Japanese Gothic, by Kylie Lee Baker is one of those novels that ends up being much more complex and wide-ranging than it first appears to be. This is a narrative with some real Murakami-style fuzzy edges, that will have you constantly guessing about the slippery differences between actual reality, and the mind's ability to filter both memory and perception.

I'm glad I read it straight through, because ultimately, this story is a very clever mix of symbolism, mythology, and cultural and political history, filtered through the unpredictable nature of unprocessed trauma. It's a unique structure, not one that is easy to pull off.
