    Fuck Google!

Guys, what you need to do to be competetive, to foster competition… is keep using all our products and services.

Setting up a fund to get new people involved, to get some more money to existing software devs who work on comparable products and servicrs that could be expanded and improved?

No no no, thats uh, that’s anti-competetive, is what that is.

    Mhm.

    Yep.

bad for competition? If people want FOSS software, well go make a good product then!

Google has forgotten how to do competition.

They are well aware that US companies placing servers in the EU does nothing for “data sovereignty”, they are bound by the Cloud Act and anything the US demand takes precedence over the GDPR / EU regulations.

Thanks you for your concerns, Google. Now, fuck you.

Absolutely brilliant, the company that will be affected the most together with Microslop says its not a good idea to stop paying them

Carthaginians furious Rome stopped paying them and instead invests in a fleet of their own.

If Europe cares about climate change they will force carriers to open source their firmware. Why should a phone be allowed to be non-updateable?

because how else will we protect the children if not with lockdd down phones with built in surveillance?

but I hope you are right.

Google’s chief legal officer clarified that he is not opposed to digital sovereignty, but recommended making use of the “best technologies in the world.”

goog chief legal just being an edgelord while undermining some small things like uhhh… goog being under beck and call of an orange baby.

he didn’t really define what’s “best technologies” are – in the world.

we can say COBOL is still alive because it is the “best technology” at what it can do.

It seems to me that his advice is sound, and that the eu is following it. Google is just not the best technologies in the world, and hadn’t been for a long while.

So, you’re saying Google has selection bias?

    source
  • timestatic@feddit.org ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

The government should just pay some money to maintainers instead of giving it to corpos. That way everyone wins, instead of just google because the code is in the hand of the public. Also google, please just like, politely, fuck off. We know you guys want in on this, even if we need an out. Everyone knows your worries aren’t for public interest but for your own pockets. FOSS actually supports a much more competitive landscape by not locking in users and allowing people to build on each others ideas instead of creating monopolies.

    “could harm competitiveness”

Wouldn’t it be funny if they took the pool of cash they were dedicating to google, but it in half then distributed the remained to the open source initiatives they were switching to?

    source
    • Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

I think it would increase competitiveness as well.

Google will actually have to innovate if they want to have people buy their products rather than just being the default one and only choice.

      source
  • fodor@lemmy.zip ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

Yes of course it would hurt Google’s economic growth. That’s one of the good points. Why pay for new features that nobody wants to support a company everybody hates. Better to go FOSS and make the world a better and safer place, and also save your taxpayers a lot of money.

Walker suggested that American companies could collaborate with European firms to implement measures ensuring data protection.

Simultaneously, those same companies are actively lobbying the EU to dismantle those protections.

It’s like there are three major political forces in the market: USA, China, Open Source. If we leave the dominant place for another IT world hurt competition? How exactly?

Google trying to scare Europe into giving them money and power back in their region 😥 Stfu and let Europe get their individuality and contribute to open source projects which will help Americans like me much more than any amount of money given to Google.

According to Google, the idea of replacing current tools with open-source programs would not contribute to economic growth.

It would be more accurate to call it artificial economic growth.
But, these fuckheads would get laughed out of town if they told the truth.

    • lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

The only economic growth they are referring to is Google’s economic growth.

Google literally supports a bunch of open source. Wtf are they saying?

    source
    • johncandy1812@lemmy.ca ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

In a lot of cases (like Mozilla), they supported these efforts to legally maintain their monopoly over digital services.

Google is an ad company, they are using their size and influence to redesign the rules of the internet to ensure their presence can’t be bypassed or controlled by the end user.

They want all internet traffic to pass through them.

Burn Google to the ground I say.

      source
      • hector@lemmy.today ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

So they supported open source just enough to say there is competition and their products are the most popular because they are superior and not because of our anti competitive behavior? And they supported mozilla at one point? Too bad mozilla is going to hell now too I might have to switch.

Do you have any good reading on this? I would be interested in learning the details of google supporting open source as a foil to accusations they are an illegal monopoly/trust and whatever else.

I would rather use a tin-can radio than fascist tech. Fuck you, Google. Reap what you sow. You helped American Nazis get in power and you help them stay in power. You deserve to disappear with them when Trump and his vile losers go to jail.

  • kokesh@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

How can anyone choosing something else than your product hurt competitiveness? Suck it Google and go back to “overseas” reich.

  • SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

Obviously the ultimate goal is to free themselves from dependance on the US and the Trump admin has shown that this need has become crucial. Establish a non-profit organization with the mandate to maintain, respond to user needs and keep secure the software for the public. The EU and the org’s board can meet every year to discuss what direction they want to go with it.
