So I'm a fairly new mod, and I woke up this morning to 22 reports pertaining the most inane slapfight I've seen in a hot minute.

  I’ll be honest, I followed you here/noticed this thread because I was checking to see if you were ignoring the reports or just weren’t around. But no that I am here, I’m giving you my two cents.

  You are getting a ridiculous amount of reports because you are failing to ban TJD and Momo, who make up the most of the civility issues outside of random dissenters that occasionally see the posts from your sub.

  or the very least not report each other? If you don’t report it, I can at least pretend I didn’t see it and be on my merry way with plausible deniability. Fucking tattle tales.

  The lack of moderation response to Momo is the exact reason why I clapped back at Momo that last time. Your options are:

  1. Deal with the problem makers (TJD & Momo), either by banning them or removing their comments (waiting around for them to edit their comments is not enough).

  2. Don’t do anything and allow your sub to descend into a 4chan-esc world of slurs and insults, probably getting your sub banned in the process.

  The only person I reported was literally going around and calling everyone a “fucking idiot” over every minor disagreement. The first rule says “be civil”. I’m not expecting a outright ban but I would appreciate a warning for someone making this place hostile by antagonizing everyone at every chance they get.

  I’ve been tempted to throw up a sticky on one of the communities I mod just to remind the children that “if you don’t have anything nice to say, just don’t say anything at all.” Dislike the post? Downvote it. You do not need to come in and insult the OP. Especially over pictures of food.

      I say this as a non-mod: mods spend too much emotional effort trying to placate trolls. Ban them. Us normies do not care about the people who do this to communities. Let them go somewhere where people want that garbage.

  Actually yes, it does. When you’re too slow on the trigger, what happens is people will just continuously test your limits, and also expect forgiveness for pushing it too far or they’ll whine hard when you finally drop the banhammer because “they weren’t warned enough”.

  People stay well clear of the line when flirting with the line is risky and dangerous. If you only drop the ban hammer when it’s clear and obviously over the line, people will constantly flirt with the line, and will also dig up every instance where you didn’t drop the banhammer to cry injustice.

  That is especially true for any kind of political community. It may just be some name calling now, but already letting it go is signaling that some amount of name calling is acceptable.

      It’d be good to add an “official warning” (which potentially expires) to Lemmy so that people know what they did was against the rules, but forgivable, and if they do it again they’re banned

      Of course some things warrant a ban straight up but equating them with a heated but essentially harmless debate is harsh

  Personal attacks are against TOS on Reddit (the only good reference I can point to as an explanation) and acting against TOS should lead to a warning first and ban for repeat offenders.
