Here’s a medium take, most of human culture across its history has consisted of the same stories told anew. The only problem now is that the gatekeepers of our culture are moneyed interests, and the influence of shareholder interests and oligarchs means we end up watching the colour and life fade from our culture in realtime as capitalism declines.

Sane take IMO, you have selected the medium podium well

They do reboots just so they don’t lose the trademark.

Reboots happen every 10 years bcause that’s how long trademark registration lasts.

Yeah that’s part of it. That’s one specific mechanism by which our culture is in the hands of people with perverse incentives.

Slightly hotter take - this one may be the consumer’s fault. They keep making them because 1. copyright expiration, and 2. people keep fucking watching it! This is such an easy thing to use your wallet as a vote on.

Last year, an amazing movie called Juror #2 came in the cinemas. Not a remake (to my knowledge) or sequel of any kind. I watched in the first week of release in my country. I had to go to a less-well known cinema because the main ones did not even show it in that city. And once there, we were in a small watching room that wasn’t even full. One week into release. Meanwhile, Gladiator 2 down the hall was in a nearly sold-out, much larger room.

I love shitting on big corporations like many lemmings here, but in this specific instance, I think the consumers are at fault. Movies are not a necessity. Pirate them if you really want to watch a remake/sequel, and pay for original stuff. Companies keep making nostalgia slop because people keep paying them for it. It really is that simple.

Read “The Hero with a Thousand Faces” by Joseph Campbell. Myths repeat through cultures and influence every story that follows. We’re constantly recycling

      • Ilixtze@lemmy.ml ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

Campbells work has been debunked by a lot of researchers, not only it cherry picks data; it pushed the lie that his little structure is universal while ignoring a lot of cultures and and traditional story structures that pay no attention to it. It is a very popular story structure in the mainstream west because it is very manipulative towards the audience. Frank Herbert hated Campbell; The Dune novels have thematic elements that go against the hero’s journey on purpose.

      • yakko@feddit.uk ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

Campbell’s work is valuable and interesting, but I like it better as a lens for modern media rather than as some grand unified theory of human culture.

Old franchises don’t even try to explore strange new worlds anymore but rather boldly go where they have been before (sorry not sorry for the SNW season 3 spoiler)

I’ll fucking spoil it. It has celebration of eugenics in it, everyone should not watch it.

I dunno, not even old franchise but even with Avatar the Last Airbender … they keep trying to retell Aang’s story when they could do so many others stories within the universe and give nods to the original. Repeatedly doing the same storyline makes it feel smaller.

      source
      • theneverfox@pawb.social ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

What? Avatar is like 20 years old, had a second series years later that explored the changed world a generation later, and has had only live action adaptations of the original story

This does not seem like a good example…

Eeh, this one has potential. It’s almost all the original crew (inc. the writers and the non Joss showrunner!) getting a chance to go back and tell more stories in a project they all loved and that’s had a lasting cultural impact. There’s a difference between people passionately revisitimg a sequel, and the gutless corpse of something being draped over a generic script and set loose on the unsuspecting villagers to milk them for all they’re worth like has been happening so much with Disney and Paramount lately (fucking Starfleet Academy)

    source
    • jaaake@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

Do we know enough about Starfleet Academy to hate it? I like the genre of show it seems to be and love the idea of such a thing in the Star Trek universe. Why are all the teenage melodrama shows always in a magical/vampire setting? Why not SciFi? Clearly my perspective isn’t the majority of the current Stat Trek audience, but why not broaden that audience and welcome new fans to the tent?

      • Jobe@feddit.org ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

We don’t know enough to say it’s bad yet, but it seems to not be what most Star Trek fans want out of a new show. People will go in expecting it to be bad, so it will have to be incredible just to be accepted. My hopes are not high, considering how Discovery ended.

thier formula for nutrek is pretty poor, when it was jump started by JJ abrams, and then kurtzman took the helm. thier current strategy, is forget the previous season and or movie, and look at this shiny new trek show we made, rinse and repeat.

Forgive me for being born after the 90s y’all, but sometimes it’s nice to have a reboot. Well. I could care less about movie/TV show reboots since so many places show the originals or you could pirate, but when it comes to games, I appreciate being able to enjoy the same games my mom did but with slightly better graphics and on a console we own/PC. And yes, I could pirate the originals, but sometimes it’s nice to play it as it was intended, especially for hand held games.

Yes reboots can be lazy and uninspired, and simply for money purposes, but other times it’s nice to see something come back to life and get a second chance. There’s so much stuff I wouldn’t have known about or enjoyed if it wasn’t for reboots.

I’m actually watching the original buffy right now for the first time, even though I was a highschool kid when it originally aired.

Go watch that. It holds up very well. I’m about to start season 6 (of 7) right now. Only thing that dates it really, is that no one has cell phones. They were common to have in the mid 90’s to early 2000’s when the show aired, but tons of movies and TV shows around then chose to mostly ignore their existence because they blocked off or simplified so many plot points and story lines. It’s strange to think that no one beyond my generation will know what it was like to not have cell phones and the internet.

I’m fine with reboots because if all we had was original content, this complaining society would complain about not having reboots.

When an original show or movie comes out nobody watches, especially movies. Franchises and sequels keep getting made because they’re being watched.

    source
    • Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

maybe they should actually fund the original shows properly and give them a sane amount of advertising, rather than handing them an anchor and pushing them into the harbour waters?

      • But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

Disney movies are a great example, everyone complaining about animated sequels, but over the last 3 years or so, every original film put out by Disney has flopped. And we’re talking about movies that only need to entertain children and are all advertised more or less equally. So kids and parents will go just based on the fact that it’s a new kids movie.

The sequels are doing great at the box office and Disney plus. But the original properties are mostly ignored. I think it has a lot to do with people having more choice and less time to sort out what new things they like, watching something new is a commitment, whereas watching a sequel with characters you already know may be a safer choice

After hearing about the reboot like 6 months ago I got to thinking about how I never really watched the original back when I was a teen. I’m about to start season 6 now and it’s been a very binge watchable show so far. Still holds up nicely.

Maybe in another 25 years I’ll get around to watching the reboot.

Why risk making something new that might end up failing when you can just recycle old and successful stuff over and over again?

MCU/disney did more harm to marvel if than they left it alone as standalone, but the rabid fanbase wanted more.
