You’re welcome!

Ah, so you’ve already played that one then? Hmm, the only other thing I could think of would be what one of the other comments said about turning off bonus stars and upping the difficulty for mini-games.
It could also be that you want to find a different type of party game like you mentioned. A few friends of mine have occasionally talked about a game called Donkapon Kingdom (think I spelled it right); I don’t know if that’s more luck or skill based though.
I haven’t really played other ones even though I lived through those prior generations.
I relate to this quite a bit. I dropped off Mario Party after the second game had come out because at the time, I’d had my fill of it. Didn’t play any of the GameCube games or MP3 until this past decade. I would recommend playing MP6 from the GC if you decide to try it. You can get trap based items to set on the board; some temporary, others permanent. Definitely becomes more strategic IMO. It’s why I like it so much honestly.

I forgot about the different pathways in that game. Now that I’m thinking about it, I remember enjoying that quite a bit! Couldn’t tell you what boards were there. I think one had a hotel if I remember correctly, but that’s all I recall.
Yeah, the switch versions are…interesting. Super Mario Party I felt catered too much to what I would refer to as a “casual” crowd. Which is basically the group that wouldn’t be playing games in the first place. Mini-games were decent. Boards were ok, but not very memorable; I’d label them as basic. Definitely not a bad game but pretty far down on my list of what I would play from the series.
Mario Party Superstars in comparison was “better” but while playing it just felt hollow to me. Seeing the classic boards reimagined was cool, but for the MP2 boards, it felt like some of their charm didn’t make it over. Still fun, don’t get me wrong, just feels like something is missing.
Haven’t played any version of Jamboree and probably won’t any time soon.

I completely forgot about these options, that’s a great point.

I have played it on original hardware. Thankfully the only time I did, the group voted against the mic lol. The fact that it had to use an entire memory card slot to function (while a cool use of tech) just never sat right with me.
That said, when it was on store shelves I saw it and just remember thinking “ugh, why?” Just not my cup of tea I guess.

From my understanding the least random one would probably be Mario Party 10. You move around as a group, which in my opinion, takes the fun out of the experience. That’s all I really know about it though, haven’t played it myself for that exact reason. It still has mini games from what I understand. Hoping someone else here can provide more feedback on this, as I wouldn’t mind more info on it.
Which version of Mario Party are you and your friends playing out of curiosity?
If we’re also including more recent games, the first Mario Party for the Switch might fit the bill a bit from how the joycons have to be used. That should be Super Mario Party if I remember right. There’s still a good amount of luck involved, but movement is key so that definitely includes skill.

Me personally I would say Mario Party 2 and 6. My absolute favorite is 6 out of the two.
MP2 because of how different every single board felt (the costumes are a factor here for me too). Plus there’s a lot of mini-games that are still great to this day. MP3 definitely still has some favorites too, but I prefer the second one.
MP6 I think is the best entry on the GameCube. Great mini games. Takes all the features from 4&5 and fully fleshed them out, which can make the boards chaotic, which can be more fun IMO.
7 is where I feel the series started to lose its luster. It wasn’t what I would call bad, there’s still a good game there at its core. That said, it felt unnecessary to me as an entry. I barely remember 7 and greatly remember 6.
As an honorable mention, I think 8 started to move back in the right direction, even if I didn’t care for the laughing hat character. The mini games were fun and I remember having fun with my friends at the time. Still prefer 6 and 2 over it though.
To this day I still have no interest in playing 9 or 10 lol.

I definitely get what you’re saying on that. Leaving behind communities that you’re a part of, potentially for years or longer, is not appealing.
The sad reality is that is where each individual person will have to weigh their options and beliefs.
For me personally, I’m already down to just a few personal communities on Discord and for the one that I run, I will be migrating to either something like Stoat, Matrix or even a good old fashioned web forum. This all stems from not trusting Discord with my personal information, which works for me. Obviously not a one size fits all situation.
It would be nice to see Discord realize that they’re making a huge mistake and backtrack the decision, but I don’t see that happening.
Perhaps this will lead to communities migrating to web forums down the road? Only time will tell.

