name Exchange or Outlook back in the day?
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 days ago
they got the idea from how often HBO renames thier service.
FosterMolasses@leminal.space 3 days ago
Their marketing department is straight up paranoid with nothing to do lol

Don’t disrespect Taco Bell by comparing them to this shit company.

Microsoft: We can’t find anyone who likes Copilot.
Also Microsoft: Let’s rebrand our only well-received products as Copilot.
mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 days ago
well-received is a stretch. more like less-hated.
rumba@lemmy.zip 3 days ago
YMMV; my C-staff have all yearned for the office platform since we transitioned to Google Workspace.
I’d be happy to walk to an open solution, but the integration for mobile and high levels of interoperability with other companies leaves me stuck with Gdocs or o365
ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 2 days ago
I have had open office installed on my computer since 2008. While back then word wasn’t complete shit I was still using it for many years. But now there is nothing Libre office has that word doesn’t so fuck MS office.
grte@lemmy.ca 4 days ago
Wasn’t there a report a week or two back saying that they cut their internal sales targets by 50% because no one was using copilot? They must be desperate.
DV8@lemmy.world 4 days ago
They are desperate. I literally had a sales person reach out to ask how she could help us use copilot more because they can see literally nobody is using it despite a limited amount of usage is included in our M365 business standard licences. This after me already making a ticket to stop the behaviour of the home page automatically loading the copilot page instead of the classic home page with the overview I want to land on.
cley_faye@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Hahaha… good joke, but people already did it.
…it’s a joke, right?

_edge@discuss.tchncs.de 3 days ago
This may be the strategy. 90% of all business users use copilot daily (after we renamed their coffeemachine and the kitchen sink to copilot)

My kid destroyed my newish laptop and I could only pluck the memory off it to salvage something. So I am back to surfing and doing office projects on my old Alienware Aurora R4 from 2011 running Windows 7. No more gaming for me but also, no need for office products for now and the foreseeable future. Today it would cost me almost double to replace the laptop he destroyed with how much my memory and graphics card would cost. I am so happy that when my Office 360 is up in March I can tell them to fuck off. I am not now nor will ever be a fan of having to pay you over $100 a year so I can open a Word Doc or an old Excel spreadsheet. I am using the web-mail version of my email so I no longer need your Outlook, either.
And… since I have been hanging out on Lemmy I have seen way too many posts about Linux and gaming to ever think I will buy a windows product again. I miss not playing my Flight Sim and games like Madden but I will never upgrade this OS on this old beast.
Like others I am looking forward to the day when I can build my new computer and install Linux on it and enjoy gaming again.
NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 2 days ago
What I’m about to tell you might shock you, as it doesn’t get brought up hardly at all, ever, but… linux.
optissima@lemmy.ml 2 days ago
Try Linux out on the old laptop, you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised how much gaming it can handle.
Zink@programming.dev 2 days ago
Your use case sounds perfect for using LibreOffice as a drop-in replacement. Opening a Word doc or an old Excel spreadsheet is effortless. You don’t sound like the “I use Excel every day for my job and there is no replacement” folks with very specific needs.
And I will echo what the other reply said: try Linux on your laptop! Not only will it probably work fine, it will probably also feel much faster and more responsive.
Trying most of the big Linux distros is super easy and zero commtment, too. When you boot from the install media, it loads directly into the OS desktop running natively on your hardware! Then once you’re ready to install it, there’s usually a shortcut on the desktop or something.
I recommend trying Linux Mint. It is so simple to install and full featured out of the box, plus being based on ubuntu and being very popular itself, information and help is everywhere.

They really have a massive talent. It’s not easy to have such a consistent record in choosing stupid and confusing names, rebranding stuff with no reason.

No no its like microplastics its everywhere.

I think it’s time to make a serious push into getting people to boycott Microsoft along with OpenAI. Windows is becoming a bloated surveillance operating system and Office 365 is raising their prices and adding an AI feature based on OpenAI’s LLMs. OpenAI donated $25 million to Trump.
