Hopefully this doesn’t break all the great mods that’ve been developed over the years
The original FINAL FANTASY VII is getting a new refreshed edition

Maybe it’s just me but I kind of hope it does.
I love the mods but they work because the 2013 version is just the 1998 version repackaged. Why would SE make yet another version based on the rickety old codebase of the 1998 version? If that was the case this would just be a version update.
This strategy is why the mobile port of FFVII is also awful, it’s literally just the PC port in a virtualization wrapper. The 1998/2013 version will be around for anyone who wants to use the mods. I’m hoping to see something akin to the Unity rebuild we got for FFIX, which will allow a wave of new supported ports for mobile as well.

I’m confused why they’re releasing what’s effectively a patch for the 2013 release as a standalone thing. Why not update what we already have?

The update breaks save compatibility.

That’s the source of my confusion. They’ve re-released FFVII on nearly everything, remastered it, etc; I guess I’m more confused by their decision to break save compatibility.
I have gobs of games that have saves in different game versions. Some games handle large updates as “mods” that can simply be toggled. Some auto-update the old save. It’s doable. For the company that’s rewritten this game a half dozen times I can’t imagine it was because they “couldn’t”. Maybe if they ran out of time?

Still waiting for FFIX pixel hd remake. Or update the regular FFIX with that faster combat animations mod so it’s pleasant out the box
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 weeks ago
FFIX was a 3D game, they’re not going to make a pixel hd remake for it. If anything, it’ll be a full remaster

As a guy who never played FF7 is this version worth it? Or I can get a good experience modding a psx one? I’ll be honest the blocky map models are too off putting for me.
blipcast@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
The graphics have not aged well. If you want to stay close to the original experience though, there are numerous mods that swap the field models for the ones used in battle.

Now we talking!

Have you played other Final Fantasies?
Do you tend to find yourself prefering the magitech futuristic ones, like 8 and 15, or do you prefer the classic fantasy setting ones like 6 and 9?
If you’ve played other final fantasy games, and like the magitech future ones, then I’d say get it. its only 5 bucks, thats an easy price to justify for a game thats going away and never coming back… and depending on what changes they make to their yet to be released update, 2013 might end up becoming a preferable version to have.
Honestly, its going away forever, so even if you don’t like the magitech ones… might be worth 5 bucks just to have it in case you might want to play it 3 years down the line.
As for story and graphics, well, its a 29 year old game, man. 2013s version is more improved over PSX, but its still gonna be a 29 year old game. If you are someone who cant tolerate retro gaming because of the graphics, then you’ll probably not enjoy FF7… You can mod the graphics, but last I tried (granted, this was years ago)the modding was kind of a pain in the ass and I was never able to successfully get through it.

I love 6 and 8 played 4 and such. But the blocky style killed all situations for me is not that I like.cool graphics they looking like chinese lego knock offs was too much. I honestly want to play it and most probably still will when I have the time now I have to study databricks for a work opportunity.
In short I will play it regardless but damn those legos.

This reminded me Ever Crisis existed, but then got upset again when I remembered it was a gacha game.

If you think this is great news, just wait until they announce their next big project: Final Fantasy VII refined! And after that: Final Fantasy VII reworked.
There are even rumors of a Final Fantasy VII reboot!

I’d trash on Squenix for this more of it wasn’t going to be free to owners of the previous version and wasn’t likely to fix a bunch of issues (like controller support). As announced it is basically a large patch to the current version.
Baaron87@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
As someone who finished Rebirth recently and decided to revisit the original after, I’m actually glad to hear about this newer version. Mostly for the (hopefully improved) controller support.
A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Nah, feel free to trash regardless.
SquareEnix has become an awful, greedy, shit of a company. I’m sure they’ll fuck up this new version somehow.
