- Comment on Bitwarden has launched a new authenticator app 6 months ago:
It’s also free in the Bitwarden app if you self-host with Vaultwarden. It’s only a paid feature if you’re using their hosting, and seemingly only so they can dangle it as a “premium” benefit.
- Comment on Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads 7 months ago:
A mini PC with a USB IR receiver and whatever old remote you have to spare. It takes a bit of setup to map the remote with something like LIRC, but it works great once that’s done.
- Comment on More 128TB SSDs are coming as almost no one noticed this launch — another SSD controller that can support up to 128TB appeared paving the way for HDD-beating capacities 8 months ago:
I’ve seen SSDs hit 100TB, but those are $40k+. And more “reasonable” options like 64TB for $10k or so.
HDDs just reached 30TB, but I don’t think those are widely available yet. 24TB is the biggest you can expect to see for sale.
- Comment on Amazon Prime Video drops Dolby Vision and Atmos unless you pay extra 8 months ago:
Usenet is a lot faster than torrents, you don’t need a VPN, and it’s more reliable than anything but great private trackers.
- Comment on Best TV box for connecting to streaming services? 8 months ago:
You can get a USB IR receiver and use software like LIRC to map the inputs of basically any remote you have. Setting it up takes a little effort, but it works great when it’s done.
- Comment on If you were to suddenly come into possession of 12+ enterprise-grade SAS hard drives, how would you go about incorporating them into your homelab? 9 months ago:
I would sell a few of them to shore up the budget, then use those funds to build a NAS box. You can buy everything other than drives for a few hundred, less if you have spare parts sitting around.
- Comment on Own a Roku TV or streaming device? You're about to see a lot more ads on your home screen 9 months ago:
Until then, a Raspberry Pi or SFF PC will do the job just fine. They even work with remotes if you get an IR receiver for them.
- Comment on Call an expert 10 months ago:
You think you saw it there, but once you move the thing you learn it’s actually a thumbtack. The screw fell into a vent instead, and will occasionally rattle around to taunt you.
- Comment on Not the couch! 10 months ago:
Or ADHD. That shit will catch my attention every 17 seconds, the impulse is gonna win eventually.
- Comment on File size preference for Radarr? 10 months ago:
You got a remux, which is uncompressed. You can turn those off in Radarr to avoid those surprises.
If you want to fine-tune your file sizes (and quality) further, you can set up custom formats and quality profiles. The Trash Guides explain it well, the “HD Blu-ray + Web” profile on that page is a solid starting point. It’ll usually grab 6-12GB movies, but you can tweak it if you want them smaller.
- Comment on Windows 10 end of life could prompt torrent of e-waste as 240 million devices set for scrapheap 10 months ago:
These Win10 EoLs are going to flood eBay at dirt cheap prices, and they make great server/project boxes. They’re going to be new toys for the hobbyist crowd, not primary machines.
- Comment on Single-use e-cigarettes contain batteries that last hundreds of cycles despite being discarded 10 months ago:
In general yes, but that doesn’t apply here. Vapes all use rechargeable lithium batteries, even the disposables without a charging port. Other battery chemistries at that size don’t put out enough power.
- Comment on Looking for low power devices for selfhosting 10 months ago:
They’re also surprisingly easy to upgrade for their size. Swapped RAM, CPU, and hard drive in about 15 minutes total on one of mine.
- Comment on Substack says it will not remove or demonetize Nazi content 10 months ago:
“We would make less money, and that’s worse than more money.”
- Comment on [deleted] 11 months ago:
I’ve been happy with DuckDNS. Free, simple, and reliable.
- Comment on Questions around disk space and parity in unraid 11 months ago:
If it was me, I’d just go without parity temporarily and grab another drive for that when I could. A new system should be safe enough for a while, just not forever.
- Comment on Chrome’s next weapon in the War on Ad Blockers: Slower extension updates 11 months ago:
It’s just Chromium with a layer of Microsoft on top. It’ll have the same extension issues from Manifest v3 that mainline Chrome does.
- Comment on PlayStation To Delete A Ton Of TV Shows Users Already Paid For 11 months ago:
On the bright side, 20TB of hard drives is relatively cheap these days if you buy used. They’ll pay for themselves in a year if you kill the streaming services.
Happy sailing
- Comment on Do you configure your servarr docker containers from one docker-compose file, or individual ones? 11 months ago:
You can interact with a single container if you need to, not just the whole compose group.
docker compose restart jellyfin
for your example, and “restart” can be swapped for stop or start as needed.Splitting compose files can be a good idea, but it isn’t always necessary.
- Comment on Plex update raises concerns over potential sharing of porn viewing habits | Be careful what you watch 11 months ago:
Exactly. IMDB assigns an identifier to each piece of content, and Plex (or Jellyfin/Emby/etc) use that to pull metadata.
- Comment on Build a Thinkstation or try to fiddle with VMs? 11 months ago:
You could do it on the NAS. Qbittorrent is probably the highest-recommended client right now, and it has a web UI that can be accessed from any other device on your network.
That said, I run one of the tiny Thinkcentres as a dedicated torrent and *arrs box. I think I paid $30 for that one, and it has more than enough power for the task.
- Comment on Tv box recommendations? 11 months ago:
Given the recent issues with ads, I wouldn’t recommend anything Android/GoogleTV based. A USFF PC will give you better performance for less money, especially if you buy used. You can find 1L X86 boxes for $30-60 on eBay that are perfect for the job.
- Comment on Gamers enraged at Ubisoft for injecting ads into the middle of video games 11 months ago:
It goes farther than ad-tolerant, a lot of them enjoy the ads. They see them as a natural part of the content.
- Comment on Peanut butter and hummus are the same thing. 11 months ago:
If you want to compare something to peanut butter, check out tahini. It’s basically peanut butter made out of sesame seeds, and even has a (kinda) similar flavor profile. Tahini and grape jam is delicious.
- Comment on Microplastic overdose 11 months ago:
For the record, good American cheese does exist. It’s just a blend of cheddar and Colby with some annatto for seasoning, instead of the extruded “cheese product” stuff in plastic wrappers.
- Comment on Need help: accessing all my containers by name 11 months ago:
Yes, that’s how it’s supposedto work if they’re all on the same Docker network (same yaml). In practice, it can be flaky and you’re much better off using ip:port.
- Comment on Tesla will sue you for $50,000 if you try to resell your Cybertruck in the first year 11 months ago:
They absolutely design cars with some pedestrian safety in mind. That’s why hood ornaments went away and bumpers moved away from solid steel.
I don’t remember the exact numbers, but they have a metric along the lines of “X% of pedestrians survive impacts up to Y speed” that they need to meet.
- Comment on 8GB RAM in M3 MacBook Pro Proves the Bottleneck in Real-World Tests 1 year ago:
And in the case of these Macs, the SSD is also soldered. So you’re screwed when you wear it out with the excessive swapping.
- Comment on After decades of dreams, a commercial spaceplane is almost ready to fly 1 year ago:
We’ll have to wait for the next model, this one is strictly unmanned cargo transport.
- Comment on Home heating from datacentres - good use of waste energy or a waste of money? | TechRadar 1 year ago:
The only way it makes sense is within the same facility. You could use water or refrigerant in heat exchangers, and run insulated lines to other parts of the building. Wouldn’t do too much, but might see a slight reduction in heating costs.
