Browse something like r/nofap. If that is a joke, a lot of those commentators have a Leslie Nielsen level straight face.
inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Nofap is honestly reaching cult like status.
AdmiralShat@programming.dev 10 months ago
r/NoFap is unironically just a bunch of undiagnosed ADHDs realizing what happens when you stop relying on constantly flooding your brain with dopamine as a default
Sasha@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 months ago
I know someone who religiously follows it, because he constantly discloses when he’s doing it (all the time). It’s very real
T156@lemmy.world 10 months ago
It might have started off that way, but it could easily go out of control and become a genuine movement.
Flat Earth originally started as a joke arguing for something silly and easily disproven, and look at how that’s gone.
gaifux@lemmy.world 10 months ago
So you still think you live on a magic twirling space ball or what?
JustZ@lemmy.world 10 months ago
As I understand flat earth is a religious thing.
theworstshepard@lemmynsfw.com 10 months ago
Looks flat to me 😮 You saying it’s not?
popemichael@lemmy.sdf.org 10 months ago
I believe that a lot of issues lile this would be solved with legalized sex work and the destigmaization of mental health treatments.
nucleative@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Anecdotally everyone has an anecdote about this topic because it concerns a basic function of the human body. It’s too bad that so many people believe it’s a moral character problem making the topic nearly impossible to talk about openly.
richieadler@lemmy.myserv.one 10 months ago
Another case of religion poisoning everything.

A 30m “No Fap” NPR piece was definitely not on my 2024 bingo card.

I am not sufficiently qualified to comment on this particular sociocultural trends nor can I give medical recommendations. However, some may want to inform themselves by evaluating the current status of relevant research. A number of studies have found that greater ejaculation frequency is associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer.
One such research in question :
dullbananas@lemmy.ca 10 months ago
The difference is very small, and the line for 0-3 ejaculations per month being at the middle instead of the bottom is kinda sus
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5040619/
Also, based on the “Results and limitations” summary, the increased prostate cancer risk might also be from high body mass index, sexually transmitted infections, and/or alcohol consumption
Brcht@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Also I see an issue with the correlation vs causation: healthier people probably masturbate more often, on average
Sorgan71@lemmy.world 10 months ago
For old people yeah, but for young people it increases the risk for prostate cancer. One group does it too little, the other does it too much.
kWazt@lemmy.world 10 months ago
You may want to add a source or 2 to your reply, you know, same as the person you replied to did. Otherwise, people may draw the conclusion that you’re not a valuable source yourself.
Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 10 months ago
I don’t think masturbation itself is the issue and perhaps not porn either but I think there’s still a kernel of truth to this. There are some people like me to whom it really is an issue. The way my brain works is that 1 hour of masturbation is twice as good as 30 minutes and then obviously 2 hours is twice as good as 1 hour and then it’s 4am and I must force myself to stop or I’m not sleeping at all. It’s a button I can press that makes me feel good and unless you take it away from me I’m not going to stop pressing it. Masturbation alone isn’t exciting enough for it to get out of hand like this but when you combine it with porn then some people simply get sucked in.
I’ve heard interesting theories about how in the past frustrated men like me would take out to the streets and express their frustration by breaking windows and kicking grannies but despite the record numbers of “us” now we’re still not seeing this in the world. Atleast not to the scale you’d expect. Where are those men? Well in their mothers basements playing games, smoking weed and jerking off to porn. It’s not what we wanted but it’s “fine” - could be worse.
xePBMg9@lemmynsfw.com 10 months ago
How can you just keep going? Do you not come or do you not have a refractory period?
Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 10 months ago
Edging. I just wont push myself over the point of no return untill I choose to.

