Non-fediverse social media is designed to be addictive because that’s how the people running it make money.

mienshao@lemmy.world 3 days agoI think this every single time I see news about that website. Like what the fuck is possibly on there that justifies using that piece of shit platform? Insanity.

What do you mean non-fediverse? How does Federation affect addictiveness?
dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 2 days ago
That’s easy. It’s more dull here, and there’s less lock-in.
No, really. Social media without the dopamine-pump-style algorithm behind it is far less stimulating. Meanwhile, the Federation model itself allows us to abandon nodes that are co-opted by bad actors. So there’s always somewhere else to go with all your favorite stuff when things go sour.

Algorithmically curated timelines are designed to be addictive. Fediverse doesn’t have that, it’s time based, like it used to be before.
LastYearsIrritant@sopuli.xyz 3 days ago
It CAN be time based, but there’s also a “hot” and an “active” sorting. Both of which are “algorithms”.
It’s a lot more simple of an algorithm, and doesn’t intentionally push specific topics, but if you open lemmy.world anonymously, you’ll see a default “All/Active” feed which is sorted by engagement.
lazyViking@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Oh ok, sorry. I wasn’t aware that the fediverse restricted algorithms
jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 days ago
I am also addicted to the fediverse.
AoxoMoxoA@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Freebasing that fedi
lazyViking@lemmy.world 3 days ago
I guess for me the stench of the people are counteracting the near heroin addictiveness of the fediverse

You can mimic the feel of Twitter by taking reddit threads and cutting them at the most popular reply (Reddit already does this), and then reversing the order. Now the “best” content is front and center and the conversation / context is in the background. Users don’t have to go through the tediousness of a discussion before experiencing the sheer joy of a witty response. The emotions come faster and more consistently.
Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 3 days ago
People use it for the same reason they use Truth Social.
Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 2 days ago
There’s just a lot less activity on the alternatives. Especially if you’re trying to follow niche interests.
Obviously, I left, but I get how barren it can feel when the latest post about a hobby of yours is 3 days old, instead of 3 minutes.
CluckN@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Unfortunately I think people don’t care how the sausage is made. It has porn and
racistedgy memes so they’ll keep coming back.Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 days ago
half of the users are probably porn OF accounts, i wonder if any of them actually divested from x. we know meta doesnt allow porn of any kind.

People. Lots of people. Including Doctor Cory Doctorow and Molly White.
a_wild_mimic_appears@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 days ago
Cory Doctorow is on mastodon, just like Molly White
Ulrich@feddit.org 2 days ago
Yes and they’re also on Xitter
a_wild_mimic_appears@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 days ago
and we are talking about reasons why people are still there - those two aren’t one, because you can read their posts somewhere else too. Except if you meant that people are still there because those two are still there.

This sketch was about Facebook but it’s also relevant to Twitter
TheFogan@programming.dev 3 days ago
Actually more relevant now, considering the ending
“Go to the site where Nazi’s scream at you”. It’s talking about moving from facebook to twitter.
humanspiral@lemmy.ca 3 days ago
Well the punchline to that sketch is “instead of FB, just do what I do: Go to the site where nazis scream at you!” just might be that twitter reference you said was missing.
VeganCheesecake@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 days ago
That was painful.
