It may not seem like much to you, but to her it’s making a world of difference. I’m reminded of a quote I got from an otherwise kind of silly movie:
“Mother is the name for God on the lips and hearts of all children.”
It’s a slightly changed version of a quote from William Thackeray, apparently. Whatever the case, I think it applies here. The gods and goddesses of this child’s life let her down, and you may not think much of yourself or what you do, but you’ve chosen to be a good goddess, and that’s a wonderful thing. You’ve blessed not only the child you’ve taken in, but your own, as well, by showing her how to treat others the right way.

So it’s too expensive to provide school lunch, but not too expensive to completely take over the care of the children entirely. More and more, I understand what people mean when they say the cruelty is the point. This makes zero goddamned sense.

Why have I never heard of this artist/group? This is like DJ Shadow and Del the Funky Homosapien did a collaboration, and I mean that in the best possible way.
- Comment on Do you think a story that mixes magic with super advanced technology can work? 3 weeks ago:
“I do think there are some things we don’t understand. If we’d be back in time a thousand years, trying to explain this place to people, they could only accept it in terms of magic.”
“Then perhaps it is magic. The magic of the human heart, focused and made manifest by technology. Every day you here create greater miracles than a burning bush.”
And then…
“We are dreamers, shapers, singers, and makers. We study the mysteries of laser and circuit, crystal and scanner, holographic demons and invocations of equations. These are the tools we employ and we know many things.”
I love B5 so much.

Am I not the only one? Most people I’ve heard of eat their nails. I’m the only one I’ve ever known who chews on his cuticles.

Well, I guess you’d check under his skirt or whatever you call it.

Cool. Thanks for the direction. I’m curious about electrical stuff, and I’d like to be able to do some things around my house. There’s some DIY stuff online, too, involving building projects from old parts of appliances that interest me, but I realized quickly that I’d need some very good knowledge about electrical work to stay safe. It’s unlikely I’ll actually pursue the latter, but I’d like to at least know the how and why of my home wiring.

What’s a good resource for learning about electrical engineering for people starting from nearly zero knowledge? I’d love to learn more so I don’t burn my house down if I want to, say, replace a light fixture in my house.

I wondered if they made the jump over here. Guess not, sadly. Reading that sub has made me a better man, because it offers some pretty harsh critiques of male behavior.

Sorry to be the “um, actually” guy, but life on any planet other than Earth has not been confirmed. There have been some signs that there MAY be life elsewhere, but nothing conclusive.
As a layperson, there seems to be a general consensus that, given the vast nature of the universe, life on other planets may be likely. We just can’t say “for a fact that other planets exist with life”.
I’ll be happy to be proven wrong if you’ve got a source.
- Comment on Why do people insist on not answering ALL the questions in an email or text message? 2 months ago:
People hate to read. I write emails that try to cover all bases, because I can’t assume grown adults with advanced degrees know what’s going on. Sadly, they’ll not only not read it, but ask me to write less. Cutting the word count only leads to more confusion.
I’m so done with humanity sometimes.

God Almighty, these people are mentally ill. Having sex with women is to gay. We’re going to wrap around to a misogynistic homosexual society, apparently.
What the actual fuck?

I use Boost for Lemmy. The transition from Reddit was easy for me, and I know little about the fediverse other than the most basic outlines.

Some people choose to have guns. They’re not cheap, and not everyone over here is willing to kill someone else.

If we start burning cars, we likely start getting shot. Remember this is the USA we’re talking about here. Maybe it needs to come to that, but don’t judge people for trying to avoid the kind of crackdown Trump would likely enact given any excuse.
