I’m uncertain on this as its being made without Larian and likely has more involvement from Hasbro, now that the latter is realizing BG has turned out to be a golden goose despite their attempts to wring it for cash.

While we are at it, I would really love to see a new adventure of the Honour Among Thieves Party. I loved that movie, please give us more!

Chris Pine is expensive now.
psycotica0@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
He was pretty expensive then too. He’d already done the Star Treks.

It won’t be accurate unless the barbarian characters are running around naked all the time.

I really hope its focusing on a character from a hard place (maybe Menzoberanzan). It could be a warrior male from a high family, but who doesnt fit into the culture. As we follow this character on adventures, he picks up magical weapons (scimitars are cool), and maybe some sort of animal companion?

I haven’t read the books… (shame, I know) but is this just describing Drizzt?
Droechai@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 weeks ago
Yes, yes it does :)

I think we can all agree that the best option for this story-wise is a rom-com centered around Karlach in an alternate reality where her infernal engine makes her get into all kinds of shenanigans while on a quest for true love.

oh no

I think it’s a mistake to ride the coattails of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Don’t get me wrong, I think more Forgotten Realms stories could make for good TV. The Honor Among Thieves movie from a few years ago was fantastic.
But I just don’t see why they’d give up on making one D&D TV series a couple years ago, only to start a brand new one with more baggage. Instead of telling an original story, they’re tied down to a story continuity that is inevitably going to leave a lot of fans disappointed regardless of the direction they take.
P1k1e@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
They think they can pull the RPG crowd to TV if they promise more time with their characters…but it also adds a mandatory cannon, so I’m pretty sure it’ll have the opposite effect

Saw a video about comedies from the early 2000’s and some of the old heads were talking about how they didn’t need IP’s cuz the actors and the situation was all they needed. Paul Rudd has to do community service watching a kid. Jason Segal got dumped and goes on vacation to try and forget about his ex. Steve Carell is a virgin at 40, etc etc. It’s crazy that every studio now seems to NEED an IP or else they can’t make a movie.

From afar, you get the impression that suits are in charge and if there isn’t already some “proof of popularity” of some sort, it won’t get greenlit

Does it make sense to do this for something that is already part of a larger franchise (d&d)? Diablo would be a better candidate for a linear story I think.
HubertManne@piefed.social 2 weeks ago
I think its a mistake to do it as a followup. they should at least have a movie or miniseries with the initial story. I mean gamers yeah played it and know the story but for a tv series they should do the initial story. Not to mention the whole ship crashing thing is to big a opportinity for cinematics.
Akasazh@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I’d be bummed if the main character isn’t called Tav

I missed those series dearly… My father and I used to pay it day and day out, we always wondered if they would make an actual budget movie that made sense and went along with the timelines… For some reason, Hollywood thinks that a fantasy movie that comes from DND has to be some “b” movie. considering how many people enjoy this type of thing you would think that it would be more poignant to make it big. just because it gets big, doesn’t mean that it has to be pushed into the category of mainstream. I don’t think… I would just really like to see a movie that actually does it justice. some of these fantasy series are just as big as something like Lord of the rings, but never got the recognition for it. so us (more nerdy folks ) have to just deal with this low budget of shit.

Can we just not do this?
One, not every thing needs to be a whole franchise universe.
Two, the game had a lot of decisions players could make. Collapsing that into a single canon is going to be unsatisfying. It was annoying enough that bg3 made some big decisions about choices from bg2.
Related, if they ever make another game in the franchise this show will probably be canon, so it’s not entirely ignorable.
Three, it’s not even that interesting a setting. It’s pretty Standard Fantasy.
Grimy@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
We don’t get many high budget fantasy shows. I’m all for it. Larian is already moving away from big anyways, I think wizards of the coast upped their licensing price by quite a bit.
PoliteDudeInTheMood@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
That was an annoying thing, every Larian game that was released in EA had an EA price. BG3 didn’t, it was full price from the start. And a highly inflated price than what Larian titles had been going for once released.

Because HBO has a good track record for fantasy shows?
ampersandrew@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
We’ve had a pretty good hit rate with video game adaptations lately. Fallout and Arcane are both among my favorite TV shows. I think we finally got far enough along that show runners are gamers themselves and aware of what makes these things good and what needs to change to be a good show.
jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 2 weeks ago
I kind of refuse to watch Fallout. Partly because I read they fucked up the NCR. But also Amazon sucks , and Bethesda is kind of creatively bankrupt.
iamthetot@piefed.ca 2 weeks ago
You know you don’t have to watch it.
jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 2 weeks ago
Technically I don’t have to watch it. I don’t have to play any more games in the franchise either. But if I do want to play more games in the franchise, I’ll probably have to deal with the show.
Damage@feddit.it 2 weeks ago
Yeah but they’ll mess with the canon and then we’ll all have to deal with it.
HubertManne@piefed.social 2 weeks ago
wait. bg3 is influenced by the bg2 story?
IntrovertTurtle@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
Somewhat. It’s story is mostly independent, but it does take place after 2 and therefore has canonized several of the decisions you could make in 2, as well as a few returning characters.
mcforest@feddit.org 2 weeks ago
Bruh, DnD already is one.
