I don’t care all that much. Sometimes a thumbs up is the way to acknowledge you heard them.
my single most hated emoji

Sometimes people see things the way they want to see them. Not your fault. 👍😎
ClarkDoom@lemmy.world 1 year ago
The people that use it this way ruin it for everyone else.

If you were on the Internet before emojis took off, the single letter “k” had the same energy.

Wait it did? I used it all the time, because it was shorter than “ok”.

HerbalGamer@lemmy.world 1 year ago
they’re flipping themselves off though
CodingSquirrel@kbin.social 1 year ago
How are they flipping themselves off if your fingers point towards yourself when doing a thumbs up?
Condalmo@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Because their mom is standing behind the hand and so it’s flipping her off and if you flip off someone’s mom you’re flipping them off and it’s time for a donnybrook

This is fucking dumb.

I use it as an acknowledgement at work, and to be a sarcastic asshole with my friends. Context is key.

I can’t explain it, but it’s the boomerest emoji.

One of the few times I can actually sense sarcasm via ‘text’
emokidforever@lemmy.world 1 year ago
When I use it, I mean ok, because that’s what it actually means. It’s simply a way to acknowledge someone was heard. I will not be changing bc others read more into it. Tis way too exhausting to consider every hidden meaning someone might have.
BROMETHIUS@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Boss said I can’t work from home anymore. I simply replied 👍
TheOneAndOnly@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Right? I’ve been using it to mean, “acknowledged”, for years now. My kids told me just the other day that their group does not, and that they have to remind themselves I’m not being sarcastic when I send it. I have reached “that” age, it would appear.
marmo7ade@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Me too. Glad to be here. Why the fuck does anyone care that children apply nonsensical meaning to emojis? People actually waste time thinking about this? If a teenager told me there was something wrong with using the thumbs up emoji I would laugh at them, give a sarcastic OK, and move along.
variants@possumpat.io 1 year ago
what other meaning could it have?

The only way I see it as being negative is to look at it like the “yeah, okay” Jennifer Lawrence meme. Image
