@ReadingTheDots @bookstodon That is good. I was unaware of that.

@bookstodon I'm reading Uninhabitable Earth now, and to say it's sobering, is to understate it. This was published seven years ago. He didn't know when exactly we might reach 1.5°C of warming (we are at almost 1.4°C) but once we do, we will for sure hit 2 and probably higher than that. With feedback loops, exponential acceleration, and cascading effects, certain tipping points are hard to avoid. What we are trying to stop isn't Climate Catastrophe. What we are trying to avoid is the 6th ELE.
As the author predicted, instead of working together in a cooperative effort, we are instead entrenching ourselves in tribalism and what he calls "the climate caste system." It gives adherents a false sense of protection.
We have met the enemy, and he is us.
That being said, I find the book to be excellent so far, and never too academic. All concepts are communicated clearly by this author.

@oleastra @bookstodon I understand that. As others often do, I often have to stop one to tend to another that needs to go back to the library, and like you, I may have already started another book besides.

@RanaldClouston @oleastra @bookstodon This is so cool. Borges writes so wonderfully.

@Edelruth @bookstodon yeah. I could feel that coming. Apparently her nuclear war scenarios were terrifying.

@reay @alicemcalicepants @bookstodon @robinince That is very familiar, that feeling that you don't want an author's back catalog to end.

@alicemcalicepants @bookstodon @robinince Normally Weird sounds like it would resonate with everyone here! 😃
It sounds like you make careful and deliberate choices, and I admire that so much..

@djtoebeans @bookstodon I think you will like ANXIETYLAND, especially if you yourself, or someone you know, has had the same experiences as the author.
I've not read Brandon Sanderson yet, but obvs. on my radar. Don't know Mercedes Lackey's work well, but def. heard of her. Does she write Hard Fantasy, in your view? I like to know what level of fantasy going in. I tend to gravitate to SFF, but I'm open to straight-up fantasy, too. Sounds like you have a strong line-up.

@sandsoftime5050 @bookstodon oh cool! I liked Thornhedge, and surprisingly enough, the story for kids: A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, which was sweet.

@VWDasher @bookstodon Thank you. I know that reading goals can really help motivate a lot of readers, if the books they want to read are available.
The hardest part about reading goals for me, this year, is having no idea when the books I have on hold will become available. Sure, I have plenty to read in the interim, but I'm gonna ditch those in favor of the ones I'm waiting on, every time.
And it's killing me that it's too early to get in the hold line for upcoming books by:

@lydiaschoch @bookstodon thank you for sharing books that really grabbed you, and that you wished you'd found sooner. That could be a good category in itself: books that I wish I had read sooner, like Fingersmith, or 11/22/63.

@sunumbral @bookstodon It's a doorstopper, for sure! Heavier than a graphic novel omnibus.
Have you and I ever read the same book at the same time? This is so fun! I only have ten days to finish it, so from here on out, it's my number one priority!

Yet, the early readers say that this 1232 page doorstopper is a brilliant 5 star read. Honestly, I might prioritize it over the books I'm currently reading that I only sort of like.
It's by Mark Z. Danielewski, who wrote that completely bonkers, mind-bending, genius, multiple simultaneous storyline novel: House of Leaves*. This new book: Tom's Crossing, is a Western, at least it's grounded there, but we know that this author has an incredible talent for expanding even his own set parameters in storytelling. There's no one quite like him.
I think even before I read this, I might recommend it over House of Leaves as a better way to introduce someone to the author's writing, because I think this will be more accessible.
*coming in at only 700 pages

@bookstodon I don't want to give anything away, but Land is not what you think it is. It is quite surprising, and I am delighted about being knocked slightly off-balance. Loving it so far, early on.
