I’m making my way through the modern Castlevania games, currently playing through the GBA games.
Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 weeks ago Haven’t had too much time or energy to play the past week so I haven’t made much progress. Played another two chapters of The Drifter. Game is still excellent, maybe Chapter 4 has a little too much backtracking and Chapter 5 had the first instances of some more convoluted logic in the game (although I would still not call it “moon logic”). But overall it’s absolutely great. Writing keeps being sharp and funny, pulpy thriller mood and pace keeps being quick and tense, voice acting keeps being top tier.
Must play for point-and-click or adventure game fans, I would say.
So I’ve been making some Rogue Legacy runs while also playing poker (not gambling with real money) for fun in the background. It weirdly works because while the other players think their moves, I clear a room or two and then switch to make a dumb decision like going all in with a pair of 2s.
I’ve also been playing The Riftbreaker one map at a time. Barely unlocked titanium recently and next I’ll have to see what I can research and build with it.
Also, Soulframe in small doses. It’s like Warframe, but with way less content.
Got Grim Dawn and OMG it’s tapped straight into my limbic system.
MagnificentSteiner@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago Still playing Wayfinder. Now over 80hrs in and going for 100% achievements plus I have lots of character and weapon leveling still to do. Once I get all the achievements done I’ll probably slow down on it and keep the rest of it for when I have something to watch on my 2nd monitor.
I also played the demo for Guildrun this week. It’s a rogue-like auto-battler similar to The Last Flame and online only games like DOTA Autochess and Teamfight Tactics. The art is absolutely gorgeous and from the 1 run I did so far it seems to have quite a lot of depth. I’d say it’s quite similar to TFT so if you want a single-player version of that it should be to your liking. Definitely looking forward to the full release!
Sinking my teeth into Hollow Knight, just “finished” Subnautica 2 in its current state
Since I have trouble playing things I was planning to play I decided to go with something outside of my usual ball park: Syberia.
It’s my second or third attempt at the game and this time I was be able to actually finish it. I completely forgot that the main character is a lawyer trying to buy a small local company for a huge corporation so hearing it again made me want to stop playing right away to make sure she fails at her job.
Seriously though, game is good. It’s also not for me. While I can appreciate its quality, the whole thing failed to grab me on a fundamental level, leading to an enjoyable but somehow hollow experience.
Characters work well as, well, “characters” though I can’t say they are enjoyable as people. I especially couldn’t care less for Kate’s personal and professional drama. Story chapters felt less like a cohesive whole and more like a bunch of ideas devs thought would be cool. Not to mention the ending which came pretty much out of nowhere. It wasn’t terrible, no by a long shot but it never managed to get to a point where I cared about what’s going on in the story.
On a more positive note, both puzzles (for the most part) and graphics hold up really well. I was a bit worried about the former since I’m not too experienced with point and clicks but I managed to finish the whole thing with very few issues. On the other hand, Syberia’s graphical prowess wasn’t too surprising - both the beautifully animated backgrounds and pre-rendered cutscenes survived the test of time, resulting in a game that looks fantastic to this day.
As mentioned before, it might not rank among my favourites but it was an interesting experience nonetheless. That said, I don’t think I’ll be playing the sequel any time soon. I’ll get to it eventually, I already have it after all, but I’ll have to wait until I’m in a mood for another point and click adventure. I might even try something else before that happens, we’ll see how it goes.
Grid 2 - I played the first game a few months ago and came out of the experience happy but a little unsatisfied due to limited content. Decided to give this one ago as, like with Syberia games, I already have it in my library.
Long story short: I’m way more mixed on this one than I ever felt about the original. Probably won’t be staying with it for too long. Here are some initial thoughts:
As mentioned at the start, game didn’t leave too great of an impression on me so far. I’ll play a bit more to farm some steam cards to sell (and to give it another chance, I guess) but I won’t be playing it to completion like the first game.
Managed to get another hidden achievement in Hitman this week, but that’s about it. Only got around 30 mins of gaming this week, but I’m slowly chipping away and the achievement list.
I’m still playing Alan Wake 2:
I’m at Lakeview Hotel With Alan, I did Coffee World and went back to town with Saga. I love Alan’s half, it’s fresh, keeps you engaged and you never know what you’re going to find around the corner. The music video bit was awesome. Saga on the other hand is… boring. I don’t like the detective stuff as much as I thought. It drags on, has you running around to find items and aside from a few bits here and there it isn’t very engaging. Maybe it gets better later on, but so far I’m tempted to keep playing Alan and ignore Saga for good. It’s like they shoehorned 2 different games together for no reason.
I’ve played Tainted Grail a bit more:
It’s not bad, although so far I don’t find it very engaging. But it’s kept me playing for a bit, so we’ll see.
And when in doubt, back to comfort food. I retook my 4th playthrough of Heaven’s Vault:
I’m going to try to keep Enkei this time. Last time I chickened out at the last moment and saved Six. I’ve already read the 4 books, so it’s just out of curiosity to see if it differs from the book.
Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 weeks ago I didn’t mind Saga, I liked several of her chapters (the one coming after Coffee World was one of my favourites) and I enjoyed the mixup in playstyles, environments and weaponry to create some variety. I also thought it was neat to see the reality-rewriting happen in real time for her in parallel to the Alan stuff. The one thing that I didn’t like with her was all the collectibles, I felt that those ruined the tempo and pace and were just busywork put out to meet the expectations of modern gamers but actually detracted from and otherwise tight and concise story.
For sure Alan’s chapters are the stars of the show though, they’re just fantastic and show the full range of Remedy writing, art direction, creativity and mixed media use.
I’m probably exaggerating , I’m in a quite negative mindset at the moment due to other stuff, but I still think the make you run around too much to find stuff in order to advance in Saga’s parts. I’ll keep playing as her, I’m curious about what’s to come now.
By the way, the game performance keeps disappointing, but I got used to it.
ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 3 weeks ago I beat the first Gabriel Knight from Sierra for the first time. I was surprised how excellent the voice acting is, and liked the direction it was going, but the ending was kind’ve off putting, and I ended up needing a hint book toward the end due to some pretty out-there puzzle design, but overall I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
I tried the sequel, which is rated pretty highly, but found the switch to FMV unfortunately unbearable due to really slow, poorly acted awkward dialog, and a big down grade in the music and setting, so I chose to pass on it.
Instead, I discovered that with a little soldering, I can convert my 90’s sidewinder joystick from game-port to USB, making it usable on modern PC’s. That made me curious to finally try Wing Commander 3, a space dogfighter combined with interactive FMVs. It took some fiddling with Dosbox to get it working, but I tried the first few minutes, and was impressed with the quality of acting on display thanks to the cast having Mark Hamil, John rys Davis, and the villain guy from back to the future.
I have been playing Persona 5 Royal, I am around 30 hours in and I’m really enjoying it. I have played 3 and 4 before and I’m thinking that next time I have an itch for something like this I might go back and try 2: Innocent Sin at some point in the future.
Half Life Alyx replay with the Miku mod. I just got through Ch. 6 and I hope to find some cheese strategies for Ch. 7 before I do that one.

Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 weeks ago How hard is God Hand? It’s become a bit of a cult classic but I’m somewhat intimidated by it, especially as someone who hasn’t played many fighting games.
I’m not very far in yet but it doesn’t seem especially hard. You can change the difficulty as well.
God Hand has a dynamic scaling difficulty system akin to Resident Evil 4 (same director). The better you are at the game the tougher it gets. That said, the baseline level of difficulty is reflex-heavy & rewards careful observation of enemy attacks. Persistent players can get through most challenges, with the boss fights being the hardest barriers. I would compare the difficulty to Sekiro in 1:1 fights, the fights become this careful dance where one mistake can kill you. Hella fun if you’re into it.
I wanted to take a break from grinding achievements on The Binding of Isaac, so I tried Nuclear Throne and I’m really enjoying it! Of course, I’m still ass at the game, but it doesn’t detract it from becoming addictive and the sound man, it’s so well done. Every weapon sounds like it makes you recoil when you fire them. The explosions are super loud and crispy. And the sounds of the characters and bosses are both funny and unhinged. Plus, it seems they’ve been improving the game with updates on the past 10 years or so which is amazing from the devs. Overall I’m very happy to have discovered this gem from the not so distant past.
Fallout 4 again, again…this time Survival with no mods. Its masochistic fun 😀
I’m on FO4 as well. Started it probably 3 or 4 times and never managed to get too far. But it looks a lot more promising this time. Found the right mods to tailor the game to my needs (a lot less radiant bullshit and easier outpost building).
Its been a while since my last play through with mods but holy shit it makes a massive difference. Back when I last played with mods I remember turning OFF auto updates for Fallout 4 so my mods didn’t break - something to think about maybe. Good Luck in the Wasteland!
sto and no mans sky. these make a funny combo because no mans sky has what sto lacks. being able to configure your ship and walk around it.
Mass Effect LE, in order to finally get around to playing ME3.
I’m only at my third restart and that’s after finding the last Keeper on the second. I never seem able to settle for one of the base classes.
A Really patience demanding game - even when you know the story by memory you still need to click through all the pages to test options. I played three runs in a row and don’t feel like playing it for a while now. Which is probably good because it’ll make it last longer.
Probably not everyone’s cup of tea but I find the stat-mixing aspect of it fascinating, and I know I’m not alone because it’s how other players in the discord play as well.

Also this week: Stardew Valley. Started yet another new save, deleted all my others; this time I will take it from start to finish without starting any new saves. (I’ve reached perfection once already and gotten to ginger island half a dozen times)

I got really into that game about a year ago. I never finished it, but had a blast playing it. I should really revisit it sometime, maybe once I’ve got 100% in Hitman (my current goal).
