Yes, layaway was typically used for bigger purchases. It wasn’t Klarna for a slice of pizza.
- Comment on Where does technology come from in Star Wars? 1 week ago:
Some of their technology is vastly ahead of ours, other technologies are way behind. The behind stuff is far more interesting. Comms in Star Wars is weird and anachronistic with other tech in the show.
I also get a giggle out of tech used in the show only to drive plot: like how protagonists can scan ships for life forms but protagonists also only power down ships to evade the eye of a passing baddy ship.

Strange message,
Let’s just say we’re experimenting with silence,” a spokesperson for Duolingo told Fast Company over email. “Sometimes, the best way to make noise is to disappear first."
- Comment on The USA spends $15k/student annually which is 30% higher than the global median. Why do U.S. schools have "fundraisers" where kids are incentivized to sell stuff to people? 1 week ago:
Have to teach kids to beg for the bare essentials early in life. That way they’ll never know it could be different.

Gets into the part that the hardware battery pack industrial complex needs to be regulated as well. So much e-waste and batteries use in most contexts where an extension cable is more suitable.

- Comment on AI will replace routine — freeing people for creativity. 3 weeks ago:
Every technological innovation has been described this way in recent history. Some think it utopic navel gazing. The reality is that until capitalism is seriously reigned in, or eliminated, this sort of thinking can never be true.
That said, AI is a tool for capitalism, it simply will not exist without it. It takes gigantic for profit server farms to function, farms run by big corporate entities with shareholders to appease.