No, indeed it’s not…
Rolder@reddthat.com 10 months ago
I feel like the real difference is that, in the past, prostitution was a bit more common, so men could just get their kicks with a woman rather then with their hand.
Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 10 months ago
Prostitution is not free. Even if it was more widely available it still wouldn’t be much of a help for unemployed men. Also why bother when porn and masturbation is free and enough to take the edge off? People are willingly opting out of the dating market aswell because it’s just not worth the trouble when the alternative doesn’t even require you to leave your home.
_number8_@lemmy.world 11 months ago
pretty sure the benefits people feel are simply from a) being hornier and b) positive self-reinforcement for setting a goal and sticking to it
if we weren’t meant to jerk off why does it feel good
thantik@lemmy.world 11 months ago
if we weren’t meant to jerk off why does it feel good
Because it’s an analog to the thing that it is meant to feel like - sex.
Sex being the method of reproduction, if we didn’t enjoy it as a species, we wouldn’t be here today.
protist@mander.xyz 11 months ago
There are so many more layers though…exploring your own sexuality on your own can make you more comfortable and confident in your sexuality and in turn make you more likely to successfully reproduce, for one
richieadler@lemmy.myserv.one 10 months ago
Sex being the method of reproduction, if we didn’t enjoy it as a species, we wouldn’t be here today.
There are species with painful sex mechanisms, so that bit at least is dubious.

This is the best summary I could come up with:
But many researchers and sex therapists worry that the online communities that have formed in response to these fears often endorse inaccurate medical information, exacerbate mental health problems and, in some cases, overlap with extremist and hate groups.
While he was neither a medical doctor nor a Ph.D. scientist (he was an adjunct biology instructor at Southern Oregon University for a combined four months in 2005 and 2010), he had given a viral TEDx talk arguing that internet porn is a hazard for men’s brains.
NoFap’s message today is strongly aligned with Wilson’s arguments that watching porn is addictive, causes conditions such as erectile dysfunction and brain fog, and can even involuntarily change one’s sexual desires.
Within a few years, major media outlets were running profiles of Rhodes and his touted approach to pornography addiction, including The New York Times, CNN, the BBC and NPR’s Here & Now, co-produced with Boston member station WBUR.
Those who agreed to be quoted all asked NPR not to use their last names in order for them to discuss their intimate sexual histories without fear of negative reactions from families and colleagues or backlash from supporters of masturbation abstinence.
Interviews with researchers, court documents and other reporting paint a picture of an established tendency of some supporters of masturbation abstinence to harass critics by calling employers or targeting them with misogynist or antisemitic slurs, and even violent threats.
The original article contains 3,737 words, the summary contains 234 words. Saved 94%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
JonDorfman@lemmy.world 10 months ago
I know it’s a long article guys, but it worth your time. This summary is a mess and completely removes crucial details, including all the quotes the summary alludes to. If you’ve got 30 minutes and are genuinely interested give it a read or a listen.
Gigan@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Was this article sponsored by OnlyFans?
IMO, NoFap seems like a predictable reaction from people with enough self-awareness to know they’re addicted to porn and that it has negative consequences.
protist@mander.xyz 11 months ago
Did you read the article
richieadler@lemmy.myserv.one 10 months ago
Of course not, complaining about porn by default is the righteous thing to do.
Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 11 months ago
28 min piece. How many of these comments are actually from people who listened or read it. 5%?

What? There is some inaccurate medical information? Online even?
So glad somebody has found out.

npr just got a call from administration they should launch another campaign to help generate more taxpayers by telling people their lifestyle is wrong. communist america. what next? npr tells people church abstinence worries priests and families? if they love masturbation so much maybe npr should masturbate more.
Leviathan@lemmy.world 10 months ago
What does any of this have to do with communism? And how are religious leaders on par with doctors?
dullbananas@lemmy.ca 10 months ago
Derrick tried the 90-day masturbation abstinence reboots but says he could never make it that long, which made him feel awful.
That’s addiction

No it’s not.

I have a similar addiction to dihydrogen monoxide.
dullbananas@lemmy.ca 10 months ago
The need is ejaculation, not masturbation, and stopping masturbation does not prevent ejaculation (there’s nocturnal emission)
