Don’t ignore the gender bias
Warren Farrell has been warning the world for 20 years that neglecting and marginalising young men is going to result in generations of angry men who have checked out of society and will turn to criminality. By every available metric from suicide to educational outcomes, boys and young men are suffering enormously. Drowning people do terrible things. Lashing out at society in the ballot box is going to be the least of our issues soon.
Despite this, I predict society will continue to blame them for their failures, marginalise them, mock them, and pretend that they’re privileged. This is going to get worse until people are ready to have a serious society-wide discussion about how we can help young men succeed in the modern world.
I think it’s funny how if you ignore the needs and wants of young men, you get an increase in angry criminals that drag society down. But if you ignore the needs and wants of young women, you get business as usual. Thats why so many men resist women speaking up. They think it takes their voice away; they don’t want to be treated like women, so they rebel. We need a new status quo that treats us as equals. Don’t shame young men, but people need to be teaching them to be better too.
I don’t think framing their issues in terms of women’s issues is helpful. “But what about men” is just a unhelpful when dealing with issues for women. Feminism did great things to advance the interests of women, and it required coordination and struggle over many decades against a system which wasn’t receptive to their needs. Now, each year, the U.S. spends close to $8B on women’s initiatives spanning many areas from healthcare to education. If you’re suggesting men need their own movement, perhaps you’re right. Perhaps what we’re seeing is the early formation of that. Messy, uncoordinated, and immature, as are all early movements.
In the mean time, I don’t think “be better” is a resonant message. It was rightly dismissed when people said it to women in the 1960s and it should be dismissed now. These issues are structural and require structural solutions. I think a big part of this is economic. Men are taught from a young age (by men and women) that unless they make a lot of money, they’re worthless. Society is offering fewer and fewer opportunities for men in traditionally blue collar industries to thrive. If we offer few opportunities and call them worthless for not succeeding, this is a recipe for societal instability.
The two genders are equal, but still different. There are things to celebrate in each, and also conversations you’d want to hold in private with either group about the best way to look to their future.
I agree that we need men to stop seeing “women’s voices” as an attack though. I think it comes up because young white men see hundreds of support groups and slogans that champion every other minority, and will never once mention them. Even if the argument is they’re not “threatened” in a way they deserve it, and even if members of their demographic basically rule the world, the feeling of exclusion for them as individuals is real.
Like this isn’t by design?? Young men are swinging so hard because they are most eagerly vulnerable to manipulation. It isn’t happening by accident, a quirk of circumstances or unintentional neglect.
I don’t think young men are genetically predisposed to this. They are the product of the society in which they grow up. They’re seeking help because no one else is there to help.

I will never understand why the left engages people with this rhetoric. NO ONE wants to have an abortion. We are not fighting for your right to abort.
This is about your right to privacy, your right to receive adequate medical care, as well as proper sexual education regarding contraception.
Liberal areas with proper sex ed classes and adequate access to medical care for women have drastically lower abortion rates than conservative areas.
Well, good thing they won’t be the ones getting the abortions. Imagine if someone tried to tell them what they could and couldn’t do with their bodies, that would be so crazy.

These numbers are so sad. Based on the numbers their fathers probably supported it. I wonder if this a repercussions of more progressive men not breeding as much and raising sons not to be douches.
I think it’s more just abandoning a generation of young men to be raised by the Internet while nobody’s watching and not giving a shit when there are concerted efforts to tell boys they’re worthless and ugly and will never get girlfriends to sell them scam products and harmful ideologies that supposedly offer a way out. Instead, these boys were yelled at and told how worthless and ugly they are for thinking these things, and how they’ll never get girlfriends, just feeding into all of the right wing lies. The far right has spent most of the past two decades trying to create this false problem for young men so they could sell a solution to it, and nobody was paying attention. I remember seeing the beginnings of this shit in the early 2010s and being disturbed at the harmful things being aimed at me as a teen boy and it’s just way worse now as kids are online and overstimulated 24/7.
Fuck these other men.

My (ex) best friend from childhood is now 39, single, has a kid, and is an incel who blames all his problems on women. And I mean literally: he can’t keep a job because of women. He even lost his truck driver gig because of women! Not that he ever explained it, just complained that everything was caused by women.
We don’t talk anymore.

Everything is a joke or entertainment now so you can have insane political beliefs “for the lols” that end up becoming their real opinions, and if you try to challenge them “you’re taking it too seriously/it’s just a joke/it’s not that deep”
