Still with #SpookyReads2026, I am listening to 'King Sorrow' by Joe Hill.

Hill has definitely settled in to carrying the torch lit by his father (this book has had direct references to both 'The Dead Zone' and 'The Gunslinger', and it surely will connect somehow to 'The Eyes of the Dragon').

I find Hill's prose to be rougher than King's, but it will be good enough if it means more stories like these.

And that means I got to start #SpookyReads2026 book 3 last night.

I started listening to 'King Sorrow' by Joe Hill.

I'm enjoying the start of this so far, especially starting at a prestigious small Maine liberal arts college, for obvious reasons. I'm wondering if the name of a particular historic figure in the fiction is a sly homage to Shirley Jackson, which wouldn't surprise me.

I also finished 'Pandora's Star' by Peter F. Hamilton yesterday morning.

Decent reread, not sure if I will continue the series on audio. I really disliked the narrator and his style, so that alone would put me off continuing. This is a good series if you're looking for epic-sized space opera that presents a society in close proximity to ours.

Finally, I'm still listening to 'Pandora's Star' by Peter F. Hamilton.

I'm about ready to be done with this (about 4 hours to go). I liked the book when I read it in print, but it's a little tiresome as an audiobook, and I don't particularly like the narrator.

I have Joe Hill's 'King Sorrow' queued up to follow and I'm looking forward to that.

Because I was a doofus yesterday, I ended up leaving 'Whalefall' on my desk at work. So last night, I preemptively started book 2 of #SpookyReads2026.

This is 'My Darling Dreadful Thing' by Johanna van Veen.

I'm too early in it to have much of an impression, but I'm liking what I've gotten so far.

I had really forgotten how long it took this book to get to the actual plot of the series. I've been listening for about 10 hours and it's still not there.

And the SF-palooza continues for #FridayReads because on audio I'm listening to 'Pandora's Star' by Peter F. Hamilton.

I wanted a long SF book to balance against all the fantasy I've been listening to on audio. This is another reread for me. I had forgotten how long it takes to actually introduce the main antagonist in this series. But I've always been a fan of Hamilton and the galaxies he creates, so it's fine just reading about all the little stuff.

Since I finished that, I get to start a reread of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' by Douglas Adams for another book discussion.

This is probably one of my most reread novels, I've forgotten how many times I've read it now (must be at least 10-11). Not only is it hilarious comedy and satire, but it is also damn good SF book on its own merits.

I am also listening to 'Lies Sleeping' by Ben Aaronovitch.

I'm going to be very sad when I run out of Rivers of London books. I was thinking the other day that this series would be really good for a TV adaptation. I'd definitely watch it, until it inevitably gets cancelled after 2-3 seasons.

I also wonder if I can replace the library's collection of MMPBs of this series, for newer trades if they're available. They would look more appealing on the shelf.
