Mac - best laptop Linux - best server/programmer workstation Windows - best gaming machine
It’s been like that for years
I do ML stuff on my Mac that even the most expensive RTX 4090 could dream of being able to do, because of a buttload of shared memory
As a developer I’ve been missing most of my tools on Linux, and the OS is just catching up.
Friendly remember that macOS is a Unix system that can run any Linux software, meaning that anything done on Linux can be done on macOS.
Proton makes Linux a perfectly fine gaming platform, with sometimes even better performance on Proton than native Windows…
Anyway Windows sucks, that we can agree on
macOS isn’t Unix and doesn’t contain Unix code. It was based on FreeBSD which is “Unix-like” but has moved further and further away from that.
macOS also can’t just run all Linux applications. That’s nonsense. It doesn’t use the Linux kernel or its APIs and ABIs.
I am interested in what tools are missing on Linux that exist on macOS?
macOS is a Unix system that can run any Linux software
Not quite, but they are very similar.
It’s unclear what you’re trying to explain
Do you mean subtraction by “-“?
yeah you are right it was a mess now it’s improved
Isn’t this true for all Windows versions?
Windows 7 and 10 were decent enough after a clean install. Windows 11 doesn’t necessarily feel sluggish but with all the stuff Microsoft blasts at you it doesn’t feel like you’re getting anything done.
It’s like the operative system is constantly fighting you and doesn’t want to get out of the way.
I heard that Windows 7 is very lightweight
I don’t have many complaints when it comes to Windows 10. About the only thing I really have an issue with is the damn notification center, but apparently not enough of a problem to do anything about it.
Just waiting for Asahi Linux to get Bluetooth working and I can finally use Fedora on my M2 Air all my other computers run Linux. Dropped Windows over 15 years ago it was bad then and it just keeps getting worse every update.
The feature support page shows Bluetooth as working in the M2 Airs. Is there a particular feature or compatibility issue that you’re waiting on?
My bad I mean microphone 🎤
How is Asahi support on M1 Air, I’m thinking about getting a refurbished device for running asahi as daily drive
It runs great just no steam for games because no arm64 support but runs really good.
Was that when windows 8 came or was that later? I dont exactly remmeber the year but at least windows 7 was still pretty good.
It was windows 7 but my install got screwed up Some how not sure how a freind gave me a Ubuntu USB and I didn’t want you try it I wanted to reinstall windows but didn’t have another windows computer at the time or acces to one. And I installed Ubuntu 8.Something and back then making a Windows USB wasnt easy like it is now on Linux and never for it working so I just embraced Linux glad I did prepared me for my Dev ops career.
A fresh install has made windows 11 fine on my midrange PC.
The start menu drops my frame rate down to under 60hz which is weird.
I believe it to be a sort of indexer that has to scan the content of the PC each time it's opened in order to pull something in front fast. So the more there is, the longer it takes.
Who runs windows with only 128 GB of memory?
Like RAM? That’s more than usual, even the most powerful computers usually have 64GB RAM.
Is it still stupidly difficult to change default browser in win11?
I read somewhere around the time of w11 release that you have to tweak registry keys or something like that?
No, and it never has been. I use Firefox as my default and it has never changed.
Oh, I see. Must’ve misremembered that, then…
In the follow-up post, Young emphasized that he loves Windows
lol
I recently wiped my Nitro5 of Windows 11 and now I’m currently using Kubuntu while waiting for the Fedora 40 release. I think I’m going to try the Plasma spin, (Fedora always seems to end badly for me though).
I was reasonably satisfied with Win11 when I first upgraded to it. It ran smoothly and was easy to setup the way I wanted it. It basically stayed pretty much out of my way. But the last “upgrade” put an end to that. I wrestled with the last service pack, and got pissed and wiped it.
Now I’m just waiting for Fedora 40 to drop along with Ubuntu 24.04LS. I will pick a KDE spin that seems to run the best.
Nitro5 sibling! I just used the Microsoft reinstall method of making my system factory fresh. Thinking of going with Debian with X and Xfce. I don’t know why MS took away the ability to have a system bar at the top of the screen for Win11 but I was able to kludge it to the top but ran into so many issues that I finally did the factory reset.
I’m also thinking about doing dual boot but I’ve read that MS doesn’t play nice anymore in that scenario. Last time I dual booted was the XP days. Is there a reason you didn’t dual boot?
Windows is shit, but 11 is not shittier than 10…
If you’re talking about the user interface, I agree.
Windows 11 is bloated with ads and telemetry.
Firstly to all the members of the peanut gallery, Linux sucks donkey cock.
Now with that out of the way, secondly, Windows 11 has noticeable lag just before os, and security updates, which is a drag.
Lastly, it WAS snappier out of the box on release, but after subsequent updates, and inserts like every new fangled version of teams, edge, and now copilot, they're starting to swamp the OS, and that's gonna be disastrous in the long term.
Skill issue lol
I didn’t see any difference on my 2in1 ThinkPad, performance was about the same, although Windows 11 UI felt snappier.
Windows 11 ams for the Dutch.