Will do. I need to set aside some time to see about it working with most, if not all my devices and go from there.
I did see someone else mention elsewhere that it is possible, but I don’t remember the source.
There’s also Matrix if you don’t mind tinkering around a bit too as another option.

Yeah, I just learned about that. Really unfortunate. Seems like Stoat is the next option

Oof. That’s news to me. I’m seeing some stuff about Stoat pop up. Guess that’s what I’ll look into next

For an exact 1:1 replacement? Yeah, I do agree about that. If anyone looking for options doesn’t mind making some compromises it opens the doors quite a bit.
I shared in another reply a link to some alternatives. Guilded seems to be the closest to a 1:1 replacement for now.
My personal concern is having to repeat this again if the next proprietary platform becomes too big. My friend group has gone through google hangouts (it was a different time lol), the curse client, which became a Twitch product eventually and then Discord.
I’m at the point where I’m considering going back to web forums and things like teamspeak/ventrillo.

For a potential 1:1 Discord alternative? The one that has stood out to me is Guilded. I started looking at alternatives last year when talk about this was starting to float around and forgot about it.
Here’s a recent article with alternatives that I found in a quick search. Don’t agree with all of them personally, but I’m not the target audience for some of them.

To quote general Grevious:
“Time to abandon ship”
There’s plenty of other options out there. Discord has been enshitifying for a while now, so I don’t mind dropping it

I’m kind of for that to be honest. Will be playing it sometime over the weekend for sure

As someone who finished Rebirth recently and decided to revisit the original after, I’m actually glad to hear about this newer version. Mostly for the (hopefully improved) controller support.

The A3D (or A64) has an option to “overclock” the chipset so games that used to crawl on OG hardware run buttery smooth

I finally did this last week. I had been meaning to for a while now. I got homebrew stuff setup, did a NAND backup and looked at what type of chipset my system has. I lucked out with a Samsung chipset.
Now I’m working with the fun stuff: homebrew apps, Pretendo, etc

Super delayed reply on this; I got around to setting it back up this past week finally. Did a NAND backup too right after

I was starting to group together my older computers for potential recycling, but they’re now going to be repurposed after thorough testing. Not a fan of where big tech currently wants to go

What an absolute non-answer Moore provided.
Remember which companies are pulling this nonsense and boycott them going forward.

The fact that Twilight Princess HD and The Wind Waker HD are still trapped there surprises me.
I need to reconnect my Wii U again

Sad but true. Right now the only way to guarantee an order is to either be early and fast enough to beat the bots/scalpers or buy something that’s been readily available.
- Comment on Does the analogue3d work with a SummerCard64? 2 months ago:
**TL;DR - For the Analogue 3D or even the OG N64, I would pick the Summercart 64. More details below. **
My preference is likely a bit biased but I prefer the SC64 for the following reasons:
-
It’s open sourced. This may be important as time goes on since the only one who can provide updates to the Everdrive is Krikzz. That said, Krikzz does an amazing job with keeping his stuff updated in a timely manner. He had a fix for the X7 out within a week of the Analogue 3D being released.
-
I prefer the menu layout compared to the ED. All your games appear in one long menu (can page down/up with the c-buttons. On the ED there’s a limit per page. Both still allow you to play and have a good time)
-
Price: I spent around $50 when I bought mine. For comparison, the cost of the X7 was well over double that.
For other systems though (NES, SNES, GB/GBC, GBA, Sega systems, etc), until something like the SC64 is available I would absolutely pick up an Everdrive, despite the high cost.
And congrats on getting a system ordered! I know how much it can be a mad dash to get one. Hoping Analogue, INC. changes things to open preorders prior to production going forward after this.
Oh, before I forget. For both the SC64 or the ED64 (technically for anything that isn’t an official retail cartridge) for now they will show up as an “Unknown Cartridge” on the Analogue 3D home screen. This will not have any effect on gameplay

This is what I really enjoy about RA. When I started going through games on it, it made me change how I played the Mega Man games. Absolutely worth it. I need to get back to playing some more retro games again.
