I just have a small counter on my Polybar checking how many packages can be updated. Once it reaches a few hundred, I upgrade.

The tool
gduis very nice for finding space culprits.Never used Bazzite, but isn’t it heavy on packaged apps with snap or flatpak? Inherently space inefficient (and I despise them both passionately).
Don’t update all the time. I update every couple of days like a maniac, but once every few weeks is fine too.
There’s a distro for every level of “I want to do it myself” vs “I want everything to be made ready for me”.

There is archinstall which does everything for you. If you don’t wanna do anything yourself though, just check out CachyOS or EndeavourOS

Limiting factor will probably be network - if you hook it up with cable, it should be fine

I just use my (static) IP directly with port forwards on my router.
Sure, I get hundreds of login attempts every day, but that’s just life on the internet. Just secure your stuff and you’re fine.

Yes, like with everything else you self host.
You could also use some paid service like Cloudflare if you want to hide it for some reason.
But generally people are overly protective of their home IP. What’s the danger? DDoS?
People know my physical address but my house hasn’t been burned down yet…

Even on a crusty old laptop you can easily serve hundreds of users with Mumble
- Comment on RIP Discord: Self-Hosted Discord Alternatives Tested (TeamSpeak, Stoat, Fluxer, Matrix, & More) 2 days ago:
Mumble was the primary choice for EVE Online groups.
You can literally have thousands of users on the same server.
In EVE, during big fleet fights (like 1000+ people on the same “team”), you can have a hierarchy of fleet commanders/wing commanders/squad leaders where voice travels down the chain of command, but not up.
Also the certificate based security with ACLs is just unmatched. You can set it up exactly how you want.
Also easy to integrate with, which is important for something like EVE.

It took me many years to realize.
I learned to read and write very young, and so the literary part of school was always super easy. This caused me to neglect studying overall, and when I moved to high school in the city, I was just average lol

Sure, but it would be illegal for a human to coerce/encourage a mentally ill person to commit crime (or worse).
So who’s responsible? Caretaker? Government?
- Comment on Elder Scrolls 6 Is Powered By New Version Of Creation Engine 3 weeks ago:
Yes, and the Quake 2 engine is one of the greatest software creations of its generation.
The Gamebryo/Creation engine is hot garbage in comparison.

Skyrim ruins better on Linux in my experience, so probably yes
- Comment on Chatbots Make Terrible Doctors, New Study Finds 5 weeks ago:
Just sharing my personal experience with this:
I used Gemini multiple times and it worked great. I have some weird symptoms that I described to Gemini, and it came up with a few possibilities, most likely being “Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome”.
My doctor had never heard of it, and only through showing them the articles Gemini linked as sources, would my doctor even consider allowing a CT scan.
Turns out Gemini was right.
- Comment on Question: Is there a Self Hosted Discord like app? 5 weeks ago:
Ventrilo was awful, having huge delay. Also no persistent chat.
TeamSpeak is proprietary and required a license for more than 8 users iirc. Chat might have been persistent?
Mumble was/is king in terms of voice chat. Open source, fully featured, strong certificate based security, best latency. It’s used as backend in many big games, too. No persistent chat, though.
We used IRC for chat and Mumble for voice like 10 years ago when I played Eve Online. Works great!

- Comment on Decreasing Certificate Lifetimes to 45 Days 3 months ago:
Like what?
SSL is so simple and automatic with certbot.
Then there’s CORS if you really need to load resources from other sites, but you won’t need that for small sites.
Making the backend is easier than ever. It’s much harder to make security mistakes nowadays.
And if you don’t know what you’re doing, just ask an LLM if you made any fuckups…

Corporate servers will usually have some degree of SIEM implemented, and at least audit log monitoring.

This. People are overly paranoid nowadays.
I have had SSH open directly to my main PC for 15 years and never had any issues except spam logins.
Same with :443 to my nginx.
