I can’t believe that I understood this joke. I honestly can’t even really remember when to use natural logs…
Took me a moment

Mathematicians just write log~e~ as log tbh (because log~10~ is irrelevant)
jadelord@discuss.tchncs.de 15 hours ago
You mean programmers. Real mathematicians™ write it as ln.

Did the subtitle transcriber think that “In” is a name or something? Why is the “I” capitalized?
psycotica0@lemmy.ca 1 day ago
Unsure if… fuck it I’ll just blow it open.
The context is that log~e~ has a shortcut called “ln”, that is L N, said lawn, for “natural logarithm” (but not in English)
And so the joke is that “ln” looks like “in” in this context.
minkymunkey_7_7@lemmy.world 1 day ago
So this is really a font joke, stupid fonts that make the I and l look the same.
I always set my defaults to Tahoma for this reason.
LodeMike@lemmy.today 1 day ago
Yes I know the joke. I was just pointing out that the “I” in “in” seems to be capitolized for no reason.

In several mathematical notation systems, the most important being APL/J, programming languages inspired to codify “tools of thought” notation as code, the log function is ln. 10&log is base 10 log.

Its probably edited. The dialogue is real though.

Side note, this reminded me that 3blue1brown just started a series on the Laplace Transform if you’re into the further antics of e.

Second thing is Euler’s Product Formula, which is just amazing in it’s definition.
Zeta(s) = Product(over all prime numbers) [ 1 / 1 - p^-s^ ]
That “over all prime numbers” part gets me every time, and yet the statement is provably true

Why am I subbed to this? I get like n-5% of the jokes.

I almost get this one, but I’m not sure why LOGe would be In
Just don’t speak enough maths lol
felsiq@piefed.zip 2 days ago
ln is just shorthand for the natural logarithm, which is log base e. In case it’s not clear from the picture, it’s written LN (but lowercase) in math
danc4498@lemmy.world 1 day ago
You son of a bitch I’m Ln. got it! I can laugh now

I’ll settle for things writing log~e~ instead of writing log when the assumption is that log means log~10~…
