Authors, I salute your patience with your readers.
I was reading a quick review of AS YOU WAKE, BREAK THE SHELL, by Becky Chambers, and the reader complained that it ended on a cliffhanger.
The book very clearly states that it is the first book in a series. To me, it would be like complaining that your coffee had milk in it, when it was clearly a latte that you ordered.

One of my personal peeves is reviews that read as if the reviewer ordered a latte and then complained that their coffee had milk in it.

It just slays me. Don't ding a book for being exactly what it claimed to be in length, format, genre, etc.
A lot of reviews lately are dinging books, because the story had a character who cheated on their spouse. Do they think that's unrealistic?
naturemc@mastodon.online@mastodon.online 1 hour ago @kimlockhartga It depends. Books which are part of a series can end with a cliffhanger or have a kind of ending of that part. Usually, it's just a question of personal taste.
But often publishers end printing of some parts only (happens more and more often) ... and then you are alone with the cliffhanger, if you can't buy the next book!
A lot of authors therefore end a story but leave something to make you curious for more.

It somewhat does, but, yeah, [1/2] and it makes sense as to where we're in the story.
So, "sure, but it's a fact, not a drawback" from me 🤷

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I am guilty of this, alas, because i saw “new Becky Chambers” and preordered w/o looking closely at the description. So i read it WITHOUT knowing it was the first in a series. So i didn’t know.
