  Hey! Sorry for the joke, I didn’t expect it to be seen by a real user!

  As we are one of the very few instances that has a no email policy there is very few ways in which we can determine if a person signing up is a bot or a regular user.

  Recently a very very specific person or group of people have been abusing Reddthat to create accounts, then ask interesting questions (let’s just say that), and then proceed to delete their account (which deletes all of their posts and comments). This makes it impossible to figure out what they have done unless someone quotes the reply or reports it before they delete it.

  I’m sorry you got caught up in the little bit of fun us admins have with writing little anecdotes or fun catch phases!

      Yup. When it’s required in order to access something then it’s no longer a donation, it’s a fee.

      I wasn’t aware of that instance and I can’t really advise. To me that’s a bit of a red flag (specifically the fact that it wasn’t mentioned upfront) but not necessarily a reason to count them out if you really think they stand out.

      Hm, agree in principle, but it should also really be noted that a donation that is required to get an account (or arguably even smaller perks) does not count as a donation anymore. At that point, it’s a weasel-wordiy way to say “payment”. Which should, IMHO, not be supported.

    Just like RHEL. Linux is free, but RedHat has a paid-for support model. Don’t like it, use another distro, it’ll still work together though.

  Thanks for reporting. I think it’s important to realise that the fediverse and FOSS software in general can attract commercial interest just like everything else. All sorts of bad players really.

  The software is free. The server to host on is not. All Fediverse instances cost money to run. Every user costs money. Requiring one time “donations” is kind of misleading. More than that, its in sustainable. I signed up at Communick, because they’re upfront about the annual subscription. That’s the only way the Fediverse can work without adds or sponsorships.

  I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but hosting internet services is not free at all. I could fully understand why you’d basically force people to pay at least something instead of hoping that people choose to donate.

  Lemmy is supposed to be a FOSS platform.

  FOSS is free and open source SOFTWARE, i.e. the software is the free part. You’re free to host your own Lemmy instance if you’re displeased.

    There’s also some verrrry sketchy instances you can join that have to do with stuff that’s illegal in many places (not the fun kind of illegal) and some of those take crypto donations for signup.
