Something taking over another something usually doesn’t end up well for the user’s.

True but thingiverse has been neglected for years now. Printables, Maker world, thangs, etc. are much better sites with a much better user experience.

Thingiverse was dying before this take over, so hopefully they’ll improve it.

If not, there’s plenty of competition out there.

As part of our commitment to SoulCrafted content, MyMiniFactory has adopted a zero-tolerance stance on AI generated content on our platform.

Thingiverse is now a SoulCrafted platform. In practice, that means we’ll be taking steps to reduce and eventually remove AI-generated designs from the site.

That is really interesting. I wonder how they are going to find those and remove.

Even before the boom of AI, I remember seeing a lot of random crap of unusual shapes just being added together and uploaded. I wonder if they’ll remove those too.

I hope they overhaul Thingiverse’s user interface.

Fuck me, I love the site but the UI makes borderlands 1 look like a masterpiece.

There’s 3d printing as art, but then also 3d printing for utility. I use it primarily for the latter. For art I don’t want AI generated junk, so filtering that is ok, but I usually won’t like it if it’s Ai generated and can pick it out anyway. I don’t want barriers in Ai generated things like tool parts, shelf, etc. Though. All I care about there is quality. I want someone to have tested and reviewed it at least, but I’m not dogmatic at all about whether Ai produced it. I think the 3d printing community cares more about quality control on model libraries than just Ai gatekeeping.

Nearly every 3d print that has an AI generated tag also has no actual pictures of a printed part.

I think people just AI generate, than assume it’s fine and post it, but never actually print it.

That’s why I keep the “no AI” filter on, really cleans up the junk posts.

How I tried to get AI to generate an openscad file and it sucked.

There is a render. I assume id the algorithm is “smart” enough to create a mesh it can also evaluate the overhang angle at every given point. I suspect they do. But yes it’s a good way of telling if anybody actually wanted to make this object or just habe a nice upload.

I’m in a tricky position here.

I use MyMiniFactory, have backed several frontiers things and am a member of a few tribes.

I also use Thingiverse a lot.

And while I certainly don’t want to pay for AI content, I don’t mind that much if it’s free. There have been times that I’ve looked for something for DnD and the only option was AI generated. And honestly, I’d much rather have that than no model at all.

There are LOTS of other places STLs are hosted. The dregs will move to new hosts.

Yah thingiverse kind of fell off of my radar over the years with printables.

Could you explain to me what the issue here is and how does AI enter into it?

In the linked article, MyMiniFactory say that they’ll ultimately be removing AI content from Thingiverse.
