The blindfold on lady justice has a rich-people filter.
I wish we as a society would stop pretending that justice is blind, when it very clearly is not.

That’s why she has a scale on one hand, so she can tell which side put more money

Justice is blind. What you’re seeing isn’t actually justice.

Justice is blind.
Ideality is not reality though, it is a somewhat useful abstraction, about like any of the sciences; where there is always a scope of application and limitation in the entropy of reality.
The terminology of a Justice system is the primary fallacy. It is a legal system and legislative governance. These are not equivalent. Even the concept of justice is extremely subjective to many factors and perspectives.
I was disabled by a stupid person’s actions and incompetence. I learned the limits of the US system first hand. Even at a fundamental level, if you lack liquid funds on hand in the six figure range, you have no chance of restitution or compensation of any kind. In the vast majority of cases, even when you hear about six figure settlements, the person on the end of that gets nothing. Expert witness testimony is basically a system of academically well credentialed washed up people that act as opinion mercenaries. For personal injury, you’re basically fighting for who can hire the most and best opinion mercenaries. Insurance companies get a bulk discount, while you’re paying $6,000-$10,000 per opinion in the end. When you hear about someone’s six figure settlement, the government taxes half of that away because it is lump sum. Then the attorney takes 10%-30% of the total. Then the experts fight over the scraps and you’re left owing them many thousands of dollars in most cases. If you’re unable to fund the whole shebang, the attorney is going to string it out until they are owed a fortune, then they will claim they can no longer fund it, settle, and you’ll be screwed while they walk away with a fortune and many hundreds of dollars per hour for the actual work they put in. It is a total scam to even try to involve a lawyer. If you need one, you also must have the disposable income to fund the case and then you can treat them as the worthless spaghetti language scum that they really are.

Also, it’s a very vague and loaded comment. This really feels like it shouldn’t be here.

If justice isn’t blind, why do we all know what it should be? Because our legal system is the manifestation of justice in our authority structure, and it isn’t doing a good job of living up to the objective principles of justice.
The problem isn’t the ideas of justice, the problem is the judicial branch of government.

It never has been, and if it ever were we wouldn’t have needed all those statues of the chick with the scales and the blindfold as propaganda.

Does anyone think it's reality? It's an unreachable ideal to be continuously worked towards.
lolcatnip@reddthat.com 1 month ago
Or against, depending on your cultural values.

It’s an unreachable ideal to be continuously worked towards.
No it isn’t. It’s a pretense that the class who controls the violent apparatus of the state is impartial. It’s propaganda and nothing else.
blaue_Fledermaus@mstdn.io 1 month ago
@masquenox
It's an ideal in that people should be working towards taking control of the state apparatus and making it so. The class struggle will always make it impossible to reach, but it can always be pushed to be better.

The lady justice monologue from V for Vendetta by Alan Moore seems appropriate:
’ Hello, dear lady. A lovely evening, is it not?
Forgive me for intruding. Perhaps you were intending to take a stroll. Perhaps you were merely enjoying the view.
No matter. I thought that it was time we had a little chat, you and I.
Ahh…I was forgetting that we are not properly introduced.
I do not have a name. You can call me V.
Madam Justice…this is V.
V…this is Madam Justice.
Hello, Madam Justice.
“Good evening, V.”
There. Now we know each other. Actually, I’ve been a fan of yours for quite some time. Oh, I know what you’re thinking…
“The poor boy has a crush on me…an adolescent infatuation.”
I beg your pardon, Madam. It isn’t like that at all.
I’ve long admired you…albeit only from a distance. I used to stare at you from the streets below when I was a child.
I’d say, to my father, “Who is that lady?” and he’d say, “That’s Madam Justice.” And I’d say, “Isn’t she pretty.”
Please don’t think it was merely physical. I know you’re not that sort of girl. No, I loved you as a person. As an ideal.
That was a long time ago. I’m afraid there’s someone else now…
“What? V! For shame! You have betrayed me for some harlot, some vain and pouting hussy with painted lips and a knowing smile!”
I, Madam? I beg to differ! It was your infidelity that drove me to her arms!
Ah-ha! That surprised you, didn’t it? You thought I didn’t know about your little fling. But I do. I know everything!
Frankly, I wasn’t surprised when I found out. You always did have an eye for a man in uniform.
“Uniform? Why, I’m sure I don’t know what you’re talking about. It was always you, V. You were the only one…”
Liar! Slut! Whore! Deny that you let him have his way with you, him with his armbands and jackboots!
Well? Cat got your tongue?
Very well. So you stand revealed at last. You are no longer my Justice. You are his Justice now. You have bedded another.
Well, two can play at that game!
“Sob! Choke! Wh-who is she, V? What is her name?”
Her name is Anarchy. And she has taught me more as a mistress than you ever did!
She has taught me that justice is meaningless without freedom. She is honest. She makes no promises and breaks none. Unlike you, Jezebel.
I used to wonder why you could never look me in the eye. Now I know.
So goodbye, dear lady. I would be saddened by our parting even now, save that you are no longer the woman that I once loved.
Here is a final gift. I leave it at your feet.
The flames of freedom. How lovely. How just. Ahh, my precious Anarchy…
“O beauty, ’til now I never knew thee.” ’

It was never an ideal. It was little more than a marketing gimmick.
