Ocean acidification tipping point, climate change tipping point, rose of wars and fascism, microplastocs - these are just facts of things that are happening. I feel like doom scrolling would be an exaggeration of things that are happening or will happen, not just reading about reality.
Is it draining your will to live? Then it’s doom scrolling.
It’s doom scrolling especially if it’s true.

Doomscrolling is scrolling through your phone wallowing in depression/anxiety about these things. Moderate your news intake, spend some time doing mutual aid, ice watch, whatever appeals to you, and get more sleep.
Does the scrolling make you feel like we’re doomed? If so, it’s doomscrolling.
Think of it as being a different way of saying “anxiety scrolling”, because “doom scrolling” is primarily referring to the experience of being driven by anxiety to compulsively consume a never-ending stream of bad news.
For example, I had to cut myself off from following what is going on in Los Angeles earlier today because I recognized the signs of going past the point of merely keeping tabs on it to stay informed and compulsively anxiously reloading the page to see if there were any new updates.
I take the expression more as a warning to control it so it does not impact my mental health too much. Getting (properly) informed is good, but if I get so depressed that I can’t act positively on the system anymore or I make it worse for me and others, then it becomes counter-productive.
I’d say for it to be considered doom scrolling, it would have to be true things.
Exactly, otherwise it’s just, well, scrolling.
Is it better to ignore the fall of man or watch it in real time?
You have only your own capacity to do good, and you should hope to maximize it. Will more information about additional malignanciee help or impede your ability to do good?
Doom and fiction aren’t mutually inclusive.

I’ve always understood doom scrolling as the endless/mindless scrolling to the point of detriment, not the actual content itself.
