I mean, setting aside the lack of actual evidence so far, what effect will it have on most of us? Is the world suddenly going to become a utopia because aliens have been here? At best we get some cool technology that governments and the rich will hoard; at worst we get conscripted to go kill them and take their shit, or are forced to defend ourselves from them trying to take our shit. I’ve never really understood why aliens imply anything other than that. The truth is, if they do have something truly transcendent to teach us, we ain’t ready for it. If we want to find the secrets of the universe we need to put our own house in order and do it ourselves. Aliens aren’t our space saviors.
peanut_boy@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Why does everything need to have personal gain to matter at all. I get the whole “no actual evidence” part. But if we actually see aliens and you’re not impressed, I don’t think we can be friends. Don’t blame capitalism, you’re just lame. Sure, there are real problems, but people throughout history have had it far worse and still managed to care about things outside of their own tiny microcosm. Many people enjoy these things not in spite of but because of their personal struggles, as they can act as an escape for a short time. If you’re going to have economic troubles anyway, why spend all your time dwelling in it?
BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I don’t think that person is talking about their personal thoughts, but more mankind as a whole.
As we operate now we would not have to tools to add anything meaningful to a galactic conversation.
We could all personally think it’s awesome, but as a people we are simply unequipped to deal with the consequences of meeting an extraterrestrial race.
People are sort of great individually, but collectively we’re horrific. We’d be trying to kill, enslave, or exploit any new species we came across. It’s what we do with new species. Hell it’s what we do to each other.
demlet@lemmy.world 1 year ago
True, it would be amazing. I’m just ambivalent about the long-term impact. Like, would much really change ultimately? I guess we’ve never experienced another species we could directly communicate ideas with. Maybe it would be more revolutionary than I can imagine.
ihwip@lemmy.world 1 year ago
The fact that they haven’t made contact with the entire globe in a way that is undisputable etc is proof that they are mostly apathetic.
This is why they mostly stick to military bases with nukes. Even their offensive technology is apathetic. Disrupting our electronics etc. They clearly don’t care.
With that said should we really call them aliens? Chances are they have been here longer than the entire history of the hominid line.
demlet@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Or maybe proof that, you know, they aren’t here and never were…

I keep hoping they’ll imprison us and keep me as their pet. I’d prefer that life.

Religions would have to wreckon with a lot of their foundations…
Phen@lemmy.eco.br 1 year ago
“have to” is a bit strong. Religions ignore inconvenient truths about the world all the time. If aliens were confirmed to exist it wouldn’t be different. >
bumblychicken@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
Would they though? I feel like the biggest ones would accommodate this revelation. “Yes, extraterrestrials exist but WE are God’s chosen species” Same reason a lot of animals don’t get into heaven lol

Can we please keep all of the alien nonsense off of lemmy? I don’t need conspiracy theories on my favorite platform. Even though aliens are the OG conspiracy theories and Mulder made them look real cool.
FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 1 year ago
At least it’s the fun conspiracies instead of the nation destroying ones.

Can we please keep anything I don’t like or agree with it off of lemmy?
That includes: boiled eggs, boiled spinach, and anyone with a number in their user name.
Thank you everyone!

Big difference between some dudes testimony and hard irrifutable evidence. Some officials can say whatever they like, until you get hard xcom level evidence in front of a public hearing the government hasn’t confirmed shit.
The real reason ayylmaos will never be confirmed is a huge majority of the global population ascribe to a religion incomparable with the existence of extraterrestrial life. The moment it would be confirmed there would be mass panics by religious fundamentalist that space is inhabited by demons or whatever.
Nahvi@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Meh… I would bet most Christians ascribe to the same sort of philosophy that my pastor did back when I was in high school. He always said, “I don’t know if there are aliens out there, but if there are they need Jesus too.”
It’s a bit silly, but he was also a creationist. If he can be fine with aliens but not evolution, I imagine the same is true for most other religious people.
duh@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I don’t understand why people think religious people will go bananas if aliens are confirmed. There will be unrest at the beginning, sure, and probably more than one dangerous alien based cult will rise. But most of the religious leaders will just adjust their narratives and try to retain as many followers as possible. And most followers will be eager to take explanations and not challenge their core beliefs. If I remember correctly, the Catholic church said they are not opposed to the idea of intelligent life and civilizations outside earth, so it seems like they are somehow prepared.
I think most religious leaders are smart enough not to rush to the “aliens are demons” conclusion, specially if they are proven not to be hostile (I assume they are not if the government are dealing with them).
WereBearGareBear@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Hmmm, I’d argue the idea of God is anything but ‘terrestrial’, maybe even bordering on ‘extra-terrestrial’?

