I have read that parents are putting them on their kids cars to hopefully keep them safer. Or their own cars if they are bad drivers. I believe the trend became popular in Utah.

Yes, but most drivers will tend to avoid or drive carefully around them when they see the sticker. I definitely allow more space than usual when I’m behind one. If they’re behind me, I try to move to a different lane.

If other drivers are more cautiously around you, it's already a huge win and to some extent offsets your mistakes.
AlwaysNowNeverNotMe@kbin.social 11 months ago
Ig it's a pass for driving the speed limit and never changing lanes or engaging in peek-a-boo with someone in a compensator.

I know if someone is driving like they don't know what they're doing I'm more patient if I think they're just learning.

I have noticed those as well. I wonder if it could be pandemic related? Like did we get 2-3 years worth of new drivers in one season?

Those 20 somethings are the student drivers. I know a lot of people who didn’t get a license til their mid 20s.

Im glad I wasn’t the only one to notice this.

That’s been a trend where I am. Drivers are a bit aggressive and I assume it’s an attempt at getting people to chill out around them even though I bet it’s just ignored.
It’s wild seeing the occasional car with multiple of these stickers.
metaphortune@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Anecdotal, but I do know personally 2 people who only started driving in their 20s. It’s not a 0% chance that they genuinely are learning to drive.

Honestly, if you live somewhere with really high urban density and/or good public transit, there's a good chance a significant portion of that population has never bothered to learn to drive. So there's lots of people who've never needed to drive in their whole life who find themselves somewhere where you can't exist without a car. Bam, recipe for 30 yo student driver.

Same here in Canada. I think its legitimate learners. Not sure why you think age has anything to do with it, theres no max age to learn to drive. Hell, my late grandma didn’t get her licence/learners permit until she was in her 60s.
Could be related to an influx of immigrations as well, plenty of people didn’t have the luxury to get a drivers licence or own a vehicle.
That or people are just too lazy to remove them haha.

Maybe some kids near you are taking driver’s ed lessons and you’re seeing the instructors before or after?

Imagine thinking “student driver” has something to do with traditional academic education
567PrimeMover@kbin.social 11 months ago
Probably lived somewhere where driving was a regular highschool class. My school had that, and I think it was a sophomore level class. They scrapped it when I was a freshman though, so I never got to take it

Is it so weird that people in their 20s are learning to drive? It’s not mandatory to do it in their teens.
TargaryenTKE@lemmy.world 11 months ago
In addition to all the other (better) answers on this post, I’ll just add: There is literally nothing stopping someone from buying one of those stickers and slapping it on their car like they would any other sticker. No one’s gonna pull you over because you don’t look like a beginner driver
NataliePortland@lemmy.ca 11 months ago
I’ve been noticing it too! It’s not teens and these people clearly aren’t student drivers. IDK what it’s about. My wife and I have been wondering and thinking maybe it’s a Tiktok trend? Or some free Fb giveaway or something? I assume that people think it will make other drivers more forgiving I guess? But where did they get the stickers and why all at once?
VizualWarrior@sh.itjust.works 11 months ago
There are a lot of those on cars in the greater Seattle area. It’s a passive attempt to curb road rage, but it seems to just make things worse IMO.
HeartyBeast@kbin.social 11 months ago
If it is anything like the UK, Covid and lockdowns were massively disruptive to both driving lessons and testing, so there is a substantial bump of new drivers on the road at the moment and people practicing for their test.

I would assume tax write off if its associated with a business.

Parents that are too lazy to take off the magnets when their child isn’t driving.
