I’m okay with a few crawlers, but not what’s effectively a DDoS attack by AI companies who abuse my resources generating terabytes of traffic and crashing my server while costing me money. I use Anubis now, which sucks from a accessibility standpoint but I’m not dealing with their malicious traffic anymore.

Yes if it’s tunneled to your self-hosting setup. With CGNAT you have to use similar services if you want to self-host.

Stoat and Matrix do fine with that model.
Having checked a year ago and checking again now, their UX has barely improved and the GUI is still significantly worse than Discord. They need a monetization strategy and leadership that isn’t a shitshow so that they can make something that people will actually want to use.

For coding $280/mo is peanuts compared to how much the Claude API costs

GO self-hosted, go local
Last I checked it costed ~$6000 to run a high end LLM at terrible speeds and that was before the RAM price hike. And at the rate things are changing it might be obsolete in a few year. And I don’t have that much money either.
I’m going to stick with the free OpenCode Zen models for now and maybe switch to OpenCode Black or Synthetic or whatever when they stop being available and use the open weight models there.

Matrix is sort of a mishmash of things, not a fan of the UX but it has federation and encryption and isn’t Discord

That doesn’t look like clarification to me. It explicitly mentions sexual content then gives a vague “age-restricted themes” and “18+ content” that they can apply arbitrarily like YouTube did with “Hind’s Hall”

…discord.com/…/1500005389362-What-are-Age-Restric…
This here says that Discord can automatically age-restrict channels and specifically mentions channels focused on sexual content in a different section, implying that this is not the only “mature” topic they will age restrict.

Youtube age restricts pro-Palestine stuff and the government age restricts the Epstein files, so I can imagine this could target political or LGBTQ spaces

FB/Instagram is a for-profit ad-driven platform that relies on fearmongering to keep you addicted to the platform. Keeping yourself addicted to a platform like that and destroying your mental health with it doesn’t help anyone.

I use Ironfox also mainly for the plugins. I have the personal stuff on my phone over Tor since I don’t want to pay for a VPN, and I’ve noticed that Ironfox is a lot slower than Vanadium/Cromite for that setup.

Lemmy is a lot less addictive for me than personalized algorithm-driven TikTok/Reels/Shorts type stuff and has better quality content, but there’s also a lot less content. I blocked Instagram and other apps on my phone and now I ended up on YT shorts on my computer also

I host my main server on my own hardware, and a VPN on Hetzner because my shitty ISP doesn’t let me port forward. For the past year, bots were hitting my Forgejo instance hard. I forgot to disable registration and they generated hundreds of accounts with hundreds of repos with sketchy links, generating terrabytes of traffic from my VPS, costing me money in traffic. I disabled registration and deleted the spam, and bots still kept hitting my server for several months, which would cause memory leaks over time and crash it, and still costed me money with terrabytes of traffic per month. A few weeks ago, I put Anubis on the VPS. Now, zero bots hit my Forgejo instance and I don’t pay for their traffic anymore. Problem solved.