aliens
gowan@reddthat.com 1 year ago
Are you aware that the overwhelming majority of Christians are taught to not take the Bible literally? Seriously from day one the Roman Catholic Church has held that position because that’s the exact same position the majority of rabbis at the time held about the Hebrew texts. Christianity could easily account for other life but most of Islam takes the Quran literally as Muhammed is supposed to have “fixed the mistakes” of the older texts. Simply put The Vatican wouldn’t need to do much to account for aliens.
Smokeydope@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I said ‘Fundimentalist’ as in people taught to legitimately believe everything in the bible/scripture is to be taken literally and everything that is evidence against the stories being true is actually lies and deceptions of the devils doing. Perhaps fundamentalist is technically the wrong word for them but thats whst comes to my mind.
I have spoken to enough Christians to know that there exist both rational people willing to accept their scripture may have some symbolic metaphor and I’ve spoken to batshit insane zelots who warp their subjective reality to match whatever they are told to believe and reject all evidence otherwise. I’ve encountered the latter more often than you might like to think. Even if they are not the majority there is enough of them to do serious damage. I would be interested to see some statistical numbers based on polls if you have the sauce on that.
InternetTubes@lemmy.world 1 year ago
They just confirmed that Unidentified Flying Objects and Top Secret classifications were real, and made a whole bunch of speculations about what were probably quick dried corpses that bulged where the bones and evaporating liquids would have made them bulge that were collected from experimental high altitude tests that distracted a whole bunch of people and actual wild goose chases.
Ibaudia@lemmy.world 1 year ago
“the government” lol. It was like one guy who just said it with 0 evidence.
djmarcone@lemmy.world 1 year ago
The US government has near zero credibility. I dgaf what they say wrt aliens.
It may just be a distraction but could be a psyop by the cia for some convoluted reason.
They do seem to be earnestly playing the alien card right now and aren’t letting it up.
That tells me that there will be escalation on this with some end goal in mind. And it will likely be another pain in the ass like their last one.
dopeshark@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Let’s ask those aliens for affordable homes :)

UnculturedSwine@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Someone with government connections is claiming things that he can’t back up with evidence. Nobody cares because “the government” didn’t confirm shit. Even the guy making the claim said he couldn’t talk about it because it’s classified.

Audit the military : find the aliens
Froyn@kbin.social 1 year ago
I believe the lack of charges for lying to Congress does lend a little credibility to the story he tells.
sarsaparilyptus@midwest.social 1 year ago
Fuck all, just more rumors and innuendo from some jackass that won’t back it up
creditCrazy@lemmy.world 1 year ago
The reason why I personally don’t care is because the USA has a history of conferming the existence of aliens when someone sees something they shouldn’t have
EndlessApollo@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Funny how all the “skeptics” here have to straight up act like the tic tac doesn’t exist. Yea a lot of the claims there were backed up by non existent/classified stuff that couldn’t be revealed publicly, but there’s no human explanation for the way that thing flew
Meowoem@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
The two ship based lasers making plasma where they intersect is a very sensible explanation and it’s a project the navy were likely testing during the exercise where the tiktak was filmed, I don’t know why people pretend it doesn’t exist.
EndlessApollo@lemmy.world 1 year ago
So they were just putting on a cool light show and won’t even bother to confirm that’s what happened? And even if that can create a similar looking phenomenon, why would they be doing that? The sky is huge, the chances of those lasers intersecting long enough to create that effect for that long are slim to none imo, unless there was a reason for them to be doing that

If aliens visited earth the government (US or otherwise) wouldn’t be able to hide it

~the government just confirmed aliens are real~ another hack job with government connections is claiming that he was told by government official that alien “biologics” and space craft were recovered by the government without being able to provide evidence or details because it is “classified”
What a nothingburger
reverendsteveii@lemm.ee 1 year ago
he didn’t even say alien. “alien biologics” while meaningless, was a stronger assertion than he was willing to make. he said “non-human biologics”, which could mean anything from aliens to there was some grass there. he just left it vague and then people like OP who want the truth but also know exactly what they want the truth to be filled in the details using the twin powers of guessing and lying.

Except his documents were all routed through the Intel Community Inspector General who sent them to congress calling them “urgent and credible.”
And his lawyers are former Inspector Generals.
You say this just because he didnt post things to wikileaks and defect to russia.

Do you have some sources? Every time I’ve tried to look into it, I get garbage articles and no real information.
TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 1 year ago
He’s also clearly operating in such a way that this doesn’t get buried. People dismissing this lack an understanding of how things work in large bureaucracies/ have a fantasy version of how they think the world should work.
So much has come out already, but only for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear.
captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yeah this claim is extraordinary and requires evidence equally so
